Concept Mercedes-Benz F 800 Style Concept

Future car concepts, design studies, upcoming tech, and what may come next
Umm ... after seeing the RL shots, started to look a bit off. Too small, too narrow.

Agreed. Doesn't look very good to me actually, proportions are off, even the front doesn't look as good when next to other cars. And the rear is god awful, can't decide if it's Audi or the new Sonata.

100% agree. It's way too small for such a car. Those RL pics make it look quite different sadly, in the wrong way. S class platform would've been much better!

Still don't like this car at all. Too many lines going everywhere and the face is just plain too much, way overdone. If this is a mini-CLS it needs to be cleaned up before production. If the real CLS comes out like this, oh boy has Mercedes stepped in it.

It's a concept. It's supposed to be exagerated no?

It's not an MB 'Vision' so it's far from being production material.

I hope you're right.

Then again other MB design studies have gone into production, but with some changes so there is hope.

What strikes me the most regardless of it's styling is how dated it makes the current cars in MBs range look. It has slightly exaggerated styling but that is the nature of F-cars. I am sure vision concepts/production ready vehicles will be toned down.

Overall a striking design, in which I see more next generation C-Class as oppose to a baby CLS. Not entirely convinced by some of the sculpture lines in the side profile but not enough to make me walk away.

Personally I am not a great fan of the CLS but if this is giving clues to the next gen then I am sure we have a treat in store.

I wonder how CoolRaul feels about the 3rd little window :t-hands:

:t-rot:
Aha good one...

I have nothing against a third window, if it flows with the design, which is here the case. Like the Audis for instance, where the third window is totally inherent to and integrated in the design concept. You couldn't imagine the car without that third window, because of the windowline.

Unlike the E Coupe, where it's obviously a quick afterthought for technical impossibility (which finally was true, as it has been rendered necessary by the fuelling system making it impossible for the whole rear window to roll down...).

The windowline of the E Coupe is made for two windows, not three. hence my criticism.

MB put on a great show for the F800.

Strikes me as looking very American 1950's....Oldsmobile, Chrysler, Plymouth, Studebaker...Sunbeam Talbot etc.

I am losing my mind...I am 34 years of age and talking about American classics!!?? GEEZ!!!:t-hair:

PS: INTERIOR - Center console mimics Porsche Panny & new Cayenne...

Oddly, as much as I don't like the concepts direction, the sheet-metal work, and "smoother" edges make everything they have out right now appear dated. Lose lose IMO. I even look at the simplicity of the SLS and automatically my mind envisions this more character-driven look of the F800, as the front ends are so similar, yet different.

Just a little insider info, the original concept was done in the California Design Studio.

Mr. Lee was allowed to take credit for it because of internal political reasons.

The F 800 is not the next CLS !!

I think everybody see that the f800 is not similar to the cls but thanks for the info and you have a cool name :D

Interview with the Mercedes Benz F800 Style Designer, Hubert Lee

Hi, my name is Hyunjoon Park, the next‐generation designer leader reporter sent by the Korea Institute of Design Promotion to Geneva Auto Salon 2010. I interviewed Hubert Lee, the Korean designer who designed the concept car, Mercedes‐Benz F800 Style.

Lee is the lead designer of the F800 Style. While attending the Art Center College of Design in the U.S.A., he did internships at the French car makers Peugeot, Citroen and Volkswagen in California. After graduation, he was employed by the California Advanced Design Studio of Mercedes‐Benz. Currently, he is working as Creative Design Manager. Since starting the project in 2007, Lee worked on this project in different offices in the Stuttgart headquarters and the California studio, making sure that his final work retained the original intentions for the car. He drew inspiration from a marine creature, the stingray.

The positive and negative surfaces are intertwined to create a creative language that evokes sensuality and sexiness. The car is a precursor to what Mercedes‐Benz future cars will look like in the future. “It is actually a privilege. It’s an honor. To design a Mercedes‐Benz, it’s actually rewriting a history,” the designer says with a smile.

The interview is continued with the designer about F800 Style in the following three videos.

New DISTRONIC PLUS Traffic Jam Assistant further reduces the stress of driving

Back in 2006, Mercedes-Benz introduced DISTRONIC PLUS, the world's first proximity and speed control system that operates even when the car is standing still. The system substantially reduces the stress for drivers in dense traffic, as it regulates the distance from the vehicle in front even at very low speeds all the way down to a standstill. With its new DISTRONIC PLUS Traffic Jam Assistant feature in the F800 Style, Mercedes-Benz has also become the world's first automaker to implement a system that is also capable of automatically following the vehicle in front of it into curves. The system recognizes the difference between driving along curving roads and turning, which means it does not "blindly" follow the vehicle up in front - for example, when it changes lanes in order to exit the highway.

The result is that at speeds of up to about 25 mph, the Traffic Jam Assistant function takes care of both longitudinal and transverse movements so that drivers do not have to steer themselves. The driver can just sit back and relax - with hands on the steering wheel. When the 25 mph mark is exceeded, the steering torque that keeps the vehicle in its lane is gradually reduced to a point at which the Traffic Jam Assistant smoothly disengages. Drivers can, of course, override the system at any time. Sensitive sensors notice active steering movements, thus automatically deactivating the system's lateral control function.

"The DISTRONIC PLUS Traffic Jam Assistant is the logical continuation of the Mercedes-Benz assistance and safety philosophy. With it, we are setting another milestone on the path toward creating innovative systems, with which we will further enhance the high driving comfort that is a hallmark of Mercedes," says Prof. Bharat Balasubramanian, Head of Product Innovations & Process Technologies at Group Research and Advanced Engineering. The required data is generated by radar distance sensors that are supplemented by a stereo camera.

It's not clear when this new video camera based system will be put into production, since the "legal
framework" is not in place, according to Jens Desens, the project manager.
