G-Class Mercedes G class crash safety?

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.

What do you think, is G class safe car?

Since G class is old (produced from '79, designed in '70s), how does it behave in crash? Does it have crumple zones (probably not)? Did they had safety on their mind when car was designed? Do newer models (W463 - '90s, '00s, 2013.) differ to old models (W460 '79) in terms of safety and rigidity?

I have came across to these photos, if somebody has information about them, please write.

Btw. why some cars are not tested on EuroNcap or IIHS/NHTSA? Ok, I understand for Ferrari/Lamgorhini and exotic cars like that, but what is with S class, 7er, A8, G class etc?

These are some disturbing G-class accidents, but maybe some newer cars would have behaved worst, who knows?

The G has always been a very safe and sturdy SUV in regards to head-on and rear end collisions. However, most of the fatal G-Wagen crashes over the years have occurred when they rollover. All the safety tech the world at present will not help a high center of gravity SUV from rolling over at speed. Then again the G wasn't originally designed for speed.

Moral of the story if you drive a G make sure it's not in Russia or the Middle East.

Seeing as it is still a military vehicle under the skin (chassis etc) I'd think it is stronger than most vehicles in a head on crash. Rollover would be my assumed weaker point due to a lot more eight being in the chassis. I know of someone who survived a head on collision with a truck while driving his G and I've seen a few up close from head on and it is very strong. The real question is how well the energy of the crash is displaced so as to minimise what goes through the occupants body.

So, can you roll a G-Class at <15mph...?

.. or is the irritating talentless English radio "DJ" full of it?

Some people know how to prevent a rollover.

I believe the technique is called "edging."

Yet Volvo managed it with the original XC90 and with the new one, look at the rollover test video, where the XC90 barrel rolls several times, it's didn't crush it, I doubt a G would survive this.

You can't cheat physics, so despite being equipped with electronic stability control the G still is very prone to rollover because of its high centre of gravity.

However, I assume that Mercedes must have strengthened the structure over the years and made the G tougher and safer in a crash, but I could be wrong about that, though.
