SL-Class (W198 / W121) Mercedes Benz SL 300 Gullwing

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was a road-going version of the W198 racing car with extensive modifications to the body. The 300 SL in coupé form was introduced in 1954, featuring its trademark gullwing doors. Produced from 1954 to 1963.
It is an icon. :t-cheers:

Ralph's car. I saw it when it was in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, along with 15 other of his "modest" collection.
I have never liked silver on a 300SL nearly as much as red, but I am absolutely amazed by this car. The metalic silver with natural finish leather is :icondrool

A while ago I mentioned that Daimler-Benz built a few aluminium-bodied 300SL Gullwings. This is one of them.

There were 29 aluminium Gullwings built.

Even today this car is unreal... too good to be true... unbelievable...
It ain't just a machine...

If I get the chance to drive it one day I'll cry like a little baby and if they try to get me out of the car... I'll simply drive away.
If you have one don't let me get close to it :D

What a fantastic investment one of these would have been worth. Now if we could just invent a time machine. It's unlikely that any modern car will ever make it to be such a classic.........

Oh god a red 300SL is my dream car. This has always been my favorite car since I was a kid. I can thank my dad for that, he bought me a 1:18 model and I remember going with him to a car museum and seeing a cream colored one. Maybe it was white or off white, I just remember it was a white-ish "alas de gaviota". Of course when I was a kid I didn't knew it was so expensive

Same with the 1:18 model here. Mine was cream colored too :)

About the real car's price: To me it's not too expensive when you compare it to some modern crap. It's worth every penny!

In 1968 my dad bought a 300SL for £250, drove it around the UK for 6 months then couldn't afford to ship it back to NZ when he came home from his overseas experience, it's one of his life's big disappointments. Amazing to think they were so cheap back in the day, people junked them, I wonder how many were lost?

one of the most beautiful cars ever made, achieving 250kph in 1955 made it the veyron of its time and it costed more than a house and had flaws like overheated cabin and a rubbish boot which made it the first modern supercar

Launched at the 1954 New York Auto Show, with bells and whistles that can be still heard when seeing one driving by, the gorgeous Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is arguably the world's first somewhat modern supercar.

This year, the iconic Gullwing will blow the sixtieth candle on its birthday cake, so the peeps in charge of the Goodwood YouTube channel decided to give a present to all 300 SL aficionados out there.

In short, an almost perfect-looking Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W198) in silver with red leather interior was filmed while driving quite briskly on the legendary Goodwood circuit, with the real treat most likely coming from the glorious sound of its fuel injected straight-six.

Originally, the SL in its name stood for “Sport Leight” (Sport Light) and it was rather fitting for a road-going sports car that was actually based on a racing car and which was also the fastest thing on four wheels that you could drive on the street in 1954.

Its inline six-cylinder engine had a capacity of three liters, delivering no less than 215 hp and 274 Nm (202 lb ft) of torque to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox.

The really interesting bit is not just the rather immense power for a sixty-year old car, but the fact that most of that power was achieved thanks to the world's first direct injection system on a road car, with the principle behind the system having been first used on Daimler-powered fighter planes.

With a top speed of around 260 km/h (162 mph), the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was also the fastest production car in the world when it was first unveiled, while its gull-wing doors made it look just as fast even when standing still.
