Let’s face it. Examples of the Audi Fox (American market B1 80) are rare enough, but the elusive Fox GTI is even more unobtainable. So, when we spot one on Craigslist… even with a less attractive automatic transmission… we feel it is newsworthy. Even better, this particular example is listed at barely more than a thousand bucks and boasts just 53,000 miles.
For those who don’t know, the Fox GTI was a USA only affair. Born in a day was something less specific to the Volkswagen brand, both within the Volkswagen Group and also the entire industry, the Fox GTI beat the Rabbit GTI to market by several years. Like the VW that also wore the name, it featured a very conservative boost in performance and was largely differentiated by upgraded trim.
For the Fox GTI, this meant some cool vinyl stripes on the outside, a sport steering wheel, additional gauges and upgraded seats. Unfortunately, and unlike the VW GTI, the Fox GTI was offered with an automatic transmission and this car is proof of that.
Looking over the always low-res photos available on Craigslist, this Fox GTI appears to be fairly solid for its age but by no means pristine. That said, the low mileage and relatively preserved interior are a big plus for anyone looking to restore it. The $1250 entry price seems totally fair too.
