I've spend a lot of time driving the new 1-series. The car is quiet however, there are road noise coming from the wheel house much more than it does from previous generation 1er but everything else is quiet. I suggest you read my review: http://www.germancarforum.com/content/110-just_me-s-review-bmw-118i.html
It's a common problem with most new cars now, wind and mechanical noises are being suppressed better than road surface noises to the extent that tyre noise sound louder than before which actually isn't the case. When they get that sorted these things will be as quiet as a library.

Road noise can vary so much depending on tyre choice. One review they say a car is brilliantly quiet and the next they are complaining about road noise. And it's down to the tyres. It doesn't help that a lot of manufacturers, Mercedes included, tend to strike short term contracts with a certain tyre supplier and then fit these to the vehicles. 3 months later they've struck another supply deal and they are fitted to the exact same vehicles. The result can be massive differences in road noise. Our C-class has continentals which are brilliantly quiet and our E has Bridgestone Potenzas which must be causing quite a racket because our C has noticeably less road noise than the E.
