Ford promised us a while back that there would be a new Mustang flavor every year of the current generation's existence. This year's newest version will make its debut next week at the New York auto show-and Ford promises the new Shelby GT500KR will indeed be the "king of the road."
What road they're talking about, we're not sure. But the new KR follows in the tire tracks of the '68 original, which Ford says made more than 400 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. The '08 KR adds 40 horsepower to the formula applied to the Shelby GT500, and featuring a carbon-composite hood covering its supercharged 5.4-liter V-8, it puts out an estimated 540 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.
A six-speed Tremec gearbox is installed along with a Ford Racing short-throw shifter. The suspension's been tweaked, too, with special roll bars, new spring rates and strut tower braces.
Other touches include Shelby striping, 20-inch polished wheels (18-inchers will appear on the production version), new mirror caps and a Shelby-unique VIN tag. Inside, the KR's interior gets embroidered Shelby signatures on its leather seats and a special KR dash plate.
A thousand copies of the KR will be built, and will go on sale next spring.

My opinion? Ford got it totally right. The lettering on the hood, the lettering ACROSS the rear decklid... I want one in white with blue stripes!
