Mercedes needs to go back to being engineer driven and back to what made them great. I see glimpses of it in the next S-Class and even in the new SL and especially the GL. A no excuses vehicle. Just tidy up the design, but I think they really need to have a more identifiable environmental strategy as others have stated. If BMW's i project takes off, Mercedes will be so far behind. They also need to get back being a true innovator, and do it reliably. The S-Class will see if they're back on their game in this regard. I just want to see so many things from Mercedes and I think a lot of their traditionalist want to also, along with the greedy shareholders.
Why not do one truly retro model? Like a modern version of the 190E or 300E, just to create a serious, one-off hit?
I'd like to see the G redesigned, Range Rover style, on its own ultra-modern, all aluminum platform. Stronger than before, and unheard of luxury in an SUV, price it higher than the current G550, which is like over 100K already, it will sell if done right.
Smart needs to be totally re-thought. Mini and now Fiat have proven that Americans will buy small, but boutique cars and in the case of Mini, they'll buy them at a premium. The next Generation of Smarts need to be, have to be winners.
I don't know how they can create the magic of the 600/Pullman at the other end, that is going to be a tough one.
A true sports car should be in there also, under 3000lbs with a V8 to take on Ferrari/Porsche/Mclaren. Throw out the typical Mercedes rulebook about weight and amenities.
