X-Class Mercedes-Benz X-Class Pickup Concept

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class (W470) is a pickup truck that was sold by Mercedes-Benz. Unveiled at a world premiere in Cape Town, South Africa in July 2017, the pickup took its chassis from the Nissan Navara and employed many Mercedes-specific features and technologies, including some engines not shared with the Navara. It first went on sale in late 2017. Production of the X-Class was halted in May 2020 due to slow sales.
Mercedes pickup won't be coming to U.S. -- for now, Exler says
LOS ANGELES -- Mercedes-Benz won’t bring its new pickup to the U.S. market in 2017, Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dietmar Exler said Tuesday. But Exler didn’t rule out becoming a pickup seller down the road. Source: Automotive News

You better believe that if this is a hit, MB will either go on their own next time (not likely but possible) or work with Nissan from the start on the next generation so they can spin off a true Mercedes-Benz from it, instead of this mild rebadge/warmover.

M

I wouldn't call this a mild rebadge, it's pretty extensive, I think only the windows appear to be carry over itesm, all the other body panels are different and even the shut lines are different, the interior is all Mercedes; in my opinion it's about as different as say the Golf VII is to the A3.

A3 = Golf
MB pickup = Nissan pickup.

New badge, different color lipstick.
You're easily fooled. Keep talking about relics from the past please, your area of expertise!

From Mercedes, a premium pickup

X-Class to launch in late 2017.

The world’s first premium pickup, the X-Class, will be a true Mercedes, from the hallmark brand design and comfort to the driving dynamics and safety. The top-of-the-line model will be powered by a V6 diesel in combination with 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive system will combine an electronic traction system, a transfer case with reduction gear, and two differential locks. It will be launched in late 2017 under the name Mercedes-Benz X-Class. The key markets will be Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Australia with New Zealand, and Europe.

Mercedes Has A New Reason NOT To Sell The X-Class In The US

Americans love trucks, just sell it here please!

Sometimes we don't understand the choices that car companies make when deciding whether to sell a model in the US. There are many models that we don't get in the US, particularly from the wagon and small pickup truck sectors, and now Mercedes-Benz has another model that won't come stateside. Even though Mercedes will sell its new X-Class pickup truck in Canada, it won't sell it in the pickup truck-obsessed US market. In an interview with Autoblog, Mercedes tried to claim that its X-Class just wasn't big enough to be a success in America.

Mercedes' previous excuse was that the X-Class would not come to the US until the next-generation because it would be hard to sell an unproven model in the US. Now Daimler chief executive Dieter Zetsche says that "In the US, aligning the premium to the midsize is kind of a contradiction because a premium truck is a fullsize truck, therefore we do not see the US market as a relevant market or a suitable market for that truck." Basically, what Zetsche is saying is that Americans will only buy a premium pickup truck if it is fullsized like an F-150, Ram 1500 or Silverado. "If there were opportunity for this product in the US, of course we would go for it," said Zetsche.

Unfortunately Zetsche, who formerly led Daimler-Chrysler's Chrysler division, claims that "Our research so far tells us [the market is] not there." Obviously Mercedes has done its research, but we simply cannot understand how this truck would not do well in the US. There must be people out there who want a luxury truck with a premium badge. Fullsize trucks like the F-150 are quite cumbersome in some situations, so why wouldn't a smaller truck be a good option? Mercedes could have this segment completely to itself, unless Audi decides to follow through with its pickup truck. We really hope Mercedes changes its mind on this one.

I'm glad this won't make it stateside. Americans are very finicky about brand perception and if this is going to damage that any further than it's best they don't even try.

Australian dealers are also taking reservations. :)
Mercedes-Benz Vans corporate communications manager, Blake Vincent, has told TMR that Australian dealers have already started taking registrations of interest with an official registration program similar to that of the UK under consideration.

Mr Vincent described that level of interest in the X-Class as significant, with a growing number of enquiries for Mercedes-Benz first ever dual-cab ute.

The truck doesn't wear too much camouflage, especially at the front. The nose takes strong cues from the previous concept.
While its still somewhat strange to think of the normally luxury-oriented Mercedes-Benz building a utilitarian pickup, a new gallery of spy photos shows that the X-Class project continues to develop the truck for the road. The latest pics even give us a better look at the production version’s design.

Mercedes’ camouflage largely exposes the X-Class’ grille. A pair of slats cut through it, and we suspect the cover in the center hides the brand’s star emblem. Slanted headlights give the truck a sporty appearance. Both of these design cues are also the company’s concept for the pickup.

In profile you can see the steeply raking windshield that makes the truck look more stylish than other entries in the segment. A slight slant for the cabin’s rear pillar also keeps the pickup from appearing too boxy. At least at this point, the concept’s bumper-integrated exhausts don’t appear to be on the production model.

The X-Class uses the same underpinnings as the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan. However, Mercedes is indicating the pickup would use the company’s own powertrains. One of the concepts had a turbodiesel V6 and boasted off-road capability from 4Matic all-wheel drive, an low-range transfer case, and differential locks for both axles. The truck had a maximum payload of 2,430 pounds (1.1 metric tons) in the bed and was able to tow up to 7,720 pounds (3.5 metric tons).
Mercedes won’t actually be building the X-Class. Instead, Nissan will build them in Barcelona, Spain for the European, Australian, and South African markets. Renault will also assemble them in Cordoba, Argentina, for Latin America. Production will reportedly get underway in 2018, so we’ll likely see the truck at an auto show sometime later this year. Dealers in the United Kingdom are already taking reservations from buyers.

