The new V8 (M177M) engine produces 537 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque in the S 580. Previously, it produced 503 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. This increase is further supported by the power of the 48-volt mild hybrid system. The M176 engine in the S 580 is now being discontinued.
The M177M engine features redesigned intake and exhaust ports and utilizes AMG's flat crankshaft. This aims to improve efficiency and responsiveness by altering the firing order.
The M256M engine has also been revised. The S 500 now produces 600 Nm of torque (instead of 560 Nm) and is expected to produce 640 Nm in overdrive mode. The electric auxiliary compressor (to address turbo lag) is now more powerful. Measures have also been taken to further reduce vibrations.
The plug-in hybrid model is also becoming more powerful. The system power will increase from the previous 510 hp (367 + 150 hp) to 585 hp. This means the S 580 e now offers the same power as the SL 63 AMG 4MATIC+. The performance increase is achieved thanks to more power from the M256M engine and a higher output from the electric motor. The electric range remains above 100 km.
The OM656M inline six-cylinder diesel engine remains in the vehicle. To improve emissions, it will be the world's first diesel engine equipped with a heated catalytic converter.
As in previous models, all engines (except the plug-in hybrid model with a 400-volt electric motor) will have a 48-volt electric motor between the engine and the transmission (9G-Tronic).
