Peak torque of more than 400 lb-ft
Following a lengthy teasing session, Ford has fully revealed the Shelby GT350 Mustang.

The highlight of the new range-topping Mustang is a naturally aspirated V8 5.2-liter engine boasting a flat-plane crankshaft never seen before on a Ford V8 engine. Final specifications are not available but Ford says the engine will produce more than 500 bhp (373 kW) and a maximum torque above the 400 lb-ft (542 Nm) mark. Power will be channeled to the wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox while a Torsen limited slip differential is going to be standard equipment.

Ford will offer the Shelby GT350 Mustang with an optional Track Pack bringing extra goodies such as an engine oil cooler and a transmission oil cooler while the new aluminum hood is standard along with the bespoke 19-inch wheels wrapped around in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires customized specifically for this model to provide optimal track on the road and during track use.

Stopping power is provided by Brembo brakes with 394mm front rotors matched with six-piston calipers along with 380mm rear rotors working with four-piston calipers. The model can also be visually distinguished by a more aggressive and aerodynamic body including a significantly low front splitter, carbon fiber composite grille as well as a rear diffuser increasing downforce.

Stepping inside the cabin, the Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang has received Recaro sport seats, unique gauges and less chrome and shiny surfaces as a method to reduce sun glare. There’s also an integrated driver control system offering five modes to select which alter settings such as stability control, ABS, steering effort, traction control, throttle mapping, exhaust and MagnaRide tuning.

At an additional cost, Ford is offering an optional Tech Pack bringing electric seats covered in leather, dual-zone climate control system, Shaker Audio and an eight-inch MyTouch Ford infotainment system.

Additional details can be found in the attached press release.

If you thought you might have to wait some time before the storied Shelby name gets spliced back into the Mustang narrative, think again. An all-new Mustang Shelby GT350, based on the all-new sixth-generation Mustang, is already here—ahead of its official debut later this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. However, this time the car has been developed by Ford Motor Company's [NYSE:F] own SVT performance division and not Shelby American, which ceased production of its own GT350 last year.
There will be something new and special under the hood of this latest beast, and rest assured it’s a V-8. The 2016 Shelby GT350 has what the automaker is calling its most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever. Ford won’t say exactly where power and torque ratings land, but it confirms that the new top pony will make more than 500 horsepower and more than 400 pound-feet of torque.

Ford says that the new “unique, high-revving” 5.2-liter V-8 has a racing-derived arrangement that spaces crank pins at 180-degree intervals rather than 90-degree ones, which is typical in normal-production models—yes, we're talking a flat-plane crank here. That effectively reduces the overlap of exhaust-pressure pulses, improving breathing—albeit potentially with some sacrifice in smoothness.

That engine is said to make the most of the new Mustang’s finessed chassis dynamics, and it comes paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

MagneRide comes to Ford

As for those dynamics, this is Ford’s first application of the MagneRide magnetorheological suspension system—one that’s already used across a wide range of performance cars and well-respected. It can fine-tune damping at each wheel, in milliseconds, to filter out road harshness yet provide crisp responses when needed for abrupt maneuvers and in high-performance driving. The GT350 also includes a Ford-tuned Torsen limited-slip differential, which should especially help gain better traction and grip out of corners.

The GT350 also includes special 19-inch alloy wheels—10.5 inches wide in front, 11.0 inches wide in back—with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires and sidewall construction, tread face, and compound all specific to this model. Brakes have been upgraded with big Brembo six-piston fixed calipers and four-piston calipers in back.

Actually a different silhouette than other ‘Stangs

In order to offer up the most performance possible with all those technical upgrades, the GT350 has an aerodynamically optimized shape, ahead of the windshield, that’s unique and up to two inches lower than that of the regular Mustang models. Ford lowered and sloped the hood a bit more versus the base Mustang, while the front fascia is resculpted, with a more aggressive front splitter and a functional hood outlet that aids with cooling as well in reducing front-end lift at high speeds. And they further improved the stiffness of the Mustang’s front end with a new injection-molded carbon fiber composite grille opening and an (optional) front tower-to-tower brace.

