Mercedes S-class versus BMW 7 or ..... 5 ?

In terms of absolute quality and solidity, I also reckon there's nothing between the two. Whilst the S-Class has outwardly appealing interior trimmings and surfacing, I personally don't feel that it has any more of an impression of unimpeachable build quality than the 7er.
Usually time will tell: how does it look after 200.000 kilometers inside/outside. Concerning build quality I tend to agree, there's little 'till zero difference between them.
The only grasp I have with the G11 is my quality perception of the used leather. Personally I think the Dakota leather isn't of the best quality. Even the used nappa leather has some flaws imo (even in a brandnew 7er it wrinkles in a strange way). The Individual Merano leather is probably of better quality, I haven't seen one yet with Merano leather. Maybe @Busty or @EnI can shed some light on this matter.

Once you drive an S-class, you don't wanna drive anything else.

But I understand, you want change. I say take a discounted 7er, avoid first model year 5er, and then come back for a discounted S-class in a few years.

Stick with the S-Klasse one way - either keep or go to FL - or another. I have the feeling it's more you, Mick.
Whilst I absolutely love the new 7er, I feel that it lacks the outright gravitas and sense of occasion of an S-Class. Instead, the less stately 7er seems to portray a less elegant yet more dynamic persona. In terms of absolute quality and solidity, I also reckon there's nothing between the two. Whilst the S-Class has outwardly appealing interior trimmings and surfacing, I personally don't feel that it has any more of an impression of unimpeachable build quality than the 7er. Said, another way, the S-Class simply exudes more feel-good factor on the inside without necessarily being screwed together any better. Others may disagree...

Agreed. I believe the pick out of the 7 and S is still the S. The facelift will only cement that position. And if you are used to the absolute refinement and comfort of an S-class, an E-class or 5-series is not going to deliver that no matter how highly specced they are in terms of bells and whistles. At the end of the day the full size segment is engineered to a higher standard when it comes to aspects such as NVH, ride quality and isolation etc. Undoubtedly they even get special attention when it comes to seat comfort, climate control operation and so on. Base models of the E and 5 start well south of the base models of the S and 7. And no matter how much they dress the higher end variants such as the E400's and 540's up, the fundamental engineering is still the same as an E200 or 520i.

Why not just wait for the facelift S-Class and then decide? It'll be unveiled in early May according to reports.

Just get the 5 series so you can explain to your fellow MB mates how good it really is

Interesting that you would consider a 5er when talking about a S and 7er ,do you think this car are closer to each other than the E class is ?

In all honesty I'd go for the Face-lift S class it's still the one to get in its class.

See what I did there Mercedes Benz fan I admitted that a Benz is better than a BMW, learn from this.:D

Some of them will be willing to learn, but before you try maybe perfect your skills first on some of the blinded BMW fellas. :p

Mick don't risk, take S class fl. :)
Agree with @fortuner. He said all in one sentence.
"Hey Mick my view and personell off course is that going from a S to any of the other car you will find a downgrade."
:wave4:

Though such cars are not known for their resale value , the S Class resales value is not horrible like the 7 series in Singapore.

I do think 7er and 5er are rather close to each other. It's like this: I'm considering S-klasse or 7er. When I'm thinking about 7er the 5er automatically comes to my mind. When I'm thinking S-klasse the E-klasse doesn't automatically comes to my mind. That's not because I think S, 7er and 5er are closer to each other than both mentioned and an E-klasse. It's because the S-klasse is at least half a class above the 7er, therefore the E is much more away from the S than the 5er is from the 7er. E and 5er for me and the purpose I would use them for, are more or less equal cars. I'd probably even take the E over the 5 because of my constant Autobahn/highway driving.
PS I'm not a, as you call it, a Mercedes-Benz fan. I just happen to like fine automobile. If they are wearing a star or a white-blue badge, I don't care.

If I read this I think u know of you move from a S it's a bit of a downgrade...also remember maybe if you were to buy a 7 now the deal may sound good but when you sell it you going to take a bigger loss..I remember when I went to test drive the 7 end last year the sales person also hinted that 7 looses much more and much quicker value I'm uk to a compared S class so I guess you save now but you loose later..plus it's a step down..I still think once you see the new face lift you will be able to make a clearer decision.

You can buy one of these rather @Mick Briesgau, the most versatile and practical S-class of all time and it points to the future of all latest Merc models! The first car in the world with a 3D glass hatch and mulitifunction steering wheel!
