- Maybach -

LOL ...I'm surprised anyone bothered to answer my post Zonda ....I think many people are all "Maybached" out ....we have discussed it at length so many times.

BTW, I do think the Maybach is a fabulous car in every respect ...but I continue to believe the Rolls-Royce Phantom has convincingly beaten it in terms of prestige and desirability.

Each has their own taste but imo the Maybach is everything a luxurycar should be. It's very exclusive, custom built, powerfull etc. While the Phantom is on the other hand more like a bling mobile.

Well you are right about that ...I can't argue with you there.

If luxury means prestige, elegans and style then yes the Phantom is the best thing out there. There are several R&B and hiphop stars who have traded in their MMs for Phantoms.
By buying an SUV or a large van you can customise it to the point when it has all the luxury features of the MM but it is practically impossible to change your car so that it is as elegant as the Phantom.

Luwalira, I absolutely think you have hit the nail with this post.

BEAUTIFUL!!! Yes Happy B-Day !!!! Sophisticated luxury at its best... Very nice!

i like the Phantom too....

I feel the real test is to be in both cars and work the amenities to see which is more comfortable/convenient.

I've been in both and unfortunately the Phantom, although beautiful outside, feels like a cave inside, the seats are bit too bulbous in the back and the C-pillars, although they do provide privacy, are more of an annoyance than anything else. You don't sit low in the seats like Rolls of the past but almost higher than the driver.

But! The driving position is perfect. Better than an Arnage. It has more room, it's more comfortable, greater view, etc. :D

The Maybach, though, takes the cake. I could never get past the "common" looks of the car until I sat in it. It's absolutely perfect! The leather is unbeatable, there are no more comfortable seats in the world, the wood detailing is absolutely perfect and when you touch the paint it feels like polished marble.

It is THE car to be driven in.

The only attractive thing about the Phantom (though I concede that the front is a great place to sit and the classic styling is, though painful to say, better than the modern styling of the Maybach) is the sheer size and impressiveness of the thing. If the Maybach looked like the Phantom, no one would ever buy the latter.

I think you are judging these cars with the same yardstick ....they are just too different from each ...in the end it comes down to personal taste.

sure the mm might be huge and pretty nice on the inside but that pic shows that the bentley still stands out more than it does because bentley and rr have more class and more heritage than it and well they look better and stand out.

It's absolutely true. The Maybach's styling is "bland" in pictures, though no one misses it when it drives by.

The beautiful thing about Bentleys and Rolls Royces are their true, classic, English styling. And you can see that on the exterior and the interior. Classic styling is unbeatable, in my opinion.

But the comfort of the Maybach and the beauty of the interior details (even if it is modern) makes it a great contender for Bentley and Rolls. If only Maybach's designers looked to history for design inspiration.

Wow great...I wish I had the opportunity to compare these cars in real life.

So four years now...say another 4 more before Maybach really throws down the gauntlet with a new one? :t-hands:

I seem to have deleted my post..

But, yes it is a matter of personal taste. I see people say the Maybach is just a big S-Class, etc. etc. But that's only the sheetmetal design. The car is infinitely more comfortable inside, and not to mention the wood work is unbeatable in most cases, excluding Bentley.

I've loved the Maybach since the moment I saw it in real life, and then I sat in it and it almost sealed the deal, except for one tiny factor: styling. Would you rather show up in a gorgeous Arnage, or the Maybach? Sure the Maybach may be the best technically, most comfortable, etc. but it seems like it'd be like wearing Gucci sweat-pants to a formal dinner party.

You need to look the part, too.

The Phantom is definitely my favourite ...but I can't imagine using it very often ...the Maybach 57S would be the car I would love to own and drive myself in .....and it is far more applicable to the "real world" ..the Phantom is like a big movie prop in some ways ..it's very stylized ....cartoonish even.

Yeah, it was phenomenal :D

Is it going to be four years from now? :( Bentley said they like to make 10 or 12 year runs with their cars and Maybach (since it's effectively Mercedes) might only make the usual 7. (?)

I wish they'd make it more teutonic, boxy and classic looking. Then they'd be the ultimate competition for Rolls and Bentley.

Haha! You took the words out of my mouth. It does look a bit caricature-ized, but I think it's beautiful nonetheless.

The only turn off for me (for the 57s) is the carbon fiber interior. Do you have to specify that on the model? Or is it standard and irremovable?

You do not have to have the carbon fiber ...personally, I would rather have the black wood, "piano wood".

Funny you should say that modena_360stradale, because I have often said the exact opposite ...I think Maybach missed the opportunity to be unique in this segment ..they could have offered something quite brilliant if they had only been original. The Maybach is fantastic, we both agree on that ..but they didn't exactly take many risks with it. Maybach could have been revolutionary ...a true statement of twenty-first century luxury. Instead, we got a cliché wood and leather interior ...very nice, but hardly groundbreaking.

True. But MB was a complete basket case back then and was in no position to be taking risks. They still aren't.

I think for a truly groundbreaking car in this class, Audi or BMW would need to do something under their own brands and their own design philosophies.

The Germans should have bought the british and disbanded them, leaving the road completely clear for Audi, BMW and MB to do whatever they wanted. :D

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
