"This makes sense, as AMG sold more than 3,000 G63s in 2014."

Wow!!!!! So what was the total number of G's were sold in 2014?

^ Yes, pretty amazing. In 2014 the G reached a new record, up about 10%, to an estimated 15000 or so. Still quite exclusive. :)

I am not the biggest SUV fan, but I see the definite appeal in the G-wagen, like I see the appeal in a Land Cruiser or a 4Runner. If you want something reliable that can go anywhere and can stand a beating, those three are the way to go. The G's butch boxiness is a big middle finger to anything svelte and stylised. I do hate the fact that a car like this has been appropriated by bling crowd. And an AMG petrol version of this car makes very little sense to me, whereas a torquey diesel that has decent get-up and go with long-range in mind makes more sense to me. Also this car is decidedly more mechanical versus the new crops of Land Rovers/Range Rovers, which are more computerized and automated.

If I had a buttload of money and even with the upcoming Rolls-Royce and Bentley SUVs, I'd still pick this. In fact, for giggles, here's a list of SUVs...

1) G-wagen with a diesel engine
2) (tie) Land Cruiser...with a diesel
2) (tie) Toyota 4Runner...ideally, with...you guessed it...a diesel
3) Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel...
4) Porsche Cayenne
5) Range Rover Sport

Realistically, though, a Mazda CX-5 is all I would need 99.999% of the time.

Ya rs271, it is the same. When I posted the link was working, now I guess the video is removed. Thank you for sharing anyways.

Der Spiegel posted a photo of the new engine. It's the M 176 DE 40 AL with 422 hp and 610 Nm, and probably built by AMG like the M 177 from the C 63 and the M 178 from the GT. :)

Mercedes-Benz G500 4x4² priced from €226,100 - photos
Rides on 22-inch wheels
Mercedes-Benz has announced the G500 4x4² carries a starting price of €226,100 in Germany.

Originally unveiled as a concept back in March at the Geneva Motor Show, the G500 4x4² is now a production model featuring an adapted permanent AWD system with portal axles sourced from the insane G63 6x6 which isn't mentioned in the price list anymore so most likely the six-wheeled €456,900 G-Class has been phased out.

Its four-wheel sibling is powered by a Euro 6-compliant bi-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine developing 422 PS (310 kW) and a massive 610 Nm (450 lb-ft). All that power is channeled to a set of large 22-inch alloy wheels wrapped around in 325/55 R22 tires and Mercedes-Benz says the G500 4x4² with its off-road reduction in the transfer case and three lockable differentials allow the model to start its off-road adventure "where other vehicles give up."

Aside from adding the G500 4x4² and possibly axing the G63 6x6, Mercedes-Benz has updated the other G-Class models by boosting output of the G350d (priced at €89,922) to 245 PS & 600 Nm while the G63 AMG (€143,216) now has 571 PS & 760 Nm and is followed by the range-topping G65 AMG (€271,915) which churns 612 PS & 1,000 Nm. There's also a regular G500 (€105,035) version with the same engine as the 4x4² derivative, but without the jacked up suspension and the other related upgrades.

Mercedes-Benz says the revised G-Class models will hit showrooms in September.
