CLS [Official] 2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS

The Mercedes-Benz CLS (initially called the CLS-Class) is a series of executive cars produced by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original model was a four-door sedan based on the Mercedes E-Class platform, marketed as a four door coupé. An estate (shooting brake) model was later added to the model range with the second generation CLS.
Honestly, I don´t know what MB is playing to nowadays. They need powerful engines, specially the V8. They have in mind current BMW engines, which have been in the market for years now, and don´t think in the comming ones. It´s gonna be ridiculous to see a CLS 500 with 400 hp and a 650i with 450 hp.

Same with the new V6. BMW has their 35i engines since 2006, with 206 hp, and 4 years later MB presents an engine with the very same output?.

Things like these ones make me be 100% sure that if I had to buy a mid-size sedan I´d go for a BMW 535i instead of a E350, mostly because of MB´s demerits.

Not quite ridiculous, considering the Mercedes engine will likely have more torque. Now get me started on their V6s...lol. I think a turbo version will soon solve that problem with like 350+ hp.

Yes. In the USA the V8 looks like 300kW or 402hp, prob more in Europe? :t-drive:

eMercedes-Benz said:
In the U.S., the V8-powered CLS550 will produce 402hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. In Europe, two six-cylinder models will initially be available in January 2011: the CLS350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY producing 265 hp and the CLS350 BlueEFFICIENCY producing 306 hp and fitted with the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engine range will be extended just two months later with the addition of the CLS250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, producing 204 hp. In the ECE consumption cycle, it consumes 5.1 liters of diesel/100 km.

The intelligent lightweight construction used in the CLS makes a significant contribution towards addressing the classic conflicting goals of low weight and high strength. As a result the 2012 CLS550 is the first vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to be fitted with doors featuring a full aluminum construction. They consist of deep-drawn aluminum panels with extruded sections, and are around 52 lbs lighter compared with conventional steel doors. In addition, the hood, front fenders, trunk lid, parcel shelf, various support sections as well as major parts of the chassis and engine are all made from aluminum too.

Mercedes is getting there....lol. The tank is switching to lighter armor.

I seen the car later on today , and it looks better than it does in photographs with the chiseled rear arch working well in reality.

My only problem is that the car has lost it's identity.
The original CLS was that, original and it did not match any other Mercedes-Benz model. It was highly individual.
Now it is obvious that it is a variant from the E-Klasse because it inherits some styling elements from the E but attempts to make them organic and fluid with curves instead of technical angles with the E.

Of course this is the new styling language that will feature on every Mercedes-Benz for the future, however when you look at how clean and fluid the SLS is for example you begin to wonder why they never enhanced the clean look as showcased on the beautiful SLS as a design language.

So the new bm 6er will have the most powerful engine of any of their base models?

The CLS's doors will probably feel like feathers then. My 212's doors are so light, it's easy to accidentally fling them open way too hard/fast. It's deceiving, considering how "tank-like" strong the door steels actually are (far more than any previous cars that actually had doors that literally felt "tank-like" heavy).

The one thing I don't really like is these 5 spoke rims they are using. I think they look quite ordinary and boring. They don't add much to the design, almost look like an afterthought.

There is one more thing I don't like and it's the horizontal chrome trim aove the license plate on the back. I don't think it should extend from panel gap to the other. It makes that area look sloppy. they should have it it short of the gap, continued a body line instead, and had the chrome cut off with a curve slightly upward.

I agree about that chrome strip. Looks so crude and unfinished in its execution. The S-Class and E-Classes strips are much better executed.

About the HP. Honestly, I know to car enthusiast groups, it's a numbers game, and a one-up the other guy game. But 400 HP is more than enough for the CLS demo, and frankly, I don't want Jane Dane and John Doe with missiles for engines parading around my neighborhood, not to mention, the underclassmen to will end up buying these rocketships years into their life-cycle, have all that power at their "disposal", literally speaking.

I'm sure it'll perform great, and the TQ and linear power curve will make for a luxurious and effortless drive, with brutal power on tap. Also, these are now boosted cars, so a little tweaking of said boost, will unleash massive power that's sitting on the bench.

Excuse me but what are you doing?
He was only talking about CLS, not BMW which you mention. His post was fine.

May be a bit of an over-reaction on my part as I read the post again. Just a little hyper-sensitive when it comes to BMW "contributors" knocking the competition. If it was just an opinion, obviously he's entitled to it.

The CLS looks absolutely incredible, but I'm surprised MB hasn't released the usual tidal wave of press images like they usually do...hopefully in the next couple of days :eusa_thin

Interesting how that one Edmunds guy said it "doesn't look much like a Coupe anymore", i.e; more Sedan-ish. That's a good thing to me, as I think the OG's windows were a bit too small. I think I'll like the overall shape of this one better.

Either way, I consider it a Sedan, I don't care what M-B's marketing department says. :D

That said, with the W221, the W212, the CLS, and even the W204, M-B are showcasing the fact that they are the benchmark when it comes to Sedans. And it shouldn't be any other way. They have the hottest Sedan lineup out there by far IMO. BMW have made HUGE improvements this time around, but the 3-Series is slightly weighing them down to me (it's kind of a middle ground between the Bangle-fug, and new-hotness of Bimmer designs).

It´s true MB has a very nice up SEDANS line-up (SUVs line up is not as nice as BMW´s o Audi´s ones). Nor the S, nor the C nor the E are ugly cars, they are all very nice. Audi has some stupid designs, like the A8, and BMW has the 3 Series, that could look far better.

BMW has done wonders with its latest creations., the 7er, althought not being as good looking as the S-Class is far better looking than the A8, and has one of the most awesome interiors I´ve ever seen. The 5er is probably one of the three nicest sedans out there, if not the nicest one, and the 3er is still a very good car in every way.

With this CLS, having seen the real life pics, I have to agree that it is not a Coupe with four doors anymore, it´s just a sportier looking sedan. The very only thing that bothers me about the exterior is that stupid looking shoulder line, which curves upwards instead of downwars, as in the current Benzes. It doesn´t look bad at the beginning, but now just does not make sense. This is something you complaint about several times when we were looking at the spy pics, and now I realise how right you were.

The interior is simply the best looking MB interior in the last 10 years, I even prefer it over the SLS one. There´s a tiny thing I strongly dislike, and it is the AC controls, which look far worse than the E-Class ones, and seem to be quite basic.
