Nissan installing fuel-consumption meters

Nissan has announced its plans to install fuel-consumption meters to all of its cars, something Euro makes have been doing for years. Nissan says it’s doing it to promote awareness of more economical driving habits and that it’s part of its new ‘Nissan Green Program 2010’ environmental action plan.

Developers will add a small gauge that shows how much fuel is being consumed at any given moment as well as average consumption, measured in L/km. Nissan will slowly roll-out the meters on all its facelifted and new models. Until now, it’s offered navigation systems which show both instant and average fuel-efficiency.

According to Nissan’s own testing, simply having the indicator on a car’s dash led to improvements in fuel consumption of around ten percent as drivers were constantly aware of how much fuel they were using.

I have the primitive version of the modern fuel consumption meter in my mercedes. It is the most annoying thing on the dash. Always swinging back and forth. It drives me insane. It's not even accurate. I finally had to put something in front of it as to stop it from distracting me while driving. I'm a bit OCD as it is. This made it really bad. Hah... I have problems maybe...

Yup, but my 2001 E46 Coupé & my current 2005 E46 have an anolog gauge. I'm pretty sure my dad's old 1998 E39 had one as well.

But perhaps Nissan's system seems a tiny bit more updated.

I remember them back in 80's. Scared the hell out of me, I though the car had either lost oil pressure or was running hot...lol! Mind you I was driving a car I shouldn't have been (i.e. too young).

I have it on my W126 300SE. I love it.

I have one in my Volvo, too! It's digital though, but i like BMW's old analog econo-meter better. I first saw it in an E36.

PS. That econo-meter can be very distracting. I have caught myself watching this instead of the road when i hit the gas, when it rises from about 7-8l/100km to 40-45l/100km. Fun...

I have it in my E90 though its an analog meter. My previous car - a Passat, had it as well. It showed instant consumption digitally. I love having this around....it can be distracting, but the first time I saw it, I thought it was quite cool...

I love the analogue one on BMWs etc. They look cool! Have a didgital one on my corolla.
