A Brief History of the Maybach produced from 1919 to 1935

1919:W 1 - A test car based on a Mercedes chassis and did not see series production.1920:
W 2 - This was the designation code for an engine of which 1000 units were ordered for use in the Spyker 30/40 Dutch luxury car. However, not all the engines ordered were actually purchased, the financial consequences forcing Karl Maybach to build cars himself in order to use the unsold W 2 engines.

1921:

1926:
W 5 - The W 5 followed in 1926, and was also powered by an inline six-cylinder engine (6992cc displacement, 120 hp). Later, this model was also offered with an overdrive transmission system as the W 5 SG. Unit figure: 248 vehicles.

1931:
W 6 - This was produced from 1931 to 1933 with the six-cylinder from the W 5. From 1934 it was available with a twin-overdrive transmission (W 6 DSG). Both variants had a longer wheelbase than the W 5. Unit figure: 90 vehicles.

1930:
DS 7 and DS 8 - The Maybach "Zeppelin" was introduced in mid-1930 with a 7-liter, V12 engine that developed 150 hp. The precursor to this model was the Maybach 12 (1929). The later DS 8 variant with 8-liter displacement developed 200 hp and was offered as a chassis from 1931 for 29,500 Reichsmarks. Unit figure: 183 vehicles.

1930:
DSH - The DSH ("Doppel-Sechs-Halbe" – "half a twelve-cylinder") was built from 1930 to 1937, powered by a 5.2-liter, six-cylinder, 130-hp engine. Unit figure: 34 vehicles.

1935:
SW 35 - 42 - The SW 35 (1935), SW 38 (1936) and SW 42 (1939 to 1941) models with swing axle were the last Maybach cars built. I for one surely hope for a brighter future for a such an exclusive brand.

^
Agree. I can`t see a facelift with such an expensive, exclusive car. The SLR didn`t get one either.. The Mayback will have to run it`s course until another model breakes cover if that happens...

I just don't see where they can go with it? Maybe the tie-up with Aston-Martin will give them something.

Oh, but the Maybach is getting a facelift.

M

I hope so too. It is just a pity this great marque was revived for such cynical reasons.

So True Rob,MB just did out of jealousy from BMW and VW acquiring RR and Bentely. But IMO the MM cars itself are more than enough to beat the other two it';s the design that wasn't excuted properly.

Oh, but the Maybach is getting a facelift.

M

Is it official Marcus?

Nothing official, but there was some photos posted a while back.

M

Well i hope they really do some extra effort this time with the design.

Wow, If you could find that info please post it..

If Mercedes decided to redesign a new Maybach with the design team we have. There wouldn`t be any doubt it would be fabluous car.

Remember this:

Not sure where they are with this now, maybe it was nothing, but I can't see Mercedes not giving this car a facelift. If they can give the R a lift, they can give the Bach one too IMO.

M

Nice shots but that honestly doesn`t look like a face/lift except for the white graph in the taillights. Maby I`m wrong but as I said. The Maybach is a $350,000k+ dollar car.

Cars costing that much are not considered fashion trends that the designers wave their magick wands over to change to look more updated.
The Maybach is a royal icon much like Roll Royce. These cars should never be updated with new looks and trends.

^ I agree GTa,what i hope for is concentration of efforts on the all new ones including a coupe and convertible:usa7uh:

I'm not sure about that, but what I do know is that the Maybach is outdated compared to the S-Class in electronics/telematics. It needs an update badly, especially when a C350 has a better nav system with hardrive and the Maybach is still using a DVD.

The car does IMO need a styling update since it wasn't exactly a standout to begin with. The 57S was a step in the right direction, but more is needed since this market is as much about looks as it is status. The current Maybachs share nothing with their kin from 70 years ago so I don't see why an update wouldn't apply. It is neither classic or good looking outside of the 57S model. Lets face it Maybach's current template is blank and a new look wouldn't matter one bit, it would likely help a great deal at this point. Maybach doesn't have a classic look like Rolls-Royce or Bentley to adhere too or draw upon so trying to keep things the same will only spell the end of this brand. A total re-work, re-design is in order if they are ever going to make Maybach relevant to the crowd currently buying up Bentleys and Rollers.

M

The MM is indeed out-dated compared to S class but so is the RR and Bentley compared to new 7er and A8.But i think it's a consolation enough to know that although MM based on an "old" platform is still the most tech advanced compared to RR and Bentley.

A total redesign of the brand is inevitable if they want to keep it goin and face RR and Bentley and i believe MB got the lesson well and the designers are working miracles now with the all new family due in three years time.

Ahh...but you see the old-school Bentleys trade on just that, being old school and old-fashioned. That is their draw, claim to fame if you will. Their buyers wouldn't have them any other way, right now. Come 2010 who knows what the next generation Arnage family will be like. I cringe at the thought. The Rolls isn't as outdated as you think. It is a very modern car very arguably moreso than the Maybach.

Even if the Maybach is more advanced than the Roller (which I doubt), the Rolls doesn't trade on its tech, it goes for a new age slant on the classic Roller themes. The Maybach is the one that trades on the numbers, features, electronics, etc. etc. so it needs to be more up to date than the Roller to compete. It should have the technical edge because it doesn't have the heritage, charm, that "specialness" side of the question, but I don't think it has the technical advantage either. Sure it will beat the Rolls up on the road, but that isn't exactly the point of these cars.

A Maybach is an extension of a Mercedes so it should be the most technically advanced. The Roller has nothing to do with the 7-Series so it doesn't really have to be more technically advanced. Long as it looks and drives the part, people won't care about which version of Idrive its running.

The sticky part for Mercedes/Maybach is how bad does Mercedes want to show up the S-Class as being the best luxury sedan in the world by introducing a truly superior Maybach? That is very, very risky.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
