S-Class (W223) Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) Facelift

Added to Calendar: 01-29-26

The Mercedes-Benz W223 is the seventh generation of the S‑Class full-size luxury sedan, produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2020. It replaces the W222 S‑Class which had been produced since 2013. Body Styles: W223 (standard), V223 (long), Z223 (limousine, Mercedes-Maybach). Production: 2020- Model years: 2021-
I don’t realize that they changed the shape of the tail lights as well. They are more rounded at the bottom. What I can’t unsee is that the shape of the lights look like semaphores from the early 20th century and now I can’t unsee that.

Totally agree with the previous comments, although I definitely prefer the new taillight shape. Looks more organic now. Older ones looked way too sharp, almost resembled a triangle.

So…the M177 EVO, is there info released on it’s peak RPM yet? & What exactly did they do to it’s exhaust manifold since they said they tweaking it to sound like a rumbly 180° V8? Anybody got any idea?🤔
The tachometer in the configurator says about 6500.

I am trying to find a picture of the manifold from the back, because I think there’s one cylinder from each bank which sends the gases to the turbo of the other bank.

Digital tacs, but also, its an S-class. Doesn't need to be a screamer.
Not sure if its the M177 Evo that is going to be the new AMG engine as well, or if they're cooking up an even newer flat-plane V8. Either way, the one used in AMG products will be tuned differently, without a doubt.

Let’s be honest: all these engines are crap. The moment I hear there’s a battery involved, I completely lose interest. These engines will never last 300,000+ km without problems and failures—not to mention how expensive the battery will be (where you’ll end up paying double for refurbishment or repair everything you previously saved on electric range). Then there are the new Brussels directives on CO₂ and, consequently, sound (OPF), which make a V8 sound terrible. The days of beautiful V8 sounds, like those in the W220 (S55 AMG) and specially W221 (6.3 V8 and 6.0 V12) are sadly over....

In a German Mercedes Benz Forum the owner lately sold a C63SE with 130k miles, he drove the car almost all the time full throttle on the German autobahn, apart from a failed battery because of production error at the beginning , nothing has failed.
The M139 is obviously surprisingly reliable.

Crap eh?

You know the S580 is a mild hybrid right? A battery not much bigger than what cars have been using for their starter motors for decades.

CO2 directives are here to stay and won't go away. Whether you like it or not, climate change is real, and has real impacts on the world. So I personally can take losing a little in the way of V8 sound, for that sake, whilst still getting to enjoy the fact that V8s can still exist.

It clearly won’t matter in a W220 as the car will break apart and disintegrate long before that mileage.

I think these have turned me around, I love the silver with the blue, it’s so old school. I think for a facelift this car is completely fine and I’ve definitely come around to the exterior.

What I do not like about Manufaktur trim is that the airbag cap in the steering wheel is black. Why is it not coordinated with the interior color? Moreover, I find it unattractive that, for example, when the seats are chestnut brown, the rear side of the seats is simply black.
I wonder if these are the concessions of having so much choice ? In the past when they had crazy colours like green for example, every part of the interior was green. It must be difficult for supply chain or whatever, but feels very luxurious and special.

That is exactly what I mean. An interior finished entirely in one single color feels far more luxurious and distinctive than the current Manufaktur offering.
Last summer I drove a W116 450 SEL 6.9 with an all green interior and I loved it. W126 and W140 offered it as well, at a much lower price by the way. It just were standard colors.

Having the lower part of the console/dash in black and with black carpets breaks up the monotone-ness, and imo with most colors that simply looks way better.

But clearly this all is just personal preference for both of us, and there's no wrong or right.

It's always sad to see how good the interiors of the old German cars were.

I believe we will get back to some of the best recent interior designs. Audi will probably lead the way there if recent comments by the new head of design are to be believed.

Just go and see the G20 3er interior (pre-LCI). That was the best mordern interior layout IMO.
