New Diesels For Audi A3 And A4.

Audi is introducing a new 168bhp two-litre TDI turbo diesel to its A3 and A4 ranges. The new engine, which boasts piezo injection technology and a diesel particulate filter, effectively replaces the existing 138bhp unit, though that one will remain on sale.

The basic performance figures are very similar for the two cars. The A3 (pictured) is quicker than the A4 from 0-62mph (8.2 seconds against 8.6), but the A4's top speed of 142mph beats that of the A3 by 4mph. Combined fuel economy is 48.7mpg in each case.

At least, that's how things stand for the front-wheel drive models with six-speed manual transmission. Quattro four-wheel drive technology is also available (giving better acceleration but a slightly lower top speed), and there's also the option of the S-tronic twin clutch automatic gearbox.

Prices are slightly higher than for the less powerful cars. The A3 range starts at £18,930 for the entry-level car and rises to £24,405 for the Sportback quattro S line. Among the A4s, the base price is £22,965, while the top-of-the-range Avant quattro S line costs £26,265.

All models are available to order now, and UK deliveries are expected to start in July.

Maybe MB will have more, better 4-cylinder diesels once the next C-class hits the showrooms. I hope so. Not to mention better 4-cylinder petrol engines, but that's another issue..

Anyhow, according to the WCF version of this news, the new Audi 2.0 TDI diesel makes the same 320Nm (at a wider rev range), but why does the VW version make 350Nm? Or are they completely different engines? Or am I missing something?

I didn't think the MPG was that good, it's very good considering the performance!

Does anyone know when this engine is put into the golf, and if its going to be branded a GTD?

Go check out the VW UK site. It's right there. They've made it into the GT range, and made the old "GT" spec into "Sport" spec.

The fuel economy is worse than the old engine, but considering the performance gains, I'd say it was definitely worth it.

When (if?) this engine makes it into the Passat, locally, I'm going for a test drive as soon as I can..

They don't seem to have changed it yet, but thanks for telling me whats going to happen in the future!

Wow this looks cool.

Like Snake said, I really hope to see MB's new engines when the new C comes out.
