S-Class W116 Mercedes Benz W116

The Mercedes-Benz W116 is a series of flagship luxury sedans produced from September 1972 until 1980. The W116 automobiles were the first Mercedes-Benz models to be officially called S-Class, although some earlier sedan models had already been designated unofficially with the letter S for "special class" (German: "Sonderklasse"). The W116 was selected as European Car of the Year in 1974.

Superb car this one, one of the most memorable cars in my life for sure. We had a 1975 W116 350SE A/T in our family from 1983 to 1993 and it was a car that had such admiration from everybody that we knew. The main feature that made this car standout at the time was its wonderful 3.5ltr V8 engine where most rival cars such as the BMW 7 series and Jaguar XJ still had 6 cylinder engines. The music made by this engine was fantastic, lovely burbly V8 sound. Also the cars styling was so majestic, it had alot of grace and was very elegant especially when viewed from the side. The interior was built like a bank vault, so solid with outstanding feeling materials that were so classy and lasted for years. And then the comfort from the soft bouncy seats and the nice suspension made this car a great long distance cruiser, in fact in made more than 5 trips from Johannesburg to Cape Town (1400km) every year in December. It also had wind in the hair feeling with the electric sunroof as well as AC kept the car cool in hot summers. It was mega spacious with a massive boot. One car that brings back lots of good memories in my life. One day i would love to own one again.
