When Mercedes discontinued the G 55 AMG earlier this year, literally tens of people were mortified. The G55 was the stuff of car guy dreams: It was built like a tank, looked like a tank and drove like, well, some sort of high-speed tank. It was also the last Mercedes vehicle running the supercharged 5.5-liter V8 which is probably why it got the axe. But now there's a ray of hope in the form of this prototype testing in the American Southwest.

Here's what we know: 1) This car has a much larger grille opening than the G 55 and includes vents where the foglights used to be. 2) The G-Class AMG is wearing 295/45 R20 Yokohama Advan S.T. tires. 3) Our man on the scene said that when it launched -- yes, he said launched -- the full-throttle roar was impressive. That screams 63 to us.

But while the 63 motor makes the most sense, we can't help but think that torque makes trucks great and the TT V12 in the 65 cars has torque in spades. Plus, it's already expensive, what's another 60 grand here or there?

I would love to see a G63, but IMO the G looks better with the "normal" 55 grille and wheels. I also hope that the matte paint will be dropped for the production model.

I'm really pissed at MB for not making the G an uber truck and totally destroy the RR..they really should drop the TT V12 and make an insane G65 AMG..:D

Spyshots: Mercedes G65 AMG Spotted in Dubai

A few months ago we reported that Mercedes was working on a V12 powered top model of the G-Class. It now appears that the G65 AMG is almost ready to hit the markets as three G65′s were spotted in Dubai.

The exterior of the spotted Mercedes G65 AMG is quite familiar, but is distinguished by an aggressive front bumper, larger air intakes, revised grille and new side mirrors. Inside, the cabin is significantly improved with a new instrument cluster with a 320 km/h speedometer, center stack and steering wheel. The revised center console has a new gear knob and a command controller.

The G65 AMG will be powered by a 6.0 liter bi-turbo V12 engine that develops 612 horsepower and 1,000Nm of torque. For comparison, the most powerful stock G-Class on the road, the G55 AMG has a 5.5 liter V8 with 507hp and 700Nm of torque.

This isn’t the first time a V12 is used in the G-Class. Back in 2002, AMG built seven editions of the V12 powered G63 AMG with a maximum power of 444hp and a torque of 620Nm. This model was able to accelerate to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds while the top speed was limited at 210km/h.

The upcoming G65 AMG would be limited to 200 units and the price tag should be approximately € 250,000. The G65 AMG expected to be revealed at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show in January.

Mercedes-Benz Dealer Confirms 2013 G65 AMG, G63 AMG

Rumors of a G65 AMG have been brewing for ages now, with talk of one-off builds for sheiks and 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12s the meat of it. Today, a Mercedes-Benz dealer out of New Orleans let the cat out of the bag.

It's a big, big cat. The 2013 G65 AMG will in fact get the 6.0-liter V-12 sporting twin turbos and 621 horsepower. As for torque, it's a suitably massive 737 pound-feet. Up-sized brakes help rein in the blocky berserker.

The 2013 G63 AMG replaces the G55, named for its new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. Rated at 536 hosrepower, it's not too far behind the G65, and a beastly SUV in its own right.

So far, no official photos or further information has been released, but this is the first (semi) official confirmation we've seen. We'll keep you posted as details develop
.

I'd like to see the V12 in the new GL, but this will do. I'm sure the price will be mind blowing.
