Audi has kicked off development of a new performance orientated crossover model to counter the BMW X6.
Set to be called the Q6, the five-seat crossover is rumoured to be based around the same four-wheel drive underpinnings as the second-generation Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, both of which use a short wheelbase (2895mm) version of the Volkswagen Group’s so-called Colorado platform that in long-wheelbase (3000mm) form is also used beneath the Audi Q7.
Nothing has been made official, but in an interview with German media representatives at the recent Geneva auto show, Audi boss Rupert Stadler, alluded to the new German crossover, saying, “We can imagine a model between the Q5 and the Q7... a coupé-like, four-wheel driven model.”

Audi’s decision to add the Q6 to its line-up comes after lobbying calls from its North American and Chinese subsidiaries for a standard-sized SUV to counter the BMW X6, global sales of which have more than doubled original estimates since its launch in 2008.
As with its key rival, the Q6 is likely to arrive in the US with a range of V6 and V8 petrol and diesel engines, together with a V6 gasoline engine-electric motor hybrid drive option similar to that used by the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne Hybrids.
The decision to provide the new model with what Stadler describes as “coupé-like” styling and standard “four-wheel drive” also paves the way for an outwardly sporting variant from Audi quattro, the same division responsible for the company’s diverse range of RS models. While still early days, Audi is thought to be considering a range-topping Q6 RS model powered by the new turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, set to make its debut in the new-generation RS6 at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
Despite doubts about the sales potential at launch in 2008, the BMW X6 has proven a remarkable success. The latest figures provided by BMW reveal overall sales of 110,622 – some 43,322 of which were recorded in 2010, including 3082 X6Ms.

I don't understand why why autocar would make such outlandish claims.:eusa_doh:

That would make for very strange automobile I wouldn't rule out the head lights looking that way though.

Audi Q6 will rival the BMW X6 in 2016

Crowning Audi’s new line-up of sporty SUVs will be a new Q6 model, first revealed by Autocar in April. The BMW X6 rival had been tipped to be the first of Audi’s new Q-cars to reach showrooms and to be based on today’s Q7, but it now won’t be seen until 2016 at the earliest.

That’s because it will instead be underpinned by an MLB-based platform used by today’s Q5 and set to be picked up by the Q4 and Porsche Cajun. As part of a new engineering programme aimed at lowering the weight of all future Audi models, it will receive a predominantly aluminium body with composite plastic and carbonfibre elements.

Audi Q6 chassis test-mule spied for first time

All-new Q6 being developed based on the Q5 which we see here with an extended body shell and wheelbase

This is an Audi Q6 chassis test mule spied for the first time while getting one of its first workouts on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

A giveaway detail is the widened B-pillar of a Q5 body shell to extend the car and its wheelbase too.

The Q6 will be an SUV Coupe similar to and in competition with the BMW X6. It will be based on an extended version of the Q5 platform (the MLP or Modular Longitudinal Platform) and slotted between the Q5 and the Q7 in the Audi SUV lineup.

Fight!? From BMW's side I say BRING IT ON!:chair6fm:

BMW's expertise in the performance SUV is nothing short of brilliant!

And the X5/X6 M haters that bought Audi's (R8) recently...:D

:worshbmw:

Given the run away success Audi is experiencing with the A7 and A5 the green lights are lit for a Coupe shaped SUV though I wonder if Porsche will get one too.

I absolutely love the X6, but the reason why I love it is because of its design. I just don't see Audi's design making a rival to the X6.

Giving the photos a second thought, what we are looming at could be the next Audi Q7 based on a stretched Q5 architecture.

Audi confirms BMW X6 competitor, X4 decision still pending

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler acknowleged earlier this year that Audi was considering a BMW X6 rival. Now design boss, Walter de' Silva, in an interview with Automotive News Europe at the Bologna motor show, has gone a step further and confirmed that Audi has signed off on the project.
Potentially known as Q6, the SUV-coupe crossover will slot between Audi's Q7 and Q5 models.
BMW has proven the pioneering X6 design with its sloping roof line has been a success, and Audi as well as Mercedes-Benz with their GLC wants in on the action. First launched in 2008, the BMW X6 was already ranked 5th top-selling premium largeSUV in Europe while the BMW X5 held the top spot.
Audi has set its goal to surpass BMW as the top-selling premium brand by 2015.
Meanwhile, a top Volkswagen executive told Automotive News Europe Audi was also considering another smaller SUV, possibly called Q4, to compete with the BMW X4. Confirmed by BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer, the X4 could hit the market in 2014.

Okay, so we have the RR Evoque..now the Q6 is in development. Who's next to follow the X6 bandwagon?

I'd have the Evoque before I'd pick any of the others, it's simply stunning. But back the the Q6, if Audi claimed drop in weight is genuine then it's sporting ability will easily surpass the current X6 and since each SUV has to pass Porsche's approval you can be rest assured they will be good to drive.

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
