Mercedes-Benz is paying up for violating federal fuel-efficiency requirements set by the government. The German automaker’s U.S. division cashed out $28.9 million in fines in December for imported passenger cars from the 2007 model year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
NHTSA said that it assessed more than $37 million in fines from a total of 6 automakers in 2008. The fines were established to make sure that automaker produce vehicles that meet basic gas mileage standards.

Volkswagen paid out a total of $4.5 million in August for light-truck violation while Porsche and Maserati each paid $1.2 million. Ferrari North America cashed out a total of $1.1 million.
NHTSA said that the Mercedes-Benz fine was the second-largest ever assessed by the organization for CAFE violations. Who held the previous record? DaimlerChrysler paid $30.3 million in fines in 2007 from the 2006 model years.
On a side note: The Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHYBRID will be launched in the North American market in September 2009.

Oh well, gotta pay to play. Nobody has or sells more 500hp and 600hp cars than Mercedes. Hell every regular "550" car has 382hp and more or less gets them in trouble with the feds when you look at the number of them sold/imported.

Re: Mercedes-Benz pays $28.9 million in fines for violating fuel-efficiency requireme

I wish I could say that some of this money will eventually trickle back to the US government and from there it will trickle down to GM when that 3rd loan installment comes so they can finance their new Equinox SUV!

Am I somehow even right? :D

True they're great engines, but the truth here is that they don't sell anywhere near the amount of high power engines that Mercedes does, which is why they don't get the fines like MB. Has nothing to do with any fabeled BMW engineering rhetoric.

Mercedes fuel fine drops 76%

Mercedes-Benz US division pays $6.8M in fuel efficiency fines

WASHINGTON — The U.S. government says Mercedes-Benz of North America Inc. has paid a $6.8 million fine for failing to comply with federal fuel-efficiency requirements.

Mercedes, a division of Daimler AG, paid the fines for violations dealing with imported passenger cars for the 2008 model year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collected fines from six automakers in 2009 totalling more than $13 million.

Many manufacturers of luxury vehicles consider the fuel efficiency fines as the cost of doing business. The fines were created to ensure vehicles meet basic gas mileage standards. Mercedes paid a $28.9 million fine last year.

^Great!^

This money then gets channeled to GM so they can build that new GMC SUV with a 6.0 V8 that will be exempt from the gas-guzzler tax because it's only a simple truck used by a farmer who really needs the space it offers. :t-crazy2: :D

I love Mercedes Benz as much as the next person but I'm also logical and think that 28 million dollars or more in fines every year are quite ridiculous. It doesn't make good business sense to keep this up and I bet we'll be seeing efforts to trim this down really soon, or to somehow offset the gas guzzling AMG cars. It's about time anyway.

Looks like Daimler might agree with you....

Daimler wants to become CO2 Champion

By Philip Deppe | Jan 13, 2010

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche is not only confident for 2010 as regards the sales of vehicles made by Mercedes-Benz, but also as regards the issue of CO2 emissions. "We are on the way here to take a leadership position," said Zetsche at the Detroit Auto Show.

Objective: By 2012 to be below the 140 g / km CO2 limit. But this will not be achieved through special fuel-saving series or models. On the contrary, all vehicles and variants of the brand are to reach low CO2 emissions, thus ensuring lower total fleet emissions.

In addition, being counted on to reduce CO2 emissions, are vehicles with alternative powertrains, such as the recently introduced B-Class F-CELL, or the second generation smart fortwo electric drive.

Contrary to what people tried to paint up here:)