Fender vents, an angled-forward grille, a high-pressure engine air intake, and front-brake cooling ducts are additional functional improvements that all factor into this model’s performance. With the Track Pack, the GT350 also includes an engine oil cooler and transmission cooler.

Inside, there’s a flat-bottom steering wheel, as well as an upgraded gauge cluster. And Ford claims to have spent hundreds of hours and many prototypes in developing the special Recaro sport seats, which have a unique cloth upholstery.

Multi-mode driver control system

The 2016 Shelby GT350 comes with a new driver control system with five modes that each offer their own calibration of the anti-lock braking system, stability control, steering effort, throttle mapping, MagneRide suspension tuning, and exhaust settings.

A Tech Pack will bring power leather-trimmed seats plus upgraded Shaker Audio, an eight-inch MyFord Touch screen, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Ford hasn’t yet confirmed when the GT350 goes on sale, and there are still plenty of important things yet to be released—like performance numbers. So stay tuned for that, as well as all the rest live from the Los Angeles Auto Show this week.

Shelby GT350 Mustang aims for Europe's performance cars

LOS ANGELES -- Ford is revealing the 2015 Shelby GT350 Mustang today in advance of the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The Shelby Mustang GT350 is a name revered by enthusiasts as the car that made the Mustang's performance reputation when it debuted in 1965. For 2015, Ford redesigned the GT350 on the new, sixth-generation Mustang platform to go up against European performance cars.
The GT350 will be powered by a new high-revving 5.2-liter V-8 engine with a flat-plane crankshaft that generates more than 500 hp and peak torque of 400 lb. ft. Ford claims it is “the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever.”
Ford said the GT350 will go on sale next year and pricing will be announced closer to the sale date. A spokesman did not offer further details.
With the redesigned sixth generation 2015 Mustang, Ford has expanded the Mustang’s global reach including the first production right-hand-drive Mustangs ever for countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia. Ford is adding 25 right hand-drive markets and 56 left-hand-drive markets for a total of 120 countries around the world.
Ford has been stoking excitement for a new performance Mustang with a series of teaser videos in recent weeks.
"We wanted to build the best possible Mustang for the places we most love to drive -- challenging back roads with a variety of corners and elevation changes -- and for the track on weekends,” Raj Nair, Ford's group vice president of global product development, said in a statement. “Every change we made to this car was driven by the functional requirements of a massive, responsive powerplant -- nimble, precise handling and massive stopping power.”
Ford, in a statement, said the “new GT350 builds on Carroll Shelby’s original idea -- transforming a great every-day car into a dominant road racer-- by taking advantage of a dramatically improved sixth-generation Mustang.”
Ford predicted enthusiasts would find the GT350 “the most balanced, nimble and exhilarating Mustang yet.”
“We optimized the aero shape of the car and then fine-tuned what was left to increase downforce and cooling airflow," said Chris Svensson, Ford's design director for the Americas. The front end is up to two inches lower than the stock Mustang GT.
The flat plane crankshaft engine design is “an architecture typically found only in racing applications or exotic European sports cars,” Ford said. For example, Ferrari has long used the flat plane design in its V-8s.
“This is an American interpretation of a flat-plane crankshaft V-8 and the 5.2-liter produces a distinctive, throaty howl from its four exhaust tips,” said Jamal Hameedi, chief engineer for Ford's global performance vehicles unit
“Unlike a traditional V8, where the connecting rods are attached to the crankshaft at 90-degree intervals, this design evenly spaces all crank pins at 180-degree intervals,” Ford said in a statement. “The 180-degree, flat-plane layout permits a cylinder firing order that alternates between cylinder banks, reducing the overlap of exhaust pressure pulses. When combined with cylinder-head and valvetrain advancements, this permits better cylinder breathing, further extending the performance envelope of the V8.”
Ford said it deemed the setup the best choice for a sports car designed to be at home both on the street and the track. The 5.2-liter V-8 will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission
Engineers also designed the suspension and brakes to maximize performance under varied road conditions.
Ford did not say what the top-speed of the GT350 will be, but said the brakes -- “the most track-credible brake system ever offered on a Ford vehicle in terms of absolute stopping power, fade resistance and brake pedal feel" -- could bring the car to a stop from high speed.
The responsiveness of the suspension is aided by “the first-ever Ford application of continuously controlled MagneRide dampers, which are filled with hydraulic fluid impregnated with iron particles."
The suspension can be adjusted nearly instantly when electrical current passes through the fluid, Ford said.
The interior has been upgraded with special Recaro sport seats upholstered with cloth unique to the GT350. Ford upgraded the gauges in keeping with the car’s performance orientation.
“We took the best Ford Mustang yet and massaged every aspect of the car that affects the performance driving experience,” said Hameedi. “We tested endlessly on the most challenging roads and tracks in the world, and we believe serious drivers will love the Shelby GT350 Mustang.”

