Mercedes Benz Developing New EV Architecture

EQ? Hm...

Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-AMG
Mercedes-Maybach

I'm surprised they will develop an entirely new brand, and not use the existing principle.

What does EQ even stand for?

From Motor-Talk: :)

EQ may stand for "emotional intelligence", for "volunteering (Ehrenamt) and quality" - as well as at the employment office for "entry qualification".

EQA = electric A-Class
EQC = electric C-Class
EQE = electric E-Class
EQG = electric G/SUVs
EQS = electric S-Class

This is so exciting, a whole new family of MB vehicles and they're going to be different in design from the regular Mercedes models. This is just great. Tesla will be in deep shite when MB, Porsche, BMW and Audi are all pumping out electric vehicles with the same quality (that Tesla lacks) as their regular cars.

In Norway there is no tax on Electric vehicles. I don't like the tesla (American build quality+everybody has one it seems).
Been waiting for Mercedes to finally produce electric cars that looks better than the B class.
EQC or EQE would be lovely with 300km actual range (not theoretical)

Mercedes' EV range to target ultra-low drag coefficient via active aero

Concept IAA 1.webp

As a way to boost efficiency and consequently increase range.

Almost a year ago, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the rather spectacular Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile (IAA) concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. With a drag coefficient of only 0.19 just like the VW XL1, the four-door coupe looks like a CLS from the next decade. The company with the three-pointed star logo managed to achieve ‘world-beating aerodynamics’ by implementing an extendable body stretching up to 390 mm (15 inches) at speeds over 50 mph (80 kph) to improve efficiency.

While the concept won’t morph into a production car, Mercedes emphasizes the importance of aerodynamics to achieve better efficiency and increase the range of an electric car. Anke Kleinschmit, Vice President Group Research and Sustainability and Chief Environmental Officer at Daimler, mentioned during an interview with SAE there is still room for improvements in that area for a production car.

Mercedes’ sleekest model on sale today is the CLA 180 BlueEfficiency Edition with a drag coefficient of 0.22 Cd. Anke Kleinschmit mentioned ‘the potential for reducing air resistance has not been exhausted, although it will slow down.’ She also said there is an “asymptotic limit of about 0.20 Cd with ‘conventional’ vehicles” without having to make significant modifications in the basic architecture of a car. The aforementioned CLA version sold in select markets gets close to that number which could be further lowered by the addition of active aero tweaks in the same vein as the IAA concept.

The company’s forthcoming array of EVs rumored to be sold within the ‘MEQ’ sub-brand could take advantage of the technology to grant a longer range. The first of the bunch will allegedly be a crossover set to be previewed in Paris this year by a concept, ahead of a possible market launch in 2019.

It will be interesting to see whether active aero inspired by the IAA concept will be adapted for Mercedes’ EVs seeing as how the main issue with these cars is range anxiety. While active aero won't entirely cure that, any boosts will certainly be appreciated by people shopping in this segment.

I hope that isn't it, otherwise it's a failure waiting to happen.

Mercedes EQC
from 2019

Mercedes is planning a whole family of electric vehicles named EQ. It will start in 2019 with the EQC based on the mid-size SUV GLC. The electric vehicle debuts at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. The EQ models can be identified by a particularly striking front with lots of chrome, a unique headlamp design and variable air guides cooling the batteries. The competition is the Audi Q6 e-tron, BMW i5 and of course the Tesla Model X. To bring the launch forward, Mercedes merged the EQC with the genes of the GLC. The structure of the five- and seven-seat E-Crossovers thus corresponds substantially to the standard car. The underbody and drivetrain are completely new because the batteries must be accomodated in the belly of the car. The two electric motors require a whole lot less space than the combustion engine with the nine speed automatic transmission. The tuned suspension promises a smaller turning radius, and the higher vehicle weight better ride comfort. Mercedes has completely redesigned the interior with additional functionality particular to the start of the new electric world (where BMW led the way with the i3). The two motors should together produce about 350 hp. With approximately 70 kWh the lithium-ion battery has just about the capacity as the basic version of the Tesla Model S. Mercedes claims just under six seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h and a top speed of 225 km/h with a range of 500 kilometers (NEDC, about 200 miles EPA). The base price depending on the battery size ranges from 60000-80000 euros. All information about the Mercedes EQC (2019) can be found on this page: http://www.autobild.de/marken-modelle/mercedes-benz/eqc/1/

You're the MVP! Thanks so much!!
This is amazing to read, I can't wait for the Paris Motorshow.

6 new all electric Benzes but no independent subbrand planned? :)

Thomas-Weber.webp

STUTTGART -- Daimler AG plans to bring out six new Mercedes models with electric powertrains between 2018 and 2024, according to Automobilwoche, a German sibling publication of Automotive News.

