Polestar 1 [Official] Polestar 1

The Polestar 1 is a 2-door plug-in hybrid sports car marketed by Polestar, a brand of Volvo Cars. It was the first car produced by the company since becoming an independent car manufacturer in June 2017. Based on Volvo's Concept Coupé from 2013, the Polestar 1 is built on the Volvo Scalable Product Architecture platform and is powered by a hybrid powertrain, using a front-mounted engine and two electric motors at the rear. A limited production run of 1,500 cars took place over three years, from 2019 to 2022. Production took place in Chengdu, China, where the company's first production facility was built.
I went today to Polestar showroom in Stockholm and I saw two Polestar 1. One in the showroom and one parked outside. I have to say it looks fantastic in person.

Perfect spec. I would love to see this with a gray leather interior (I usually don't care for gray leather) and those book-end walnut trim seen in the 90 series Volvos. There's just not a wasted line. Those confident rear haunches and how the rear side profile line cuts back at the tail-lights. This is the zenith in Ingelhath's design for modern Volvos.

Can you imagine this as a C60 Coupe, with an I6? Would have been an even more stunning, and attainable car. It's a waste of a truly beautiful car design IMO.

M

I think I'd be content with what is the current powertrain arrangement.

But then I think what this body and interior would be like if it was overlayed on Mercedes' MRA platform with their inline-6 and ISG, a smooth, sophisticated powertrain that's not shouty, and RWD or rear-biased AWD system. Or if it was on something like the Lucid electric car chassis.

Regarding the infotainment system, I am fine with the dominant portrait touchscreen though I am more critical of it in, say, the new S-class.

I haven't been so appalled by a new car in a long time. First of all, the price: 140k GBP? They must be taking the piss. Fancy CF body panels, but they need to come with a cringy plastic sticker on the outside to remind you because at 2350kg you would have never guessed. Like, how? How can the car be heavier than the Taycan/Model S when it doesn't carry half the batteries and is made out of CF? I4 engine in a car that costs 140k, no comment. Trunk space is absolutely pitiful - 138l in a big GT car like this? Electric cars come with 2 boots, this has half a boot and you need to look at some electrical sockets like the ones you would normally lock up in a dusty electrical cupboard in your garage - how high end. Similarly, acceleration is way behind any petrol or electric car that is even approaching this price range. Going for hybrid looks to me like a massive mistake. Why not just go full electric, have a much faster car, with more space inside, bigger boot and even fewer emissions? Damn, what a terrible, terrible design. What kind of a clown sends the majority of the power to the front wheels in a 600hp car? No wonder it has loads of weird traction issues when accelerating. And to top it all off, the it has the Volvo approach to driver involvement - ie. they can't wait until all cars are autonomous and the driver is completely robbed of any control. So you can't turn any of the nannies off and their cars are limited to 112mph from factory (although the Polestar isn't apparently).

Along with the 992 Carreras, the Polestar 1 is the absolute embodiment of modern automotive beauty IMHO. The sight of these cars will send pulses racing for many decades to come.

I think Mat is very harsh. Look at the review on the Nürburgring. I trust that a lot more than someone who drives cars mostly on a straight for a 1/4 mile and does silly brake tests.

Freak car sadly.

But just imagine this beauty with a new Model S powertrain. OMG!

This car is such a winner based solely on its' exterior and interior design. And I agree. Underpinning the Polestar 1 with a cutting-edge BEV platform, regardless whether it be from Tesla, Lucid, VAG (PPE), M-B, Rivian, Rimac, Benteler-Bosch, etc., would make for a genuinely sustainable, truly extraordinary automobile.

Time to call the emperor naked time.

Design - nice. Subjectively would have been much more appealing as as a wagon/shooting brake.

Rest - WTF? If BMW made a $160k, 600+ HP car that is slower than a hot hatch and weighed more than a full size SUV while having less space than a sub compact, we would be ridiculing it here to no end. Why does the Polestar get a pass? I have nothing against Polestar and love the 2. But the 1 is shit. You can literally walk into any dealership blindfolded and pick a car for what this costs and walk away with a better deal. /rant

BMW made the i8, which followed the same concept but made 100 times better. But unfortunately for them, Tesla stole the show.

One of the biggest flaws with both BMW i8 and Polestar 1 is the ridiculous mini boot... they are both supposed to be Grand Touring cars with 4 seats, you simply can’t offer a 150 l boot in such a car....

It doesn't get a pass by a long shot. All it is is extremely pretty. Hence my 'freak car' comment.

Naming every company under the sun except BMW? lol nice touch

An i8 is not supposed to be a GT. At all. 4 seats in an i8? Wot?

And even then....a ridiculously large boot like on a BMW 8er (a real GT) is stupid also. Yeah sure you can take 4 Golf bags, but the car looks like a modded 5er because of that. At least the Polestar 1 looks sleek as f#ck!

I'll wait for BMWs' dedicated BEV platform, thankyou.

I think the high price of the Polestar 1 is perhaps a reflection of it's low, limited production volume. And as far as the powertrain goes, this concept goes back to 2013 doesn't it? Perhaps if they'd have launched it at the time, rather than waiting 5 years, it wouldn't seem so out of its depth.

Subjectively would have been much more appealing as as a wagon/shooting brake.

I'd forgotten about this the follow up concept...

Please look up the meaning of Grand Touring car before you come back to this forum....
