Mercedes-Benz´s AMG division is considering a number of fuel sources that include diesel for its future cars. According to a Whatcar report, Oliver Wiech, AMG's product manager for the C-Class, E-Class, SLK and SL did not exclude the possible use of diesel power for upcoming models. "We are taking an open view and looking at lots of options," Wiech said, "but if you look at our announcement on the electric SLS, you can see what is in the future."
That means electricity is a definite while others such as hydrogen, solar energy and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are possibly only secondary considerations.
A 2008 report published in WCF speculated that a new C-Class AMG super diesel worth about 368kW (525hp) and 900Nm would be built by the year 2011.

Mercedes' AMG Division Considering Diesel?

I hope this is just an alternative and not a ustutution of the current petrol AMGs.

If BMW is developing a tri-turbo diesel engine, then MB has have to answer this threat.

About the AMG diesels, they had one in the C class 3 door 6 to 7 years ago, it wasn't popular so it died a quiet death

MB has their own concept tri turbo diesel engine back in 2005 with their 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLK 320 CDI Tri-Turbo concept.

Actually, the C30 CDI AMG was available in every C-class variant; 3, 4, and 5 doors.

It would be great if AMG would do something with the OM629 (4.0l V8 CDI). Call it the 56 CDI AMG, as an homage to the 5.6 M117 that put AMG on the map. Or they could retune the OM642 (3.0l V6 CDI) for a 36 CDI AMG, the first official AMG in the US.

Take the 4.0l V8 and give it the tri turbo setup, should be good for over 400hp and who knows how much torque.
Sell it in the S, GL, ML and E.

Does adding more and more turbos make an engine better? I doubt that, two turbos should be fine.

Feels like starting in the wrong end.

The measure in this should be the Alpina D3.

With three you have turbos for low rpm and for high rpm, this gives you best performance at all rpm with no lag at all. One large turbo for higher rpm, and two very small turbos for low rpm.

They don't just throw on extra turbos for fun.

I think AMG's biggest mistake was touching an SUV, which goes against everything AMG stands for.

I would take your suggestion, but instead of GL & ML, rather the CL(S-coupé), CLS, SL, and SLS.

I also estimated the OM629 to be good for ~400hp and the same 1000nm a the 65 without compromising reliability or longevity.

Although the rumors of that engine disappearing altogether would probably make the attractiveness of an AMG variant less attractive.

Still, the OM642 or its successor is prime tuning equipment that will be around for a while.

The reason I would like to see that engine in the ML/GL is that it would make the perfect towing vehicle. You don't have to call that one an AMG.
But the GL is already a great towing vehicle, now just give it big rig power and mpg in the 20s

No AMG diesel versions planned

When it comes to the statements from AMG boss Ola Källenius, there will be no AMG diesels in the near future.

"We have discussed the option again and again - and decided against it," said AMG boss Ola Källenius recently at the launch of the latest AMG models in California, the ML 63 AMG with its twin-turbo V8 gasoline engine with 5.5 liters displacement and 525 hp, and with Performance Package 557 hp and a maximum speed of 280 km/h. AMG is currently working on yet another Mercedes 4X4 vehicle - the G-Class to give the model after the facelift in 2012 a V8 and V12 engine.

Looking at the competition from Ingolstadt, Audi in the new S and RS models will also not offer diesel engines.
