Hello guys,

what really courged me to write this, the endless discussion regarding the X6 off roading ability, of course off road can me differrent terrians but I guess sand is one of those and it is a tricky one. Unfortunelty when I did go off roading in my gone-but-not-forgotten X6 I didn't take photos. But here is some old pictures of what we've been doing each and every weekend since the temprature dropped to 20's.

First of all, the contenders: (one missing though - a Nissan Patrol)

At the beginning, all my friends were making fun of the GMC being well known for unreliable histoy plus it is the lowest car in the bunch. The car has issues on-road/off road and it shakes like hell beyond 140KM/h. It was a reciepe for disaster. It had a very soft suspension, engine with a torque curve at the end of the power chart (it starts after 4500 rpm and ends close to 6000 rpms) which is difficult to handle in such situations.

The trip started with 4 members, me and 3 of my frinds. None of us really had experience in off roading and dune bashing. But most of us, did it before either once or twice and we barely remember how we did it.
So we started to learn and experience the sad, of course we had visitors either friends or strangers and they were a welcomed addition to the crew and actually became part of it after few weeks.
First car got stuck, the most capable one ! The landcruiser ! It was fully loaded with Diff locks, low range gearing and high suspension setting. Of course what mattered here the driver, first of all and most important thing, you have to know what kind of sand you are dealing with. If too soft or hard. Being soft most of the time and when its not raining is the default condition, so we had check our tyre pressure. Yes tyre pressure will make you go places without even pulling the AWD lever. Usually 15 PSI would work very well but here you have to be careful going to a petrol station for a tyre fill up since it can be very risky and car can easily spin around. The idea is simple, when deflate the tyres, it becomes wider which means more grip on the sand, the tyre becomes softer like you are travelling on a jelly and it does not dive into soft sand.
At 15 PSI, you litteraly dance on the sand. So low profile tyres are really useless here since the amount of air is limited and amount of rubber between tyre and rim itself is very small.

When the landcruiser got stuck, I was terrified, I know my car is less capable and I thought it was my turn next. But before getting stuck, I lowered my tyre pressure and kept going. The surprising thing, Is that, my GMC was our only rescue vehicle at that day ! the car never got stuck although being low and the torque really kick up late, but it turns out to be very off road friendly, because , all of us who drove it, we drove it carefully with less confident in he car so as if we were challenging it and it worked. The others were too confidenet with their cars and got stuck from the first obstacle.

So when the LC got stuck, we setup our tent, our own mini helipad :D and let up the fire.

And some started having fun :D

So all in all, lesson learned, is that not only the car that matters, its the driver that can take it places our get stuck in the easiest obstcle or sand dune.

So, for such terrian what you really need,
- AWD, with low gear range (Not a must but helpful). 4LO is used if the sand is really soft and you can't gain momentum in 4HI since the gearing is much taller.

- Differential locks: At that day, only 1 car had it and it was useless, because the driver got stuck from the middle of the car and tyres are barely touching the grounding, so a small shovel did the job :D

Tyre profile and pressure: The bigger the rubber, the better. Moreover, the type of tyre it self, some prefer BF Goodrich that can really splash sand with those rough tyre prints.

Some prefer sand tyres which are almost print-less with just straight threads

But personally I prefer the all weather all terrian kind of tyres that look normal with normal prints for onroad/offroad.

- Suspension: Enough ground clearence will help you go places and avoid damaging your front/rear bumper. But the main problem is that you have to know your car capabilities, extremest angles you can clime among other things. A lift kit is always good but that means you are welling to jeopardize the car ride onroad and you need to re enforce your differential, have the engine modded to keep up with the extra weight.

Some accessories you might need:
Heavy duty robs.
Sand channels (small pieces of heavy-duty rubber than can be placed underneath the wheels if sunk in the sand)
Winch: Not a must
Exposed hooks

lol Andreas, I don't smoke pot :D

I have an FJ cruiser for that :D

Thanks BMW Power, thats kind of you. Hope you liked it.

Great post dude.....I just knew the GMC was the vehicle that was going to rescue you. It's always like that, the crappiest car is the one to make it through :D

Karma from me too.

