Offered on the A6 & A7

Audi has announced plans to offer a new, bi-turbo diesel engine on the A6, A6 Allroad and A7 Sportback.
Displacing 3.0-liters, the engine produces 313 PS (230 kW / 309 hp) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission and a quattro all-wheel drive system which enables the A6 sedan to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.1 seconds (5.3 seconds for the A6 Avant / A7) and hit a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
Despite being powerful, the engine is relatively efficient thanks to a start/stop system and an "innovative thermal management system that quickly brings the coolant and oil up to their operating temperatures." Thanks to these measures, the engine averages 44.1 mpg UK (36.7 mpg US / 6.4 L/100km) with CO2 emissions of 169 g/km.
Models equipped with the engine also have a sound actuator which "transforms the typical TDI exhaust note into a more sonorous roar that is closer to the output of a high-performance petrol engine."

Whats up with the number 313?
BMW 535d also have 313 hp, just like this engine. Dont tell me Mercedes also have 313 hp.

^ Correct. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how it compares with the 535d because that engine is epic.

@Just_me, please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Audi originally quoted this figure at its press release and shortly afterwards BMW upped their engines output to match. It's a repeat of the RS4 and the M3 where one company is shadowing the other. It actually makes me question whether the rumored S6 diesel will have an identical output to the M550d or the will the RS6 have anything more or less than 560hp.

What a marvellous engine. It packs a good punch that is worthy of powering a diesel version of the S6 and S7. Audi can pull a BMW and branding a few diesel models as S-cars.

I dont know, could be. I know BMW did it with previous generation 740d, first they said it would have 300 hp but after Audi or Mercedes ( I dont remember who) relesead their diesel they changed the output to 330hp/750nm.

What is interesting is that:

A6 Sedan 3.0 TDI 313hp - 0-100 km/h = 5,1 seconds
S6 Sedan 4.0 TFSI 420hp - 0-100 KM/h = 4,9 seconds

The S6 is just 0.2 seconds faster to 100 km/h, then a "diesel A6"...

^ What that shows you is that Audi are being quite conversative with their figures, especially so with the S6.

That's what I was saying in my previous post. It's effectively a diesel powered S-Car minus the cosmetic details. With large cars its all about torque and given Audi's four wheel drive configuration with torque vectoring, the full might of the diesel engine gets put to good use.

If I am not mistaken this engine is "old" news. It was announced in Audi's media site on 16 July 2011, with the A6 Avant press kit, and must be in sale since the A6 Avant launch.

:)

This was the UK Press Release as prices have now been announced for the UK.

This engine is infact old news, the 313ps is marketing speak for 230kW (higher is better).
bmw at the time was "only" 286ps (210kW) but have since updated the engine to match.
I hate the ps/bhp ratings. My engine is rated at 155kW for the australians, 211ps for the germans and 208bhp for the british.
Similarly the new bmw engine is 280kW / 381ps / 375bhp
All manufacturers build engines to match a specific kW rating, ps/bhp ratings derived from that.
And since I am on this matter same goes for the stupid 0-62mph/0-124mph/etc. times. Use km/h for heavens sake.
Only thing I can think of that's worse it's bmw badging. 550d for a 3 liter engine. Cue a few years from now 990d for a 0.4 liter with 8 turbos...
My car has a 2.0T badge at the rear and strangely enough is a 2l turbo. I mean what's wrong with that?

Because the same capacity of engine is used across multiple models. The BMW 316d, 318d and 320d, for example, all use the 2.0 litre engine. How can they call all these different models the 320d?

Well when you purchase the car it will say 320d 130kW for example. If you mean the badge on the rear look at porsche for example ,the panamera has about 10 models, some of them bound to be using the same engine size/different output. Same as mini. Another example Audi have totally dropped their engine size badging, you just get TFSI as a 1.4 or 2.0 badge is nothing to be proud of and with engines getting smaller and smaller day by day... m550d is blatantly advertising a 5.5l, an m5d would have sufficied. And yes I know the diesel is not a "real" m car, I don't consider anything 2t/turbo/4wd/automatic m either.

Best example in the industry today is the "6.3 AMG"... which is a 6.2 litre :D

On a more serious note, the claimed figures for l/100 km are very nice and pretty much inline with what I could get out of the current A6 2.0 TDi.

^Not a 5.5l but a 5.0l that's what it could be suggesting :usa7uh:
Correct.

Also correct aboout the 6.2
Am I the only one that wishes a 328i would have a 2.8l motor (preferably I6 no turbo like in the good old days). Badge your low power version 320i and the high power 328is if need be.
About Audi fuel consumption figures I'd take those with several shovels of salt. Mine claims 8.6l/100km. Double that is achievable but not without effort. Even with the lightest foot/eagle eye anticipation of traffic/lots of coasting I could never get even close to the lab conditions rolling road figures. I have found the only useful bit about these claimed figures is you can compare one car to another so a car that claims 8l/100km will drink more fuel than one that claims 7l/100km. Diesels obviously sip far less but what I like about them even if you rag them within an inch of their life they don't suffer nowhere near the drop in economy that a petrol motor does. That's efficiency of compression ignition and low rpm for you.

The "313ps" engine is a perfect match for the Q5 and should have been offered all along. But that's the boy racer in me talking. A more realistic 2.0 TTDI would render it obsolete. A diesel engine will never sound like a petrol one but sadly petrol engines have started sounding like diesel ones!

Haha, no, that is what you want to see. What you really see, is the 550d being faster than an S6. LOL.

OK Klier, you may well be correct in thinking the M550d will be quicker... well up to a point but why do you feel the figures for the S6 aren't conservative because if you look at the S4 you will see that Audi quote 0-100km/h in 5.0s yet it's well known to be capapble of posting sub 4.5s 0-60mph times. Is it not fair to assume the S6 will show a similar drop in acceleration times?
