Gunther Holtorf recently finished an epic adventure that lasted almost 26 years while driving a Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

It all started when he quit his job as manager at Lufthansa and hopped on an adventure trip with his sky blue 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300GD nicknamed "Otto." The first years were spent crossing African countries with his third wife but the two broke up and in 1990 he placed an ad in the German weekly Die Zeit personal column and got a response from Christine. After that, they travelled to South America, hitting the 200,000 km mark in 1998 while in Argentina.

Next on the itinerary was Central America, followed by Canada, Mexico and Alaska before heading to Australia. The 300GD arrived afterwards in countries such as Syria and Kazakhstan where the odometer reached 500,000 km. Up next were Afghanistan, Turkey, Caribbean, Cuba, United Kingdom and all the other European countries.

Unfortunately, Christine passed away in June 2010 after being diagnosed in 2003 with a tumor of the facial nerve but Holtorf promised her to continue the trip, which he did as the next countries on the agenda were China and North Korea, with support from Mercedes-Benz. Trips to Vietnam and Cambodia followed while the final stop was at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany.

Still running on the original engine, the G-Class rarely broke down and whenever it did, Holtorf had around 400 spare parts stored in aluminum boxes on the roof. The biggest problem occurred during a trip to Madagascar while passing another car when the G-Class began to slide on the soft ground ending with the wheels facing the sky, requiring a trip to Europe for a new body. An axle bearing change was also necessary at 5,000 meters high in the Andes mountains.

The vehicle will be displayed in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, following a 890,000 km (553,020 miles) trip. As a final note, Holtorf and Christine got married two weeks before she passed away.

Mercedes-Benz in Karoline Herfurth's film "SMS Für Dich" (You've Got A Message): On a journey to find love again – in the G-Class

Stuttgart. The new film "SMS Für Dich", starring Karoline Herfurth as children's book illustrator Clara Sommerfeld, opens in cinemas across Germany today. The touching romantic comedy also marks Herfurth's directorial debut. Love in the age of text messaging is the stuff of Hollywood movies, but the director here has created a wistful yet sassy film that touches the heart. It features big name actors and delivers plenty of humour and emotion with a light touch throughout. As she sets off on her journey to find love again, Clara is accompanied by her G‑Class. The robust, iconic off-roader takes the children's book illustrator on some interesting detours through the Berlin metropolis and rural Brandenburg before she ends up in the arms of sports journalist Mark (Friedrich Mücke), the unintended recipient of her pining texts. And Mark's boss, the editor Wortmann (Samuel Finzi) provides some extra tension in his E‑Class.

At the film's premiere in Berlin on 6 September 2016 Mercedes‑B enz laid on an exclusive shuttle service for VIP guests. A selection of the latest Mercedes‑Benz vehicles will also be accompanying the cast on their promotional tour of Germany from 14 to 18 September. About the film "SMS Für Dich"

It's been two years since Clara (Karoline Herfurth) lost her one true love Ben in a car accident. And she still hasn't come to terms with the loss. Even her straight-talking flatmate Katja (Nora Tschirner) is having difficulty getting her friend to take an active interest in life again. Because Clara is unable to move on, she sends a series of distraught text messages to what was Ben's mobile number. What she doesn't know is that the number has been reassigned. So her loving, romantic memories end up with sports journalist Mark (Friedrich Mücke). Puzzled yet touched, he is enthralled by these text messages that are full of longing, something that doesn't go down well with his girlfriend Fiona (Friederike Kempter). Nevertheless, he feels compelled to track down the mysterious stranger and ropes in his best friend David (Frederick Lau) to help.

The comedy is based on the successful 2009 novel of the same name by Sofie Cramer. The film was co-produced by Hellinger/Doll Film production and Warner Bros. Pictures Germany. Financial backing for "SMS Für Dich" was provided by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the German Federal Film Board (FFA) and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).