Thanks Klier, actually top gear inspired me :D no this actually happened 2 years ago. The car overheated like s**t and the bonnet was open for most of the time to cool it off. The Side steps stucked million times and I really didn't care to stop. But the rear hydraulics mal functioned last year and they were almost 7K euro to replace, and yeah we DIDn't bother to fix them, we replaced them with normal coil springs for 100 euro :D or even less as I remember :D

The car has now officially retired from being family car, and I Got an FJ cruiser, very amazing car off road, horrible on road. Brake hard and you loose it kind of stuff. But very powerful for towing my RZR Polaris. I have to say this, the car is awefully unreliable, not because it is american, it actually crappy inside, rattles like hell, and after 3 or 4 trips, the car needed heavy maintenance for about 2K euro, the whole car is worth 5K Euro ! So I hated it, excpet for one fact, it was much better loaded than the Japanese and there was a pleasant surprize after 10 or more off roading trips, the car had an air compressor at the back and we didn't know it !!!!!! so it made our life easier at the end of the trip.

This week I will try to take some nice footage for you guys, but hopefully we reach their before sunset since we go after work which finish 3:30 PM and we reach their 5:30 (20 mints before sunset), so really no time for good pictures.

Which Land Cruiser got stuck? The new ones have the Crawl Control and it should've helped when stuck.

How does the Cayenne perofrom out there?

Off roading, beautiful sport:D

As you said for said driving, low range, diff lock, low psi tryes, losts of revs, none of this low revs and lots of tourqe (it will only pull you into the sand).

I'f your going to modify a 4x4, dont start with something with leafsprings (they cant do this..)

:)

The new landcruiser (white one). I admit it was driver's fault.

This is how the cayenne performed :D

This happened 2 months ago (I was in my FJ cruiser) The cayenne owner was follolwing me, of course my car is lighter and more capable, I saw a small cliff and I stopped slowly and backed of, He braked hard and got stuck. Tires were full of air, he insisted on not touching the tyre pressure, so, he was left there for 1 hour. Then we lowered the air pressure of the cayenne, chosen the right AWD setting (4LO with central Dff locked). But he lost the lower engine cover though :D

This is a tricky pic ... notice anything ??????

That's a US spec Cayenne. The GCC spec Cayenne would've done better, no?

I've always wondered if there's a difference between the Euro Cayenne and the GCC ones. I noticed some had a spare tire in the back.

I see someone walking towards a car. Is that you? :D

Hehe Yasser yes that's me carrying bags ... I am not aware of the differences between US spec Vs GCC spec cayennes, but those rear spare wheels are an option available everywhere not just in UAE but rarely someone tick that option.

The cayenne did fine especially it doesn't have low profile tyres and after dropping air pressure it never got stock once. The tricky part is the AWD options where you play with the lever in the middle of the console to get the Diff locked and LO range engeged.

Man! Sayyaaf - that looks fun! Geez it's been a year know since my visit to the UAE and I can remember the hundreds of 4x4's in the Al Ain desert the 18 Jan 09 it rained that day and we flew back to RSA the 19th....memories....

My wife's parents are visiting brother in law coming March for 3 weeks...think I should go with and maybe ask for a 'spin' in the Panny...:D

Great report Sayyaaf. I like your experience on the sand. We cant experience desert driving in Canada. I always waned to do this but I can only have fun on the snow. I did take winter X-drive challenge with BMW few years ago, we had a lot of fun but it's not the same. Thanks again for your report. :usa7uh::t-drive:

Welcome Bartek, but I advise you not to take your expensive BMW for off roading, although it is very capable, but it is very risky too. You can easily break a bumper or get stuck in a bad situation, in UAE, your insurance is not covered while off roading (just like track).
Get a cheap Japanese SUV for that stuff, same or more fun and less guilt :)

My X6 did wonders in that same spot but I ended up replacing the front bumper and air ducts becoz wind has changed the area once and I thought I know the area :D so I ended up jumping 2-3 feets and hitting the ground with the front :D

So, there you were, the famous desert safari spot! Thanks for sharing your experience & do post more pics if you got! :usa7uh:

If I'd ever go off-road in a desert with the vehicle of my choice, it would be the Patrol followed by the Land-Cruiser!

Ateeq: The current king is the FJ cruiser :D All those are granpas now.
