S-Class (W223/V223/Z223) Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) Facelift

Added to Calendar: 01-29-26

The Mercedes-Benz W223 is the seventh generation of the S‑Class full-size luxury sedan, produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2020. It replaces the W222 S‑Class which had been produced since 2013. Body Styles: W223 (standard), V223 (long), Z223 (limousine, Mercedes-Maybach). Production: 2020- Model years: 2021-
Like I suspected yesterday the cross plane v8 will have balancing shafts in the s. However the variant in the AMG models will unlikely have the shafts.

Says who? Doesn’t make sense.

Different platforms. Jesmb is being talking about that recently.
Mercedes Electric S-Class arrives at the end of 2028

Mercedes must continue to invest in separate platforms
The ramp-up is not as fast as expected. The tipping point has obviously shifted. Currently, there are delicate recoveries in the fleet business in September. The fleet customers have again received the e-cars much better (even without a premium).

The new 800 volt technology and the longer ranges (at Mercedes with the MMA platform and then EVA2M from EQS Facelift as well as all new platforms VAN.EA, AMG.EA and MB.EA) will also help the electric car to break through outside the early adopters.

A CO2 mobility is only possible with the e-car. The well-to-wheel balance of combustion engines with e-fuels is 10%, that of the e-car is over 70%.

Mercedes EQS change year 2024-1
The successor of the EQS is called S-Class again and comes at the end of 2028
Ola Källenius has now announced that there will be no compromise platforms for future new vehicles. Mercedes will offer vehicles without compromising on space, space efficiency, technology, performance or equipment. Therefore, there are only tailor-made platforms for combustion engines and electric vehicles.

However, the design of the two worlds should be aligned as far as possible. The EQ designation will then be omitted in the future.

For this purpose, the current high-tech combustion engines with hybridization will be further developed and adapted to EU7 and China7.

For the Mercedes engineers in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim, the complexity with two parallel worlds (combustion engine and electric) thus persists longer than originally planned.

This is also one of the reasons why you may no longer have to think about SUV coupes in the current time.

The S-Class has tradition: in the future there will be two S-Classes in parallel
As curious as it sounds. For the customers it would be cheaper in total, so one would switch to electric faster. Because the fixed costs of a parallel combustion engine development are distributed over fewer units (since some buy electric cars).

While the body is thus driven in parallel, many system kits will be used (e.g. for seats, infotainment, MBUX, security systems & assistance systems).

At the end of 2028, the new electric S-Class, i.e. EQS successor, will start. Whether it will stay here with MB.EA-L and EDU3.0 or whether more EVA2M technology with eATS2.0-Large is being tried to be integrated into the new electric S-Class due to cost pressure is unknown.

But since Mercedes did not expect the delayed ramp-up of electric mobility, the final go for a new combustion engine S-Class has only recently fallen and therefore the new combustion engine S-Class will only come new later (2029/2030).

But before that, there is the facelift of the S-Class (incl. Maybach) and the electric EQS.

Not sure about this one…. Maybe it will grow on me in person? The interior is exactly what I feared however.

As time passes, I’m more convinced I should just get a clean and meticulously maintained FL W222 S63/65 even a 560 and not worry about the latest and greatest. Peak modern S-Class imo. This is coming from someone who’s owned a W223 for 3 years and different generations and variants since the early W221s came out.

I've considered searching for a mint S63 Coupe, but I think the techi in me will miss all of the 'digital' luxury.

The AMG version might be an entirely new engine code. Who knows at this point.
The M177 Evo was changed to a flat plane I guess for emissions compliance purposes, and then obviously needed the balancing shafts to maintain the smoothness.

I wonder if like the E class, you can de-option the super screen. I think that would probably end up being preferable.

I think in general though, they need a complete reboot foe the next generation of cars. Starting with the W224.

Gorden Wagener has gone, and I think maybe it might be time for Ola to go as well.

I'd at least wait for the next one and see if they were able to wash away Gorden's legacy and bring it back to Sacco-ish stuff again.

The next S class is going to be a pivotal car for the brand, imho
It's got to be as right as the W222 was and the W464 is.

Nothing is lower than the absolute junk that was the W220 upon its introduction. Say what you want about this new design but it isn’t falling apart and breaking down everywhere.

M

Yeah but the design is so badass, sleek and beautiful....

Car interior and exterior design I suppose people can have a reasonable complaint.
On a technical level though, I don't think you'll be able to do much better than this FL, this side of a Rolls Royce.

Mercedes' engineering remains absolutely top notch. But their designers need to be replaced. Particularly the interior.

It really depends what you want the car for, in my experience, if it’s a design you really love, you will be really forgiving for some small inconveniences. Start slowly searching for one that would perfectly match what you want.

The main culprit behind these absurdities is the inconsistent electric vehicle strategies. After the W223, Mercedes considered making the S-Class purely electric. I'm sure they planned a simple facelift in 2024 and a new W224 in 2027. However, the EQS's lack of expected interest and the overall stagnation in the bev market changed their plans. Building a completely new model from scratch would take a long time, so they opted for a comprehensive update to the existing model to extend its lifespan. They had to use the materials they already had for this update. This forced change ruined the S-Class's identity.
