Astra New Opel Astra

The Opel Astra is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) developed and produced by the Opel since 1991. It was first launched in September 1991 as a direct replacement to the Opel Kadett. As of 2025, the car slots between the smaller Corsa supermini and the larger Frontera subcompact crossover SUV.
Oh please, could my cherished (not!) Kadett get any uglier?

Strewth, it's hideous. It looks like an MPV. Instant negative vibe. Yuck. Gross. I don't care...

Major step backwards. The Genesis coupe-ish head lights don't suit the car at all.

Looks great, but I really hate the little windows manufacturers are putting between the A pillar and the front door window.
Very sleek looking though, I like Vauxhall's new designs.

With all the dynamic & fresh designs coming out from Renault Megane / Citroen C4 / Mazda 3 / Oopel Astra / Fiat Bravo / upcoming Ford Focus / Kia / Hyundai etc the VI VW Golf looks like the ultimate Granpamobile.

Well... I suppose I'm must be grandpa then. Because, I think this is rather handsome, actually.

When I say handsome, I mean as long you don't go for the base "S" model with the steelies 'n' plastic hubcaps. Go for the SE and GT models.

I'm talking about base models. Any sport kits, or sporty models make cars looking much better anyway.

Golf IV ain't a looker IRL. It's quite bland. But I guess VW are (again) targeting customers with more conservative / restrained taste - since everybody else are now offering more dynamic & fresh designs (compared to Golf).

agree with Eni about the MK 6 Golf, it looks terribly bland in the flesh. Hope the GTi version is impressive.

With regards to the Astra, its a bit questionable. While it is a fresh design, it neither looks progressive nor regressive. I'll need to see it in the flesh before making final judgement.

The grille should be larger. This one looks too "90s-like". Also the rear design is slightly busy, especially around the Opel-badge. Otherwise it's OK IMO.

I'll have a Golf Mk 6 over this any day of the week. Rain or Shine.

VW doesn't need the Golf to be anything other than what it is - a Golf. It is as enduring and recognisable as any iconic product is - automotive or other - and therein lies the appeal of the Golf. It's timeless and classless. It is the quintessential car for anyone and everyone and its success is entrenched in incremental evolution of its visual identity.

In stark contrast, the Opel Kadett/Astra has always been a model whose generations have seen dramatic stylistic depatures from previous ones - a consistent "out with the old, in with the new" approach. I stopped buying Opels but still own a Polo after a decade of buying VW products.

I've driven the new Golf 6 1.4 TSI and, as an all-round product, it stands head and shoulders above anything else I've driven in that class. And, thankfully, it still looks like a Golf (which is a great thing) and not some anonymous, MPV-like monobox.
