In a move that would most certainly get a high-five from Admiral General Hafez Aladeen (from Sacha Baron Cohen's film The Dictator), Mercedes-Benz and its high-performance AMG sub-brand are greeting stars and guests to this year’s Cannes International Film Festival from 16 to 27 May 2012, with a fleet of gold-wrapped vehicles.
The German luxury automaker said it is providing the fleet of shuttle limos and SUVs in gold as a fitting tribute to the awarding of the 65th Palme d'Or (Golden Palm).
In addition to the glistening fleet service, Mercedes-Benz's AMG division is offering daily test drives throughout the festival, allowing visitors to try out the brand's various current AMG models along the French Riviera.

My eyes........and I thought the fleet of gold plated SUV used in the movie "The dictator" was bad.

Honestly though... this is Cannes... the people there already know all about Mercedes, and they definitely already know all about uber-luxury brands, automobiles included. Who exactly is MB trying to appeal to...and what sort of message are they attempting to convey?

I guess this would be the only way a Mercedes could stand out in the sea of Bentley's, RR's, Ferrari's, Lamborghini's and Maserati's.

Since the actual topic of this thread is rather... dull... I thought I might ask another question. Have a look at this photo, specifically the license plate.

The license plate is noticeably bent to contour with the AMG bumper design. What happens if you order a new/customized license plate? Not sure how it's done in different countries, but in Australia you just get the plates in their normal shape (ie: flat). I imagine the CLS wouldn't look all that good with a flat license plate on the front... kind of look like whiskers or a small Charlie Chaplin mustache. :D

^ Just have the dealer install it properly, or - like me - take the front plate off.

Mercedes might have inadvertently revealed its up and coming gold edition for the Chinese market.

I think the dealer bends the plate when they install it, those CLS at my dealers have bent front plates.

Ah... now that makes more sense. So this will be the exclusive Mercedes Cannetonese Gold Line. ;)

Interesting that for a luxury sort of event, all the cars have the AMG Sports Package fitted (bar the Pullman of course).

Well yeah that makes sense. :)

W166 M-Class or GL SWB :

Looks to be the M-Class. The up-swept C-pillar gives it away.

I guess once their duties are done at Cannes, they'll be sold as special Cannes Edition models to the Middle East.. going, going.... gone.