The plan -- much larger than previously reported -- focuses on SUVs and crossovers, with compacts and sedans also in the works.

But Daimler will not establish an independent subbrand for these vehicles, as has been widely reported. Instead, company sources say a clearly recognizable product family delineated by a striking design and nomenclature is envisioned. Source: Automotive News

Interesting, but why did they register all those EQ names? A few weeks ago we talked about 4 EV's and now about 6. There is something big going on in Sindelfingen ;)

I'm really curious to know what BMW is going to do with their BMWi-Brand. Seems like they changed their strategy away from focussing on lightweight and sustainable materials and stand-alone cars to electric derivates of existing models like the BMW X4. I'm not an engineer but isn't an EV that was developed as an EV from the ground up the smarter decision?

Mercedes-Benz Cars at the 2016 Paris Motor Show: Electric mobility in the spotlight

Stuttgart/Paris. The attendance of this year's Paris Motor Show by Mercedes‑Benz Cars is characterised by change, both digitally and electrically: celebrating their world premieres in Hall 5.2 will be the electric drive versions of the new smart fortwo, the smart fortwo cabrio and, for the first time, the smart forfour. A Mercedes‑Benz show car embodying a concrete vision of a totally new generation of vehicles with battery-electric drive will also have its world premiere. A new member of the E‑Class family will be on show for the first time: alongside the Saloon and Estate variants, the E‑Class All‑Terrain vehicle is a new, lifestyle-oriented addition to the model range.

The focus on the topic of electric mobility is supported by the architecture of the trade show stand and its media presentations. Running centrally from the front edge through to the large LED panel on the rear building is the E‑Mobility Lane: the electric vehicles from Mercedes‑Benz Cars are positioned on black, backlit glass. They form the cordon for the Mercedes‑Benz show car which is displayed in the central perspective. This provides a specific vision of a completely new vehicle generation with battery-electric drive system.

Architecturally the stand, which covers a total area of 2500 square metres, is framed by the "Silver Flow". This extensive, attention-grabbing shape has been the symbol of Mercedes-Benz's global trade show attendance since 2014.

A new feature is the integration of social media communication in the stand design: presentations on key topics are streamed via Facebook Live to the Mercedes community – at the same time, the stream can also be viewed on the five media panels on the stand.

Several world premieres from smart, Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG

In total Mercedes-Benz Cars is presenting around 30 vehicles in Paris, including several world premieres:
  • the new smart electric drive makes entry into the world of electric mobility easier than ever. This is because it combines the unique agility of the smart with local emission-free driving – perfect for urban mobility. Fourth-generation emission-free driving pleasure can be enjoyed not just in the smart fortwo coupé and smart fortwo cabrio, but now also for the first time in the four-seater smart forfour. As a result smart is the only brand to offer its entire model range not only with petrol engines but also with electric drive.
  • A new member of the E-Class family will be on show for the first time in the guise of the E‑Class All‑Terrain: thanks to off-road-based design features, the All-Terrain boasts a powerful and robust look and at the same time stands out from the classic estate. Dynamism and modern luxury are combined with status-enhancing poise and assurance, and follow the current design idiom.
  • The new Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé combines a sporty, elegant design with the brand's hallmark Driving Performance and the advantages of an SUV in terms of seating position, interior flexibility and also traction off the beaten track. The 270 kW (367 hp) 3.0‑litre V6 biturbo engine, the automatic transmission 9G‑TRONIC with shortened shift times and the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive configured with a rear bias form the basis for an especially dynamic on-road driving experience. Additionally, the GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé also enables occasional off-road excursions to be undertaken: the ground clearance can be increased at the touch of a button, and the pneumatic all-round self-levelling ensures a constant vehicle level at all times.
A further highlight is the Vision Mercedes‑Maybach 6, which is celebrating its show premiere in Paris. The 2+2‑seater pays homage to the glorious age of the aero coupés and consciously carries this tradition forward into the future. The coupé reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in an extreme way, following the Mercedes design philosophy of sensual purity. The Vision Mercedes‑Maybach 6, which measures almost six metres in length, is designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). The flat battery in the underbody enables a range of more than 500 km (NEDC).

Mercedes-AMG's continued expansion of the GT family will also be in evidence at the Paris Motor Show. Hot on the heels of the new AMG GT R, the sports car and performance brand will be presenting a further variant of the GT model series on the eve of the Paris Motor Show.

To me this hologram (?) screams CLS :O

Edit: after comparing the pictures here to the Concept Style Coupé from a couple of years ago, I don't think we see here a new model.
