GT Mercedes quietly announces AMG GT-Convertible and GT- Coupe(4door)

The Mercedes-AMG GT is a series of 2-door sports cars produced by Mercedes-AMG. While not directly replacing the SLS AMG (competing in a different segment), it is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG.

Tucked away in Daimler's half-year results document is a roadmap revealing some interesting things.
There was a rumor almost a year ago about a possible GLA Coupe due in 2019 based on the next generation of Mercedes’ smallest crossover. It turns out the gossip was partially true since the model is actually coming, but a lot sooner than originally believed. It will be out next year according to a 2017 roadmap published by Daimler this week part of a document talking about the company’s performances in the first half of the year.

The PDF also reveals the Nissan Navara-based pickup truck believed to be called “GLT” is also slated for a 2017 launch when Mercedes will introduce an assortment of new models. These include the Audi A6 allroad-rivaling E-Class All Terrain, along with the E-Class Coupe, E-Class Cabrio, and the facelifted S-Class

In addition, the AMG GT will spawn the already confirmed open-top version which will be called “AMG GT C Roadster.” Interestingly, there’s also going to be a GT C Coupe, but we don’t know what the “C” stands for. We can tell you, though, Mercedes-AMG is planning more derivatives of the GT, so this “C” model is one of them and according to the adjacent roadmap will be offered in both coupe and cabrio flavors.

As far as Smart is concerned, 2017 will see the introduction of the electrified Cabrio and ForFour, joining the ForTwo Coupe EV due to see the light of day later this year.

Given the time frame that would be the mid life refresh to the AMG GT having been introduced in Summer 2014?

Maybe the "C" stands for "Comfort"? That would make sense as the cabriolet would be less hardcore than the GT-S or GT-R.

Unlikely. The GT is only in its 2nd model year and MB usually redesigns cars every 7 years (the SL being the sole exception to this rule). A mid-cycle refresh for the GT is still a good two years away assuming it adheres to the traditional 7 year cycle..

What is likely happening here is what has been said by AMG before - that there will be a new edition/version of the GT every year of its life cycle. It started with the GT S for the 1st year, the GT was recently introduced for this year, the GT R will arrive next year, and I suppose the GT C will be revealed later next year for an introduction to market in CY2018.

This is approaching its second birthday. So refresh or updated engine or maybe electric?

Yeah, I noticed that too.

If true, that means there won't be a CLS based on the E and that would explain the lack of next gen CLS spy shots.

So the GT C could be both the 4-door and a roadster with a slightly different look from the GT, GT S and GT R?

I would think the next CLS type car would be the CLE?

The roadster might come in 3 versions: AMG GT roadster, AMG GT S roadster, AMG GT C roadster? :)

Moers said there would be “a different variant” of the roadster, additional to the standard and S versions. This car is believed to be a high performance model using the 570bhp powertrain from the GT R, but tuned more for fast road use than track work. Source: Autocar

The "C" is not for convertible, writes Motortrend. :)

Mercedes-AMG GT C IS A NEW MODEL SLOTTING BETWEEN GT S AND GT R

GT C will be offered as both convertible and coupe

A recently leaked document has revealed Mercedes-Benz’ product plans for the next two years. Some outlets have made their own interpretations of the product chart, but based on our intel, their guesses regarding at least one model are wrong.

The bulk of the confusion surrounds the GT lineup, which as the chart reveals will gain both a GT C convertible and a GT C coupe in 2017. Contrary to reports you might have read elsewhere, the AMG GT C is a new addition to AMG’s growing sports car range. Reports that the C nomenclature simply means a convertible version of the GT S are incorrect. “C is not for convertible,” says a Daimler source, who confirms a topless version of the AMG GT S is also in the works, and that in terms of price and performance, the AMG GT C will sit between the GT S and the hardcore GT R models.

With that being said, the AMG GT C will come in both coupe and convertible variants, and will feature unique bodywork and mechanical specification. It’s unknown when the GT C will debut, but it could make its first appearance at the Paris auto show in September.

Mercedes recently renamed half their lineup to be easier to understand and since then I have the feeling their doing the contrary between the AMG sport models and the GT. The GT "S" version should have been GT 63 I think while the base version might have been GT 55.
