Challenger [Official] Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat

The Dodge Challenger is a full-size muscle car that was introduced in early 2008 originally as a rival to the evolved fifth-generation Ford Mustang and the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro.

If this 707 hp monster would be slower than those sub-600 hp cars... that would be surprising. :)

Amazing to think that these 2 cars have more power even than a Lambo Aventador! Holy crumbs!

Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat first drive review

The new 707bhp Challenger is an extreme beast that would make little sense on British roads, but we're glad it exists

What is it?
The Dodge Challenger is a legendary model for Chrysler. It’s the American company’s player in pony car game and the likes of Ford’s Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro have been its competition on and off for nearly 50 years.

The original Challenger came to market in 1969; in 2008, Dodge introduced the present, third-generation version. The large, two-door coupé uses a cut version of Chrysler’s waning LX architecture, which underpins the 300C saloon. Ford’s latest Mustang GT is substantial shorter and lighter than the Challenger, for reference.

Improvements since launch include the addition of an optional ‘TorqueFlite’ eight-speed automatic transmission across the model line-up, as well as retro exterior and interior updates that mimic the iconic 1971 Challenger. The new Challenger SRT Hellcat is the biggest news for the 2015 model year and is by far the most extreme version of Dodge’s muscle car.

Its supercharged 6.2-litre V8 develops 707bhp, along with 650lb ft of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard but our test car featured the optional automatic transmission.

It’s a wild car. The Hellcat can guzzle the full volume of its 15.4-gallon fuel tank in only 13 minutes. Its supercharger ingests oxygen through a huge 92mm throttle body and the output of a base Ford Fiesta – 79bhp – is needed to spin that twin-screw blower. Each 6.2-litre engine is run on a dyno for 42 minutes before installation. No CO2 emissions are stated for the beastly V8 and we don’t think Chrysler really cares.

The Hellcat’s 20-inch wheels are available in either matte black or dark bronze (what Dodge calls 'Brass Monkey') finish. Mounted on the large wheels are 275/40 ZR20 Pirelli P Zero tires. The Hellcat’s exclusive 'Air Catcher' intake port sits inside one of the front lamps and ducts intake air into the engine.

The available exterior colours are a marketing department’s dream and include: B5 Blue, Pitch Black, Sublime Metallic (green), and TorRed. You can also order the bonnet in Satin Black, just in case you find the Hellcat too subtle.

What is it like?
The two-door Dodge feels huge and you’re perched quite high, in seats offering little support. Back seat access is cumbersome. One can’t help but wonder how a vehicle so large features such compromised packaging.

But thumb the starter button and as the 707bhp V8 erupts into a rage of fury, you quickly forget about the glaring faults of the ageing platform.

That supercharged engine blasts the Hellcat through the quarter-mile in a very impressive 11.2 seconds at 125 mph, matching the 533kg lighter and twice-as-expensive Porsche 911 GT3. If you’ve made a deal with the devil, feel free to explore the 199mph top speed – which trumps the GT3 by 3mph. We recommend a more saint-like velocity ceiling, as the Hellcat is no Porsche in the chassis department.

That’s not to say it’s complete rubbish in the twisty stuff. Sure, the Challenger moves around, porpoising and hopping about when pushed, but those quirks actually add to the fun. It’s also not nearly as intimidating as the extreme specs suggest. Yes, wheelspin and lurid drifts are only a wiggle of your big toe away but the manic Dodge never truly scares you.

The stability control system's Track mode is perfectly relaxed, offering loads of fun while still keeping you out of the weeds. The eight-speed automatic transmission swaps ratios impressively, even when manually short-shifted from, say, third to fourth gear with smoke billowing from the rear tyres.

Considering the weight and size, Chrysler engineers buttoned down the Challenger quite successfully – three-mode Bilstein dampers, 390mm Brembo brakes, and a limited-slip differential are a big part of this – but the ultra-light steering brings you back to the reality of the brash experience.

Should I buy one?
The truth is, the Hellcat makes absolutely no sense. It lives in its own world, cut off from the reality of a changing planet. It represents the United States of America perfectly, and proudly.

The Challenger’s size, thirst, and rather poor ride quality on lumpy tarmac mean it will be pretty much worthless on British roads. It’s also left-hand-drive only and not officially sold in the UK, but don’t let that stop you from contacting an importer of American iron.

Ultimately the Hellcat is an exciting dance with the devil. It’s a glorious, extroverted machine that puts a smile on your face each and every time you fire up that virile and boastful 707bhp V8.

2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
Standard model goes on sale later this year
Dodge has announced the 2015 Charger SRT Hellcat will be priced from $63,995 - including a $1,700 gas guzzler tax - in the United States.

Billed as the "quickest, fastest and most powerful sedan in the world," the Charger SRT Hellcat will go into production early next year and feature a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that develops 707 bhp (527 kW) and 650 lb-ft (880 Nm) of torque. The engine is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission that enables the car to run the quarter mile in 11.0 seconds and hit a top speed of 204 mph (328 km/h).

