CLK-Class (C209) Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Picture Thread

The Mercedes-Benz C209 is the second generation CLK-Class, launched in 2002. The car was available in both hardtop coupé (C209) and in soft-top convertible (A209). Although its design and styling was derived from the E-Class, the mechanical underpinnings were based on the smaller C-Class. It was succeeded by the E-Class C207. Production: 2001–2009.

Re: Mercedes CLK GTR Picture Thread

Even though the racing version of this car made history by its dominance on the racetrack, I have always thought the road version of this car to be quite ugly.

The most exotic street-legal Mercedes-Benz I know of. Having one of these in the garage seperates the real Mercedes enthusiasts $$$ from everybody else.

The real enthusiast would have one of these - The 99 CLRs.

In total, four CLRs were constructed by HWA and of those, two remain in existence. The surviving #6 car, with yellow mirrors was never raced again, and it is not shown at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, apparently having been sold to a private collector. It was driven in 2001 at the Hockenheimring, and in June 2009 on the Nürburgring[3][4]. At least one CLR was exhibited in 2008 as part of an event for driver Bernd Schneider.[5]

The car was amazing, it is actually lower than even an F1 car, but of course all that came to naught once it started flying around.

As for the CLK GTR, it was an amazing looking car. I once saw a black one at a the montrey car show, and transfixed for the better part of an hour.

But as a street cars, they were pretty flawed (like most other homogenized GT racers) with huge turning circles, no rear ward visiblity, and chance of the hot exhaust setting the car on fire.

2002 Mercedes CLK GTR Roadster For Sale at $2,800,000

04bd2d764a1b518088782bc8758592fe.webp

An extremely rare Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster is currently up for sale privately in the United States with a high asking price of $2.8 million.

A mere 26 examples of the Mercedes-Benz GLK GTR were created and just six of those were roadsters. Last year, one managed to sell for $1.3 million with just 114 km on the clock. As for this Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster, it has covered less than 100 km and despite being in excellent condition, it is highly improbable the asking price will be reached.

Beyond the price, the car itself has a long and proud racing pedigree and is extremely similar to the CLK GTR endurance racer. It was brought to life when the German manufacturer created the CLK LM to replace the GTR racer and Mercedes-Benz decided to create 26 road-going CLK GTRs as a final send off.

Beneath the skin, the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster’s 6.9-litre V12 engine delivers a total of 604 hp and 572 lb-ft of torque. Consequently, it can sprint to 96 km/h in just 3.8 seconds before topping out at a top speed of 320 km/h, figures still impressive to this day!

I'm not a fan of the Roadster, the Coupe is a better looking vehicle. There was one for sale in NZ about 10 years ago at Mercedes dealer close to where I worked, it was a loud car for sure. What made it ven more interesting was 200m down the road is a Porsche dealer they had a GT1 for sale at the same time.

I personally think the best of the breed was the Toyota GT1

The Coupe much better indeed.

Watch How The Mercedes CLK-Class Evolved Through The Years
Jul 27, 2018 at 4:44pm By: Christopher Smith
Or, just revisit the awesomeness that is the CLK GTR.
We love checking out the various incarnations of car evolution videos on YouTube. The latest from Cars Evolution walks us through the brief history of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class, which spent 12 years either infatuating or infuriating auto enthusiasts, depending on your disposition towards the category. That’s because the CLK was a curious melding of E-Class looks with C-Class underpinnings. To some the combination was like peanut butter and jelly, others felt it was more like peanut butter and battery acid.
No matter where you fall on the CLK chart, pretty much everyone agrees the CLK GTR – which technically was part of the CLK-Class – was an amazing machine. It was arguably the greatest supercar of the 1990s, built to go racing with just 26 examples made for the road. After a ho-hum CLK introduction with the 1997 CLK 320 Coupe the video reminds us just how much we love the GTR, while likely providing a GTR education to some. That’s because the video shows us two rare versions that are often forgotten – the CLK GTR Supersport with a bigger 7.3-liter V12, and the CLK GTR Roadster. Two Supersports and six Roadsters were built, and we still lust for them today as much as we did in the early 2000s.
The CLK GTR is an extremely tough act to follow, but the video does give us a nice review of AMG’s involvement in the CLK-Class through the years. We forgot just how cool the 2003 CLK 55 AMG was; we’d have one over the newer 2007 CLK 63 AMG also featured in the video despite the significant power difference. The video ends with the 2009 CLK 500, which also wraps up the CLK experiment – Mercedes-Benz morphed the models back into the E-Class for 2010.

Watching this video, it’s easy to forget that this branch of Mercedes also was home to the forgettable CLK 200, and these days you can pick up a CLK 230 Kompressor for about the same price as a new pair of shoes. We even had our own Motor1.com family squabble about the CLK-Class back in late 2016, with scribes Anthony Karr and Chris Bruce taking sides on whether the first-generation CLK was worthy of worst sports cars classification.
Love it or hate it, the moniker did produce some memorable machines.
