S-Class (W223) Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) Facelift 2024

The Mercedes-Benz W223 is the seventh generation of the S‑Class full-size luxury sedan, produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2020. It replaces the W222 S‑Class which had been produced since 2013. Production: 2020- Model years: 2021-
At the bottom rung of the ladder is the S500, which relies on a super- and turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that should produce 442 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque, with an overboost function improving torque to 472 pound-feet for short bursts. Above that is the S580e, a plug-in hybrid that combines the aforementioned straight-six with a beefier electric motor and battery to produce 576 horsepower, 73 more than last year's S580e.

The current king of the non-AMG mountain is the S580, which adopts the latest iteration of Benz's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. Here, it produces 530 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. There are a bunch of changes to what's under the hood, including improvements to the intake and exhaust ports, tweaks to the injection system, and—coolest of all—a freakin' flat-plane crankshaft. This is the model for our brief back-seat ride on the roads surrounding Mercedes's plant in Sindelfingen, Germany.

In the US market selfishly, they need to Batman the S580 and Robin the S500/580e when it comes to launch priorities. Thankfully, a majority of the clientele for S classes are still V8 or nothing. Not that the pre-FL was a slouch at 496 understated Hp, but 530+ is gets you very AMG performance of 10 years IRL without the AMG maintenance costs.

The I6 is an excellent motor, but is more fitting to the rest of the lineup outside the S/G. Even with the I6 G550 now some of the repeat clientele are skipping to the G63 now to get a V8.

Long as they buy a G and they’re buying the more expensive one, I don’t think they mind. The G63 was already the majority of G sales I’d read. They’re printing money with it I’m sure.

The G is already bonkers, therefore the G63 makes the most sense.

It’s understandable.

Regarding the S-class I’ve owned only V8 and V12 engined ones, those are the right engines for this car, I never cared how strong the 6 bangers were.

Huge update for Mercedes S-Class to bring flat-plane crank V8

Oh so is the "new" V8 just a flat-crank variant of the M177? Or is there going to be an new engine code too?
Or is there going to be a separate 4.0L flat plane V8 for more performance applications?

The ultra-luxurious Maybach S580 will follow shortly after, with the same engine cranked to 603bhp to replace the V12 it currently uses, which Mercedes will retire in Europe.
