I think for a truly groundbreaking car in this class, Audi or BMW would need to do something under their own brands and their own design philosophies.

The Germans should have bought the british and disbanded them, leaving the road completely clear for Audi, BMW and MB to do whatever they wanted. :D

Lol! Only if.

Sure, MB were having tough times...but BMW were not exactly doing great either ...but they took a lot of risks with the 7er and the Phantom.

Funny you should say that modena_360stradale, because I have often said the exact opposite ...I think Maybach missed the opportunity to be unique in this segment ..they could have offered something quite brilliant if they had only been original. The Maybach is fantastic, we both agree on that ..but they didn't exactly take many risks with it. Maybach could have been revolutionary ...a true statement of twenty-first century luxury. Instead, we got a cliché wood and leather interior ...very nice, but hardly groundbreaking.

I really respect your opinions, but I have to disagree :P I can see where you're coming from, but I love lots of wood and leather.

Just curious: How do you think they should have designed the interior?

Maybe if they had used a bench seat in the back with a backrest-recline feature, and used classic wood accents, like in the 600, it'd have been less overwhelming? Or in your case underwhelming :P

Like in the 600 pictured below, it has a statelier, more substantial look and feel to it. Maybe because there's a sense of occassion about it?

I still love the Maybach interior though.

And it paid off immensely. But Schremp was more concerned about selling an MB to every man and his dog rather than nurturing it’s existing core values while at the same time pushing it into the future.

Schremp ....ARGGGGHHHHHH ...that guy has been beaten up enough now I think.

You're right. They became a money making machine; interested in deepening their pockets rather than making beautiful cars. Hopefully Zetsche can bring them around again.

I would love to have seen something far more contemporary .....design at the highest level of contemporary culture. They could have had input from the world's greatest product designers ...there really was no limit to what was possible.

The way I see it, if the Maybach is supposed to be the ultimate expression of uncompromised luxury and style in the 21st century, a car designed for the elite ...then why does it conform so much to middle-class taste ....it should have been elitist in every respect.

Whether you liked the BMW 7er or not ...it was designed from a far higher level of culture than the Maybach. The Maybach is of course of superior quality, but it's design is ultra-conservative and less sophisticated.

modena_360stradale, do you have a Maybach? (It's in your signture :D)

I was walking home last night when this Maybach 62 pulls over and the driver asks me if there's a sushi restaurant around here (Doesn't he use his state-of-the-art Sat Nav?).
It took me a minute to answer him 'cause I'm just standing there staring at the car's interior and its size :eyebulge6 . So I tell him where the nearest sushi restaurant is and I ask him "What's it like driving this baby?" He simles and says "impressive!". I also ask him how does he parallel park a car this size. He says he doesn't. He just double parks most of the time :D

I'm always awed by the sheer size of this vehicle and how QUITE its massive engine is. I mean I stood there talking to the guy and I heard NO hint of whatso ever of the engine running. Even when he took off with impressive acceleration, nothing, nada! My God, how do they do that?

Weird thing though is that the driver had the passenger seat moved all the way up front as though the 62 doesn't have enough legroom in the back LOL.
Sadly, no pictures. I didn't want to take out my cell and start snapping pics away.

Unfortunately I don't. I'd absolutely love to have one though :D

But then there arises the age old question.. which is actually better, the Bentley, the Rolls or the Maybach?

:P

The only MM I want is the 51s. I remember seeing it on a lebanese televison channel. It is dead gorgeous, especially the interior combo.

Thanks, Rob. I'll always love armoured cars.

I still think the Maybach is a terrible choice for an armoured vehicle. It stands out far too much. It is difficult to decipher from the pictures, but the car's windows do not look too thick. My guess is that it is probably a B4 armoured car. It could stop a .44 Magnum from point-blank, but an AK-47, readily available and easy to buy, could punch the passengers full of holes.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
