E-Class (W124) Mercedes-Benz 124 series: An automotive milestone becomes a Young Classic

The Mercedes-Benz W124 is the first generation of the E-Class range. Body styles: sedan/saloon (W124), estate/wagon (S124), coupé (C124), cabriolet (A124), and limousine (V124). Production: 1985–1995 (sedan), 1985-1996 (estate), 1987-1996 (coupé), 1992–1997 (cabriolet). Predecessor: W123. Successor: W210 E-Class and C208 CLK-Class.
Though in the early years the W124 had some quality issues. German taxidrivers even drove up to Sindelfingen and wanted to give their W124 back (and some change it for a W123, at that time called "the last true Mercedes-Benz") l'histoire se répète...

Almost 30 years old and still one of the most beautiful coupes ever made :)
Look at the couple in the 2nd picture, it doens't get more 80-ies than this. Wait, do I hear Human League's "Don't you want me" coming out of the open window...?

Mercedes W124 is known as one of the most reliable Mercedes and cars in general, except for a recent example of longevity reveals what is really the cost of ownership.

After five years at Mercedes, Michael Nickl decided to use the privilege in the form of discounts for employees and so the choice fell exactly on the Mercedes model. It was 1992, a Nickl decided already proven W124, in the Spartan base version with a diesel engine.

You guessed it, 200D in the "midnight" blue, and the list of options were power sunroof, central locking, central locking, radio and the rear backrests. Thus equipped the car cost is DEM 40,523.81, a Nickl was planning to sell the car through the year thanks to the initial alert even if some money.

But today, a quarter of a century later, Nickl still sitting behind the wheel once a prestigious sedan driven by the diesel engine only 75 bhp and 126 Nm. But there is one difference, and that is that the car no longer looks so fresh, and it's pretty corrosion attack. No wonder, since its owner is not a lover of cars and experiencing them as objects that are used for transportation from point A to point B. And yes, there is one detail - the car has driven millions of kilometers.

During those millions of kilometers the car is now 55-year-old owner let down only once, when the clutch is canceled after 445,000 km. Legendary W124 took part in a small car accident, and repair parts were from the waste. During their working life have been changed the clutch, brakes, alternator and water pump.

Owner's guide and a detailed dossier car, so we can find out that the total cost of ownership for this period amounted to € 58,563.26, while the fuel spent € 53,786.28.

A little or a lot, judge for yourself.

Yes a E500 and a E320 Cabrio would be the the perfect W124 garage. Mercedes hasn't made a car as special as the W124 E500 until the new S Cabrio, C63 Cabrio and it appears that the new E Coupe and Cabrio will be be close (if that is even possible) to the C124 Coupe and Cabrios.

The only difference is if you buy a W124 is that your only costs are the car and servicing. Buy the right one and there is no depreciation.

W124 to my eyes is still better looking than all the E classes that came after it. The classic grill on the Coupe look so much more flamboyant than these sports grills of today. The AMG 300 CE in the pictures above is a masterpiece.

I drove a 200E many many years ago - I think it was in 2008. I still remember the built quality (many classes above my -then new- S60), the resistance of the accelerator, the insane fuel consumption and the fact that with about 130hp it felt as like it made just 60 hp.

This must be one of the slowest cars ever been posted on GCF, but old faithful it is gently will get to break neck speed.
