My New Montego Blue 335 Coupe

I echo what has already been said, congratulations and great colour!

Looks very nice, how does it compare to your old 545i and 330i?

What do you think of the engine?
I haven't driven it really hard yet because I'm still in the break in period and have less than 100 miles on it (I'm going to starting taking random trips to build up the miles). However, I driven a different 335 coupe very hard and also a 335 convertible and both put the 545 to shame. The 330 isn't in the same league. It's a very nice car but is really lacking in the torque department compared to the 335. The 335 has very nice sound. Especially when driving the 335 convertible with the top down.

Some other differences between the 335 coupe and the 335 sedan.

The sedan has a more useful trunk. The very side edges of the trunk in the sedan are flat where they are raised in the coupe. Also the sedan has a much bigger hide away compartment under the trunk than the coupe. The sedan has a net on the console side of the front passenger footwell. The coupe doesn't. The sedan is more roomy in the backseat.

Aside from the better performance I mentioned in my previous post, here are some pluses for the coupe. The door pockets in the coupe are better than the sedan. The coupe has some better interior materials than the sedan. I personally think the coupe is better looking than the sedan although I really like the looks of the sedan. I didn't mentioned this earlier but I really like the paddle shifters I have in the coupe. The have a nice solid feel and fire off lighting quick shifts. Once I get beyond the break in period, I'll get a lot more fun out of them.

In both cars I've set up both my phone and my wife's phone to be hands free through the Bluetooth connection. While the address book is automatically copied to the car, in the sedan I had to set up voice dialing for each number. This means I had to set up the voice name and give it a number. In the coupe I can hit the voice activation button and simply say "dial home" and the system will look at the existing address book and find my "home" entry and dial the number after asking me for a confirmation. I didn't have to set up a voice address book. This difference between the two cars may simply be because the coupe has the latest generation iDrive as of March production and the sedan doesn't have iDrive and is a year older.

Some other differences can be traced directly to the iDrive. Like for instance the coupe has a parked car ventilation feature which is missing from the sedan. My old 545 which has the iDrive also had this feature.

Neither the coupe or sedan with or without the iDrive have a way to change the distribution pattern of the heat in the front seats. My 545 could do this.

The navigation system I have in my coupe is the first navigation system I've ever used. That said I really like how it works in the coupe. Before I left the dealership I entered my home address. There are several ways I can get home from the dealership. However, the system picked the exact way I go which is the best of the different ways. In the bottom right of the screen it would indicate how many miles left until I got home and the approximate time I would get home. To the right of the map it also showed nice little graphics that represented how I had to turn to go the direction I needed to go. The nice feminine voice would lower the volume of the radio to break in to tell me which way I needed to go.

Entering my home address was also easier than I expected. Once I put in what state in live in I started to put in what town. As I entered each character it started doing key ahead functions. Meaning that once I had entered the "Jam" part of Jamestown it popped up Jamestown in a list below where I was keying. Then when I started entering in the street it did the same knowing that there were only so many streets that begin with "Win" in Jamestown. Again with the street number it automatically put 3 as the first number since all houses start with a 3 on my street. I probably haven't done this justice but the bottom line is that system was pretty smart in helping me enter in as few a keystrokes as possible to put in my home address.

Once the address was in the system then it gives me a chance to see what dining, entertainment, shopping, and other services are in the area. Obviously this doesn't do me much good at home but I would've like to have this when I was at the beach this past weekend.

A compliant I have about both cars is that the owner's manual won't fit in the glove box. The manuals are under the front passenger seat. The manual fit in the glove box in the 545.

I mentioned previously I have the iPod/USB adapter but the dealership didn't have the iPod specific cable needed to be able to play songs with DRM bought from iTunes. Apparently cars were built and shipped to customers faster than BMWUSA anticipated and didn't have cables ready to give to customers.

Another thing to add. The comfort access in the 2006 sedan has at times been finicky. At least so far, in the coupe it has worked flawlessly.

do you think the car is comfortable to drive and ride, I mean does your back hurt after one hours driving?

My back doesn't hurt after a period of driving. The seats have a lot of adjustments including the side bolsters and lumbar. I have the back that would show such weaknesses in a seat because back in January I had back surgery to cut off the protruding part of a severely ruptured disc in the very bottom of my back. The pain from the pressure on my sciatic nerve was so bad I couldn't walk or stand for more than a couple of minutes at a time.

Good to hear, becuase when MB fans discuss comfort and how much comfort MB has versus bmw they make it sound like bimmers are uncomfortable and you cant feel relaxed while driving a BMW. This shows how wrong they are :D

Nice car man. If I have time I will test drive the 335i and E46 M3 at the end of the week.

Great colour choice to.

You can get that cable at an apple store near by. There should be one pretty close but if not, try best buy.

Dude...I've been saying for the longest time. BMW's are not uncomfortable. I've taken long trips in my e36 and never had backpain or anything. Hell, my current TSX is a lot more uncomfy than my e36. Now this 335 is a whole 2 generations newer so I can definitely believe that this is comfy. :t-cheers:

You talking about this cable:

There a supplied cable with the car but it was a regular usb ipod cable. But from what I've read this cable will only allow non DRM songs to be played and I don't think you can hear them. That's why the cable in the picture above has both the usb connection and mini jack connector. This is the cable I need but I've never seen one like this at Best Buy.

no your right, the one we have in my mom's car is like a half ass version of that. The song display doesnt actually appear on idrive. You connect the head phone jack to a basic audio in jack on the console. So it looks like a headphone set with both sides as jacks. You would have to control the music on the ipod only...But for your integration i guess you need that style up there.

Nice cars! Great color combination

Loved the touch in your signature of " gone but not forgotten..."

BTW: what happened to them?

They were leased cars and I turned them in at the end of the lease and got a new car.

I had a Camry and traded that in to lease the 2001 330i. When that lease was over I got the 545i. When that lease was over I got the 335 coupe. A Honda Pilot was traded in to start a lease on the 2006 330i.

So you went from a Toyota Camry and Honda Pilot to to of the better bimmers :D

Just awesome man, thanks so much for the pics and info!

Well, if you're going to drive 80,000 km a year, a new C-class is a better choice than the 3-series. 3-series is much stiffer and sporty....
