Many talks about that in the german forum Motortalk.de since the launch of the OM651.

I remember that an insider on Motortalk.de said, few months before the official launch of the OM651, that they were having troubles with it and that it should've been delayed...

This is not good. Not good at all.:t-banghea

Modern diesels are reliabilitywise absolutely disastrous. After 100.000kms, you can have all sorts of problems depending on the care it was driven with. Dying turbo, problem with the injectors, unable to cope with city-only driving... And modern petrols, with turbo and direct injection, will have the same problems (see the latest BMW petrol engines).

Modern cars are becoming increasingly short-lived. Disposable even, after few years. I don't even know why they bother to test them so long, only to come up with such rubbish results.

OM651 is the new four-cylinder, 200-220-250cdi. However the 200 has a single turbo and magnetic injectors, and has no problems. The 220 and 250 have two turbos and piezoelectric injectors which are often faulty.

This is a failure of Delphi who builds these injectors. The problem is cured now and shouldn't reappear, but many cars are waiting to be repaired.

ITs a pity well atleast its cleared and sorted but not good for MB especilally after how well they been doing recently in regard with relaibility..

On the other hand, they can now correct the problem beginning during the engine production process. They can do whatever they need to do to prevent the injectors from "falling out".

Bad news? Yep, but thankfully this problem was discovered relatively early on. I'm thinking of those 40,000 E-Classes delivered roughly half must be diesels. So it's going to be a relatively "small recall" if 20,000 are recalled for inspections etc. :D

^^ Yeah but MB knew it... And still released the motor... And thus destroyed the reputation of the E-Class once again.

How dumb can they be? What was all the testing phase for?

I'm sure the engineers made some noise - and the management told them to shove it, the release is going ahead...

Yeah, exactly.

This is precisely why my Mercedes is 35 years old. Back then the engineers had the upper hand so the cars were stunningly well build and engineered. Not stunningly shiny while stunningly cheap to produce...

I'd rather have no sleep-beepy-assyst and buzzing-smart-mirrors, but better materials and a bullet-proog engineering, quality and reliability.

Now you have a thousand rediculous electronic useless gizmos, yet the basics are cheaply produced and tend to fail...

Of course this is a minor and corrected issue, but it shows the path of all modern cars, even if today's MBs are generally among the most reliable, they are nowhere near the old ones.

Uh oh.....well let us hold up on getting this motor to the U.S. market. Mercedes can't afford any engine problems like this anywhere, but especially not in the U.S.

Piezoelectric are very good in what they do, but are also easily damaged. They can be destroyed in an accident, hitting them with a hammer or just by clamping off the fuel return lines.
