When Mercedes discontinued the G 55 AMG earlier this year, literally tens of people were mortified. The G55 was the stuff of car guy dreams: It was built like a tank, looked like a tank and drove like, well, some sort of high-speed tank. It was also the last Mercedes vehicle running the supercharged 5.5-liter V8 which is probably why it got the axe. But now there's a ray of hope in the form of this prototype testing in the American Southwest.
Here's what we know: 1) This car has a much larger grille opening than the G 55 and includes vents where the foglights used to be. 2) The G-Class AMG is wearing 295/45 R20 Yokohama Advan S.T. tires. 3) Our man on the scene said that when it launched -- yes, he said launched -- the full-throttle roar was impressive. That screams 63 to us.
But while the 63 motor makes the most sense, we can't help but think that torque makes trucks great and the TT V12 in the 65 cars has torque in spades. Plus, it's already expensive, what's another 60 grand here or there?