If that's a little too hardcore, the entry-level Charger SE costs $27,995 and comes nicely equipped with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster and a Uconnect infotainment system. The model also has Dark Brushed trim, a dual-zone climate control system and a six-speed audio system.

Power is provided by a 3.6-liter V6 engine that develops 292 bhp (217 kW) and 260 lb-ft (353 Nm) of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system.

The company also offers a variety of other variants but one of the more important ones is the $32,995 Charger R/T which features a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine that develops 370 bhp (276 kW) and 395 lb-ft (535 Nm) of torque. Other notable highlights include the $39,995 Charger R/T Scat Pack and $47,385 SRT 392 which both feature a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine with 485 bhp (361 kW) and 475 lb-ft (643 Nm) of torque.

Here's the full pricing breakdown:

^^I won't lie. I know these cars won't handle worth a damn, but I am still seriously impressed. It's like Dodge is having a single-make muscle car war. :D

Also. Not to cause rift with my non-US brethrens. But Muscle is something I don't expect others in the world to understand, ESPECIALLY Europeans. So, I really don't care to listen to the opinions of European magazines on this car. These cars are bonkers and that's what muscle was designed to be.

To be honest I am not normally a fan of most American cars but I love their muscle cars, they have a different understanding for sure of the Europeans where the USA will use brute power, huge engine capacity and massive noise and powersliding all the way for their power cars. I love the way Dodge comes out from no where and then decides to bring out a MONSTER 700bhp super saloon to outdo not just every American muscle car but outperform the best European super saloons (E63 AMG, M5 and RS7) with this beast!

Fiat tried to kill the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 Hellcat engine

2015 Dodge Challenger SRT / 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Hellcat
Project was shelved for four months
The Dodge Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcat have garnered a lot of attention but a new report is indicating the models were almost killed off entirely.

According to Automotive News, Fiat told Chrysler to halt the development of the Hellcat engine in early 2011. The engineering team was broken up and put to work on other projects but SRT wasn't ready to throw in the towel. They continued to lobby for the engine and the company's product development committee eventually gave it the green-light four months later.

Their change of heart lead to the development of a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine that develops 707 bhp (527 kW) and 650 lb-ft (880Nm) of torque. This enables the Challenger SRT Hellcat to be the "most powerful muscle car" ever created, while the Charger SRT Hellcat claims to be the "quickest, fastest and most powerful sedan in the world."

Maserati should pull the pussy little Ferrari v8 from the Quattroporte and dump this bad boy in it, that would be a beast.

Maybe they should dump this engine in a special 4wd Fiat 500! That would be a monster!

Hmmm a 707hp V8 would be a downgrade from a weedy 530hp V8?

I'm with you man. While it sounds like this isn't a sophisticated engine...it actually is. The amount of work it took to make this kind of power reliable in a car that costs less than a fully loaded M3/4? Yeah...haters gonna hate.

What a name! Hellcat, the new found expression of MUSCLE:cool: Truly, 2013/14 was a year in which I found myself becoming a real fan of American cars again. I really "dig" their new trucks from the ever so popular and best selling F150, the new GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado also Toyota's new Tundra! The new Corvette, Hellcat and Cadillac Escalade even the new Chevy Tahoe.

OT: In SA, 2015 will bring our first American-lookalike (LCI) Ford Ranger "Truck" :)

I know American trucks don't get a lot of love around the world. But seriously, they are some tough mother f__kers. Those things can take a beating and last a LONG time. I know many car enthusiasts, especially Europeans, like to say that all car guys should drive an Alfa. I'll say this, you have to drive an American full sized truck too.

FCA has delayed a number of product launches and updates across its brands, includingDodge. Though the shifting of Charger and Challenger to the Alfa Romeo Giulia’s new Giorgio platform has been put on hold, the current models will get special variants, including an all-wheel-drive version of the Challenger and a wide-bodied Challenger SRT Hellcat, to tide fans over.

According to a report from Automotive News, Dodge will launch the first-ever all-wheel-drive Challenger model, called the GT AWD, this fall. No other details were given, but the all-wheel-drive system could be similar to the one offered on the Charger, which now comes paired only to the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. All-wheel drive was formerly offered with the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, and the combo is still available to law enforcement in the Charger Pursuit. The GT AWD will be joined by a wide-body variant of the Challenger SRT Hellcat called the Challenger ADR in 2017.

As for the Charger, special models like the recently announced Daytona will hopefully keep the sedan fresh until the new model arrives. Both the Charger and Challenger are said to switch to the Giorgio platform by 2018. The move should shed precious weight, more than 400 pounds for Charger and about 500 for Challenger. A Giorgio-based convertible variant called the Barracuda will arrive in 2021.