Mercedes is abundantly clear that there is no current plan to bring the X-Class to the United States. The region’s pickup truck market is too competitive, and upcoming midsize entries like the Ford Ranger, which would compete against the Mercedes, mean that situation isn’t changing.

An AMG-tuned version of the truck also isn’t in the product plan, either.

Let the MB development team take this into consideration.

Nissan urged to recall Navara pickup due to chassis cracks

Up to 35,000 Navaras believed to be affected in the United Kingdom.
Owners of the second generation Nissan Navara, launched with D40 factory index in 2004 and as the Nissan Frontier on some markets, are making cooperative efforts to urge the Japanese manufacturer to recall the pickup. The reason – many examples of the vehicle, sold in the United Kingdom, suffer from severe rust which can cause cracks in the chassis and even splits in the construction, as The Sun reports.

The magazine tells the story of a 50-year-old Navara owner, who was towing a caravan with his truck driving with his pregnant wife inside to Scotland when the vehicle snapped. Richy Holmes is one of nearly 16,000 users who have joined the “Nissan Navara snapped chassis” Facebook group in the last about a year.

“I was only going a few miles an hour — I dread to think what could’ve happened if I’d been going faster,” Richy Holmes from Sunderland told The Sun. “It’s an absolute disgrace that these vehicles are still on the roads.”

The Transport Select Committee, a select committee of the House of Commons in the Parliament of the United Kingdom, is having a meeting today, where the issue will be analyzed and further actions will be discussed.

“To reassure the public, Nissan would be well advised to recall all affected vehicles,” committee member Huw Merriman told The Sun. “If, as they say, there are only a small amount impacted then it shouldn’t be a costly exercise in ensuring that these vehicles really are safe to be on the road.”

Back in 2013, Nissan issued a recall for the Spanish-built Navaras sold in Australia because of towbar problems, but the recall is unrelated to the rust problem. The Japanese company hasn’t issued any related recalls for the pickup in Europe so far – and some owners accuse the brand of keeping the issue “under wraps.”

Attwood Solicitors, a law company, claims nearly 35,000 Navaras are affected in the UK and some 193,500 worldwide.

I hope there won't be another Citan crash test fail with this truck.

I'm bit surprised they didn't use the G Class as a basis for this car (either W463 or W464) - they make so many variations of it, surely a pickup would be possible?

Probably productions costs are high.

My brother has put his name down for one of these to replace his Amarok. But I am very worried it's going to be found out for what it is, a tarted up Navara. Mercedes better approach this development thoroughly and not as some half assed reskin just to earn another dollar.

^ Maybe he can drive a Nissan pickup to get some feel for it? And one shouldn't expect a MB passenger car interior, but some "rough luxury" from the van division. The rear axle may not be too smooth over bumps either, since it may be built for a high payload and offroading. :)

“We call it rough luxury,” said Kai Sieber, director of design, brands & operations at Mercedes-Benz Vans.

The cab sports two rows of seats, easily fitting a family of four or a builder’s crew, and will contain many of the same interior components and features typical of Mercedes-Benz’s cars and vans. There will be a luxury version with leather interior and chrome furnishings. And there will be a more robust version with a washable interior for the workhorse. Source: WSJ

Mercedes-Benz Vans is trying to figure out whether there would be enough demand for the posh pickup truck.
It seems there has been a change of heart at Mercedes as the German company is now currently analyzing the prospects of bringing the X-Class stateside. When the tuxedo-wearing Nissan Navara NP300 made its debut last fall as a concept, there weren’t any plans for a U.S. launch of the production model scheduled to reach other markets late this year. Mercedes-Benz Vans boss, Volker Mornhinweg, said this week in an interview with Reuters that demand for midsize pickup trucks is on a rise in the U.S., which is why the X-Class still has a shot of landing stateside:

“In the past year the mid-sized truck market has come back a bit. General Motors is launching a mid-sized truck. We are watching developments very closely, and we will take a decision at the appropriate time.”

Not only that, but if green-lighted for the U.S., the X-Class might actually be assembled locally at a new factory. Mornhinweg went on to specify production capacity at Renault’s plant in Cordoba, Argentina where the X-Class will be made probably won’t be big enough to cater the U.S. market. A decision regarding a new manufacturing facility is still pending.
While the factory in Argentina will satisfy the demand coming from Latin America, the X-Class will also be made in Barcelona, Spain at Nissan’s plant. This is where production will actually kick off first towards the end of 2017, with Renault to begin assembly in Cordoba later in 2018.
The X-Class will be revealed in full production guise in the months to come and will feature a turbodiesel V6 engine hooked up to a 4Matic all-wheel-drive layout. It’s going to have a payload capacity in excess of 1.1 tons (2,430 pounds) and will be able to tow up to 3.5 tons (7,720 lbs). The “Mercedes among pickups” will be available “at an attractive price” and will receive an AMG styling pack, but not a full-blown performance version tweaked by the talented engineers from Affalterbach.
