Love the write-up.Happy 5 Years to the most enthralling thing I've ever owned, my Mclaren 765LT.
I received the car from Mclaren in May of 2021. A rare Alaska Diamond Metallic beast. I traded, with hesitation, a beautiful Rossa Scuderia Ferrari 458 Speciale. Once I got in the Mclaren, all of that regret was erased. It has been, without question, the most enthralling machine I've ever owned. To commemorate my 5 years with the car I think I'll lay out my thoughts here per category.
Looks: To me, the car looks incredible. Independence Day was my favorite movie as a kid, and it looks like an alien fighter ship. I think with time it's only gotten better. Certain angles could go in a modern art gallery. The contrasting diamond metallic white with its blue and purple flec and the black carbon couldn't have come out better. 9/10.
Interior: There are actually a surprising amount of gadgets for a 2021 car and functionality to the center infotainment screen. Some of the newer cars (like the Ferrari 296) make me appreciate the performance oriented data and center touch screen more than I did in 2021. It's kind of perfect in that it came right before the era of haptics and digital overload but is still very modern. The fold down speedo is never not cool, and a reason I'd never get a 750S over this. But the best, and I mean BEST part of the interior, is the seating position with the P1 bucket seats. They're comfortable, have perfect rake, and hold my hips tight enough that I feel so connected to the car. 8.5/10.
Suspension: I use the car in comfort mode almost exclusively. In anything else, it's pretty harsh. But isn't it supposed to be? 7/10.
Sound: It's immensely immersive. There are so many sounds. Rattles, hisses, the thunderous and somewhat crude exhaust sound. These aren't beautiful. But they're good. But what takes the sound up a multiple rating points is the fantastic exhaust cracks. They're organic, unlike the synthetic and programed pop pop pop in a Lambo. They change. Sometimes a series of low burbles like distance thunder, and sometimes and loud THRACK at a 4th to 3rd downshift. When that happens, smiles are involuntary. 9/10.
Gearbox: Best of the best. I use sport mode most for the street. It has such a well programmed kick. Not as fast as track mode, where it's buttery smooth to prioritize speed, but so fun. The paddle action is perfect. It also kicks down very aggressively in response to throttle inputs to mask the engines lag. 10/10.
Steering: Hydraulic racks are beautiful thing. Real steering feel. Naturally weighted. Full trust. The car does not dart like a Ferrari. It responds slower and more naturally to inputs. When the speed is so hyper, that's appreciated. It's not the best steering Mclaren has done, that's a 675LT, but it's very good. 9/10.
Acceleration: 5 years in and this car scares me every time I redline it. The pace is immense! I've ran 9.7-9.8 second quarter miles at ~149 MPH on the street many times. dozens of ~4.7 second 60-130 pulls verified by GPS. It's brutal, scary, and so addictive. When you consider this car was built for aero and cornering and the speed is a byproduct of lightness and massive power, it makes it even more impressive. Proper tires are a must along with some heat in them. But my God, nothing excites like this thing. 10/10.
Brakes: Then when you need to slow down, you stomp on the pedal and there are the best brakes I've ever experienced in a car. Because the car is so light and the wing so big, you always can brake later than your brain tells you, and from BIG speed. Watching the wing flick up in the rearview is also great fun. 10/10/
Value: The car was $430k new. Probably worth $500k today. But there are barely any for sale and for good reason. I think this should be a $1MM car as it blows Pistas and other cars around that price point away. But honestly, I'm glad it isn't. I'm not saying $500k is an insignificant amount of money, because that would be silly. But the value is near enough what I paid for it that I can use the most fun and thrilling car in the world without any fear of racking up miles. It's the best value car on the planet, I think. 10/10
I have no plans on ever selling the car. It's so good. So raw. So fast. So fun. I cannot see the like being made again. It's the peak from the 2010's which is the greatest car ever we've known, before things went too digital and Europe decided speed, and sound, and fun were terrible things.
