F-Type [Official] Jaguar F-Type

The Jaguar F-Type (X152) is a series of two-door, two-seater sports cars manufactured by British car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover under their Jaguar Cars marque from 2013 to 2024. The car's JLR D6a platform is based on a shortened version of the XK's platform. It is the so-called "spiritual successor" to the E-Type.

How can you not be excited to see Jaguar getting back into the sports car business with a modern-day interpretation of the classic E-Type? Well, there is that one little issue with the F-Type powertrain that Jag announced during the Beijing Motor Show. In this day and age, a 380-horsepower V6 just doesn't cut it, supercharged or not. At least not when Mustangs are packing 662 horses.

Yes, we know the horsepower wars have lately gotten out of hand, but if Jaguar wants the F-Type to be taken seriously, it just plain needs a V8. And according to Car and Driver, it's going to be getting one. At least, eventually.

C/D says the F-Type will eventually get a version of Jag's 5.0-liter V8, although it doesn't know which one. Speculation says the supercharged variants in 470- and 550-horsepower states of tune are the most likely, as the base V8 only makes five more horsepower than the planned V6. The report also surmises that the initial roadsters will be six-cylinders when they debut in 2013, with the V8 models appearing further on in the production cycle.

At the Beijing auto show, Jaguar confirmed that its new F-type would receive a new 380-hp, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 derived from the brand’s 5.0-liter V-8. There’s good news for those who believe six cylinders are two too few; Jag has confirmed that the F-type also will receive a 5.0-liter V-8 “at some point.”It’s not known when the V-8 will make its way to the F-type, nor what kind of output it will produce. Jaguar makes its 5.0-liter V-8 in a variety of strengths, including a base tune of 385 hp; as the supercharged V-6 will make 380 hp, we imagine the 470-hp flavor found in the XF Supercharged (among others) would make a good candidate for adoption by the F-type, possibly in an R or even an RS variant. Above that, Jaguar offers a 550-hp tune for the supercharged eight in the XKR-S.

Our spies have caught the new Jaguar F-Type R for the first time, testing near the company’s HQ in Warwickshire.

When Jaguar first confirmed the F-Type for production at theNew York Motor Showback in April, it released official photos of a camouflaged prototype. The images you see here are subtly different, hinting at a new engine under the bonnet.

We already know that the standard F-Type roadster will get a new supercharged V6, tuned to either 335bhp or 375bhp. But this flagship F-Type ‘R’ will be fitted with Jaguar’s supercharged 5.0-litre V8 used in the XJ Supersports, XFR and XKR, although expect it to be detuned to around 450bhp.

The external changes are limited to a set of quad exhausts (a classic ‘R’ design cue) replacing the standard V6 F-Type’s centrally mounted twin pipes. The bumpers and side skirts look the same on this prototype, but expect these to become more prominent when the production model arrives in September.

The shape is shaping up excellently, and the turbine rims will be a feast for the eyes. I look forward to M3 comparisons.

Cayman S, 911, being the most expensive, M3 and F-Type R are in some way rivals: all are daily drivable performance cars, the M3 being the most practical. Right now there is alot cross shopping between an M3 and a Cayman S/R. With the F-Type that also is compact quite powerful and light (?) it will give a new choice. I am sure it will be a nice car in terms of looks and performance, just follow the new Jaguar line-up, but quality and reliability could make this car less successful.

The SLC AMG and P13 will get added to that list, both being placed against the Cayman and 911 at the same time.

Interesting, I am thinking about the new Cayman S, but wouldn't consider an M3 coupe. I might add the F-Type Jaguar to the list however.

I'm all for supercharging over turbocharging. That is why I like Audi's move with the supercharged 3.0 V6 TFSI.

Martin went over this millions of times, everything is in favor of turbos bar the minimal lag with modern engines, which is proven can be really really unoticable. Superchargers waste many HPs. And that whine isn't sexy at all.

BTW if I remember correctly, Audi ditched the supercharger quickly in favor of turbos.

IMO better than a vacuum cleaner sound of turbocharged engines.

Driven both and much prefer the supercharger route though I do conceed that it waste HP to achieve the same outputs though with the introductions of clutches the supercharger might regain popularity in the future.

Also I much prefer a slight whine over a dumping wastegate anyday. ;)

We have very different views, but on this one, I agree with you, prefer, still depending on vehicle, supercharging over turbocharging. 335i can't match S4 throttle response and sound, even with aftermarket exhaust. Some modded S4/S5 3.0 TSFI sound nearly better than stock M3.
