NIO has just launched its top end luxury EV crossover/saloon, the NIO ET9 in China.

Depending on how it drives, it could give the German luxury cars such as Mercedes S-class/EQS/Maybach and 7-series/i7 as well as Lucid Air and Tesla Model S some serious headaches.

It has an impressive-looking interior with loads of space. It's a big car, at 5320mm long, 2017mm wide, and 1600mm high. The interesting bit of tech is the suspension system, which makes the car totally flat even when going over speed bumps.

Nio and BYD keep creating bangers. They give us flagship feature and amenities for less!

Looking forward to inspecting one up close one day.

Not exactly a looker though.
At least they have the courage to do something different...

I've just seen the latest leak for the new CLA. Boring as heck .

Why do I mention it? Because probably it will cost more than this NIO ET9....

Which German luxury EV looks nicer?

Genuinely, the i7 looks better than this.

I'm not really seeing that much uniquely different about it, personally.

It's ugly and totally out of proportion, not anything that caters for the needs of the European or US customer. This guy is Russian, obviously promoting anything Chinese as they can't get any cars out of the West anymore due to sanctions. They'll all be speaking Chinese in Moscow very soon so they'd better get used to Chinese cars.

You must be wearing BMW rose-tinted glasses, as the i7 is as ugly as a car can be. The front is horrendous and as high and vertical like a London bus. This car has far more harmonious styling, in videos at least. It is not perfect, I think it would have been better as a hatch instead of having a normal saloon boot and maybe it is also a bit too high. I do think the German brands, Audi, BMW, Mercedes and VW need to rethink the styling direction of their cars, their designers are not producing memorable looking cars, but producing designs that are getting less attractive with every new generation.

Which doesn't? This car is disgusting looking from every angle
It is probably more appealing than an i7 to be honest. The BMW has me scratching my head every time I see it on the road. What were BMW thinking when they ticked the approval check box for the design to pass to production? The back and front don't match, it was like 2 different design teams were working on the front and back and then brought them together in the production stage.

I've never personally perceived the i7 to be "ugly" per se. Simply far too massive in its exterior dimensions, especially overall length and height. And like many others, that grill does not appeal to me at all. The basic foundation of the i7 exterior design is quite sound. Grill and size spoil the recipe.

I continue to regret that BMW did not use THIS as an accurate template for its big luxury sedans:

Nearly 11 years old and still looking as fresh as can be. The VFL Concept is a masterstroke in exterior design that would shame current German (as well as most other if not all other) luxury sedan offerings.
Absolutely gorgeous.

It is a shame BMW did not unleash this beautiful design for its 7 models, its near perfection in every single angle. The design is timeless and still would turn heads, if launched today it would mix in well and at the same time stand out from the boring crowd.

I’ve driven the ET 7 and was left disappointed. It would be one of the last picks in that class for me. The Auto Motor und Sport Test sums it up nicely. Not sure if this will be that much better.

Meh, I don't fancy cars that look like an Avocado from the side.

I wish the Germans would go back to their roots and bring out some retro versions of past models. I am disappointed in BMW, Mercedes and VW in their current design philosophy it just doesn't look ground breaking like their older cars.

Why can't they bring out beautiful cars like the E31 8 series?