Well done, Well done. As a kid growing up in Jamaica, when my taste for cars was being developed, I developed a soft spot for the Mach I's. I got a chance to drive one when I emigrated to the states, and a friend got drunk at a party and I was tasked to drive him home. I drove that around those Texas country curves and was thrilled by the opportunity. A friend at the same time had a decommissioned mustang cop car, and it was ugly but fast.

This really gets the juices flowing. The front airdam flows better with the lights now, this was a criticism I have with the standard version. And the power...sounds like cream. Love it, well done again. If I were in the market I would easily choose this over most of the current crop of performance vehicles.

Very nice and promising. Of all the American muscle cars, something like this is the closest thing I would ever consider......track focused Mustang.

It`s going to be interesting to see how this Shelby GT350 compares to the BMW M4 and Camero Z28.

Especially the Z28. The GT350 is aimed right at it.

Yes, agree that even the M4 is potentially a target here. It all depends how serious Ford is in capturing that market. The styling of this new Mustang is not that different from typical German performance coupes like the M4 and RS5.

Of the big three American brands, Ford has the most "European" influence in their designs, and if they tune this car a certain way, it really could take on BMW and Audi (and MB).

I like it a lot, especially the engine, but it will have to be hella capable to beat the Z28 around a track.

M

A couple of things:

- I can't believe I'm seeing a flat-plane crank V8 with an 8000 rpm rev range in an American muscle car. Awesome.
- It's very, very cool that the engine is naturally aspirated - I suspect that this will be one of the best Mustangs to drive ever
- I am impressed with the all the bits added to sharpen up the driving dynamics
- Muscle car + manual is also terrific: it makes for a great driving enthusiast's car in the traditionalist sense of the word
- Love the look of this thing
- I wish Ford would dispense with the blue backlighting of their buttons and switches - imo it cheapens the look of the interior, red or white please
- Ford is on a global product roll of late but I wonder if they they will make the Shelby GT350 available outside of the US
- All in all - I'd love to drive one

All I have to say is bring on the GT500, this is a little let down power wise, especially since Chrysler now have over 700hp in the Challenger and Charger.

This car is so boss. Ford is on a roll...

If Just_me had this as his weekend car and the ST as his daily driver, I'd personally fly out to Sweden to deliver a bottle of Johnny Blue and while he's quaffing on that, give him a foot-rub with pedicure and let him listen to bad 90's Swedish pop music.

Maybe Ford will offer this car in South Africa too?

..effing good but I was thinking to switch my engine for this. ST + FWD + 8000 rpm + 500 hp must be a wild experience

The standard Mustang , fully loaded with all the extras is for sale here and its cheaper than Golf R. This version, don't know if I'll ever see it in Sweden.
