SLR Mercedes McLaren SLR Roadster 722 Edition (Spy pics & info)

The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren (C199 / R199 / Z199) is a grand tourer jointly developed by Mercedes-Benz and McLaren Automotive and sold from 2003 to 2010. When the car was developed, Mercedes-Benz owned 40 percent of the McLaren Group and the car was produced in conjunction between the two companies. The "SLR" name is an abbreviation for "Sport Leicht Rennsport" (Sport Light Racing), and was a homage to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR which served as the car's inspiration. The car was offered in coupé, roadster and speedster bodystyles, with the latter being a limited edition model.

As SLR production comes to an end in 2009, it appears Mercedes McLaren are scrambling to compensate poor sales with yet another SLR variant in the form of a 722 Edition Roadster. Joining the already long list of variants which include the 650hp / 478kW SLR 722 Edition, SLR 722 GT, SLR Roadster and the final SLR Speedster currently in development, the 722 Roadster seems like a desperate attempt.
In these spy photos, which appear to be taken outside of an AMG facility, judging by all of the Mercedes-AMG models littering the street, we can see an SLR Roadster carrying all of the visual cues distinctive of the SLR 722 Edition. They include palladium grey 19-inch forged-aluminium wheels, clear coat painted carbon fiber front lip spoiler, red brake calipers and the large brake discs. Also the black-painted air outlets on the bonnet, not to mention the palladium grey-trimmed taillight clusters.

Wow. I never saw this one coming. Mercedes are really pushing it too far with all of these SLR editions.

Never liked the rims on the 722 edition.

UHHH. Give it a rest Mercedes. All you are doing is diluting the SLRs that are already out there. Think of the poor saps who paid Full $ticker or more, only to see MB whore out the SLR, trying to scrape every penny they can out of a dead project.

He posted a link to the article at the end.

You find me a forum where everything posted is original. The whole point is for members to share news they find so it can be discussed.

If it was up to me I would love to see a new SLR and not stop production in 2009 but than again what would be the point.

Mercedes isn't milking anyone - are people forced to buy it? No they are not if they don't like it they can move on.

I love it that they offer so many variants for the SLR - I liked the first production SLR but when I saw that there is no cabrio like the Vision SLR I was somehow sad.

No we have it and the cycle is completing.

I was on route home yesterday and SLR passed me by on the highway - what a sight to see - the car is just a monument to modern engineering and people who say they are milking with zillion versions are just ignorant to the fact that something similar happend to the previous SLR - so why not now?

It was really fun to see all those poor bastards (including me) in their Audis and BMWs trying to chase it on the highway to get another glance of it before it dissapeared into the distance.

Looks fabulous. But I never understood why they bothered to release the SLR Roadster in standard trim. The 722 is so much better that it was extremely obvious the Roadster would get its 722 edition too...

They should've released the Roadster as 722 from the beginning.
Many versions of the SLR are no problem, only makes each of them more exclusive.

And someone really angry will have no problem to make a 722 out of his standard... Or even make it a Brabus to moke the 722s...

Mercedes-McLaren SLR Roadster ‘722 Edition’ expected to make Paris Motor Show debut

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that its longstanding partnership with British sports car manufacturer McLaren to build the SLR supercar will come to an end next year, and to mark the occasion the companies are planning to release a special edition ‘Speedster’ model. However, the Speedster isn’t the only new SLR variant in the works as this October’s Paris Motor Show is expected to see the launch of a new 722 Edition based on the current SLR Roadster (pictured).

The 722 Edition based on the hardtop was first revealed at the last Paris Motor Show back in 2006 and was only built in a limited run of 150 cars. Not to be confused with the power output of the car, which stands at 650hp (478kW), the odd ‘722’ labelling came from a race in 1955 in which Stirling Moss competed in a Mercedes Benz 300 SLR. The start time for the race was exactly 7.22am.

In addition to more power, the 722 Edition also sees the SLR undergo an extensive weight saving program, as well as receive bigger brakes and a more aerodynamic bodykit. Like the hardtop, Mercedes and McLaren plan to build only 150 units of the 722 Roadster all up, reports AutoTelegraaf.

Meanwhile, the final variant of the SLR, the upcoming Speedster, is expected to make its world debut at next year’s Detroit Auto Show.

Not so sure about the Speedster debuting here since it can't be sold here. Unless Mercedes tries to certify it as track-only car.

Although the SLR has not exactly been a runaway success, I think it is destined to become a classic -- it is a car that has grown on me over time ...and the Roadster is quite unique and special in the supercar world.

I hope they would just forget the SLR and move on. The SLR never quite convinced with its abilities, nor was it able to reach the sales targets.

The SLC will hopefully help us forget the SLR. We've only seen spypics but I already(!) like it a lot more. :usa7uh:

It is the classic. The car sports one of the most successful designs we've seen this decades.

Succesful by what measures? :eusa_thin Are you referring to the MP4-13/14? Then I agree. :D

Re: Mercedes-McLaren SLR Roadster ‘722 Edition’ expected to make Paris Motor Show deb

The jury is still out on whether or not it has or will meet the sales goals. When the press was saying that it hadn't met the sales goals they were basically saying that at the rate it was selling it wouldn't meet the 3500 units over 7-years goal issued back when the SLR was introduced.

Sales have picked up (at least in the U.S.) since the roadster and I bet that the Speedster and 722 Roadster will get them real close to the original 3500 unit goal.

Remember the SLR is/was a 7-year Mercedes like any regular Mercedes, dumb amount of years to be able to expect to sell a supercar, but there it is.
