Mercedes-Benz has recently stopped the sales of the G55 AMG, with the vehicle’s order books being closed as of November 28. A company source told autoevolution that that the move comes as a result of the fact that the carmaker has received a massive demand for the AMG version of the G-Class and that the rest of the models in the range are still available.

As you know, Mercedes is preparing to introduce a facelift for the G55 AMG, which is expected to arrive next year. Since the vehicle hasn’t been unveiled yet, customers can’t place orders for it and Mercedes can’t allow them to buy the current model either, due to the fact that the aforementioned huge level of demand means the entire production - until the facelift enters the stage - has already found owners.

Considering the fact that the production of the G55 AMG doesn’t bring a high volume, it means that the introduction of the facelift is pretty close. As for what will be under the bonnet, we still don’t know if Mercedes will choose to ditch the current setup for he new twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 that delivers between 525 and 544 hp.

We’ll remind you that a Daimler source confirmed for autoevolution that Mercedes will also build a V12-powered version of the off-roader, which should receive the G65 AMG designation.

Haha my god that is just ridiculous. That old thing is still in demand, now they will give it another facelift, and sort of follow Brabus and put the 6L tt in there...what a crazy combination

I really dont get what people like about this thing. It looks ridiculisly OLD!! Sure, the engine... But still.. Look at it! It's like from 1980.

Thats the whole appeal of it right there, retro. Looks, drives and feels like a tank. I'm not shocked at this since everyone thinks there will be no more AMG version. Enter either the G63 or G65 sometime next year.

It's a legend, and it gets prettier with every day that passes....and how many days has this car been alive? Thousands.
It's like a great red wine. Fantastic car, and amazing looking. I hope they will never change it, only keep updating it.

BTW, the car is getting a whole new interior with the facelift....yet again. With controller knob and all....very awesome....

It really is a old looking car. I see tons of them here in the Middle East every day. Don't get it how people can spent so much money on this car..

Hummm.. world financial crisis...oil is running out....naa no worries the G55 will fix everything. I am surprised that there are still such a high demand for the G55, I thought those who wanted one has already bought one.

Mercedes-Benz Extends G-Class Production Until 2015

Contracts have been renewed for the continued production of Mercedes-Benz's G-Class at Magna Steyr's facilities in Graz, Austria, until 2015. Currently producing the G-Class in three, five-door, convertible and all custom versions, the Magna International division in Graz has output some 200,000 vehicles in its 30 years - satisfying consumers and government contracts alike.

The renewal reinforces Daimler AG's committment to and confidence in Magna, who developed Mercedes-Benz's 4MATIC technology and consequently assemble 4MATIC-equipped E-Class vehicles.

G-Class orders in the amount of 1,200 units from the Australian Army help Magna project itself as a long-term, reliable partner to its clients. Stability is however conveyed more clearly by a balance sheet totalling a net cash position of $1.5bn.

Thanking Daimler AG, Siegfried Wolf, Co-CEO of Magna International, stresses the importance of the news for the local automotive industry in the region of Styria, South Austria, at a time of job losses in the sector and congratulates his staff on their achievements. Further notable achievements include the design and build of BMW's X3 at Magna, Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Jeep Grand Cherokees and the upcoming BMW X1 and MINI Crossover.
