2017 Ford GT With 40 Miles On The Clock Destroyed By Fire

I wonder if Ford will replace this one under warranty, with 40 miles on the clock I can't imagine that the owner will be held responsible unless he did something really dumb.

The TRS guy from Bahrain, who is buying up every new hypercar and owns the silly Sweeptail, reportedly bought 6(!) Ford GT's second-hand for around $2mill each. Crazy.

Are you sure about the Sweeptail, the car was in Norway last summer in a village very close to where I live, the owner had his superyacht also with him, Pelorous, she's owned by Hong Kong billionaire Sammy Tak Lee.

Hmm, wonder why... Ford GT Misses Its Production Target for the First Year:

Ford initially committed to building the second-generation GT for two years, with 250 units promised for each year. The Blue Oval said later it would add another two years onto the run of the race-bred supercar, bringing the total to 1,000. Well, things haven’t gone exactly as planned.

Motor Authority discovered through a Ford GT message board that Ford didn’t fulfill the full production run plans of the 2017 GT. We reached out to Ford, and a spokesman confirmed that Ford and its high-tech Canadian partner that builds the car, Multimatic, built just 138 2017 GTs instead of the 250 that had been promised.

Why the delay?

"This is a hand-built supercar, which we are committed to deliver flawlessly. We built into our process an extended ramp-up due to several factors such as global homologation testing and supplier constraints," a Ford spokesman said in a statement.

A follow-up phone call revealed that Multimatic hadn't built cars on this scale before and it took the company some time to meet its goal of building one car per work day. The first Ford GT came out of the shop in December 2016, but Multimatic didn't start building one car per day until the middle of 2017. That, teamed with some supplier issues and some minor delays in painting the special Victory cars to commemorate the GT's class win at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans, resulted in the production shortfall for the 2017 model year. The spokesman also noted that things are on schedule for the full run of 250 to be built for the 2018 model year.

At the current pace, however, that would leave total production at 888 units, 112 units shy of the initial promised total. So, will that leave the total four-year production run shy of the promised 1,000? We asked Ford.

“We are building one Ford GT a day and are committed to building the vehicle for at least four years,” a Ford spokesman said in a statement.

We pressed further: “We’re sticking to our initial commitment of 1,000 vehicles,” he said.

That would necessarily mean building the Ford GT for more than four years because Multimatic can only build 250 per year. Another half year or so would be needed to make up for the missing 112 cars from the short 2017 run.

No matter what, it appears, Ford enthusiasts will see the full run 1,000 GTs. It will just take longer than initially expected.

2017 Ford GT production fell short, but Ford will make up the difference

What a kick in the teeth to existing and soon-to-be owners.

Increasing production by 35% is quite significant. Flippers and owners will be annoyed but I hope the increase results in more Ford Gts actually being driven on the roads.

I'd feel it were a breach of contract. I mean, the cars were never good value-for-money performance at that price, the only point in paying it was for exclusivity.

Ferrari built about 900 more F40’s than the planned 400 units, I don’t think anyone is complaining today. I don’t think 350 extra is going to be a long term issue.

What does he mean by never seeing a car built like this before, hasn’t he been to Pagani, Koeniggsegg, Bugatti, or any other small manufacturer like Morgan, Ariel and Caterham they all build cars like this.

Maybe he meant that he hasn’t seen a huge company like Ford build cars like that anymore. You would expect it to be built on an assembly line highly automated.

He was stuck for superlatives and started BSing, which is a common journalist trait.

VW is a huge company yet Bugatti’s are built like this not on a production line. Which makes me think for small production runs investing in a moving production line isn’t efficient.

Not to get into the quality of ethics and the level of independence of modern day journalism, but Schmee and his likes are certainly not journalists. They cannot be trusted as an objective source of information and they are far from knowledgeable about the field. I'm under the impression that most of them can't really drive properly.

YT has made everyone and his mother famous, but it takes some effort to find quality content.

A moving production line has a huge acquisition and set-up cost and it certainly requires a cost-benefit analysis when there's the question of implementing such a method for a short production run.
