Genesis G80 New Generation Genesis G80

The Genesis G80 is an executive sedan manufactured by Genesis. The G80 model was previously introduced as the second-generation Hyundai Genesis model (DH) and then rebranded as the G80 in 2016 after Genesis Motor was established as a separate luxury division of Hyundai.

I had hoped for more, especially from an American magazine, but the summary reads as follows:

For this comparison, though, the behavior of both cars was so different that it wasn't hard to determine a winner. The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E 450 was far superior than the 2021 Genesis G80 3.5T Prestige. The Mercedes' killer ride quality, peaceful cabin, and updated technology raised the bar in the segment. Mercedes has been playing on this field for years, and the midcycle update to the E-Class is proof that a good car can become a better car.

Genesis still has some work to do. In order to compete against the best of Germany, it must improve its chassis to deliver a softer ride quality. The G70, our 2019 Car of the Year, is proof that it can do better; the G80 still needs more time in the oven to taste right. We're sure the ride quality won't be the same in a few years, but for now the Mercedes E-Class is the clear winner.

The Genesis is a nice refreshing entrant to this class, but ultimately Mercedes Benz have been in this segment for many years and have got tons of experience in producing class leading cars and this is where the Genesis is still not quite up to the mark.

I do not understand Hyundai/Kia/Genesis when it comes to suspension tuning. They've shown flashes of brilliance here and there but largely lag behind rivals in the ride/handling department. Here they are trying to launch a luxury brand and still manage to make mistakes. The U.S. market GV80 has also gotten criticism for its ride.

I hope they don't wait until the refresh to start making changes.

I drove this car a few weeks ago, the 3.5t. It's a really nice car, but there is no connection with the driving experience. It's more like a car for you to sit in than anything else. 5-Series please.

I figured that was the case, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Kind of underlines Genesis' statement that they won't be making a performance trim.

Yeah that's unfortunate because I think a sport version like on the previous G80 would be a far more desirable car.

Have you driven the new FL E-class yet or LCI 5-series to compare? I did read another US mag compared the Genesis to the new E450 and it lost against the Mercedes in driving abilities and refinement.

No I haven't driven either facelift yet.

It’s not a dedicated BEV- will have ICE engines too. That’s also a rendering and not the real thing.

A rendering ? Well, that fooled me alright.

Still, I appreciate the design of the "lower 2/3s" . Very clean, no nonsense. The roof, however, is maybe a tad too upright and a bit more rakish A-and C pillars wouldn't be bad. Also not really a fan of opera windows.

"Real", I suspect. And yes-you're right. NOT dedicated BEV drivetrain.
