Leakage: Lexus LF-A Roadster

Motive dropped Lexus' bomb on the unsuspecting masses a few minutes ago, showing the convertible version of the LF-A premium sports car concept. The high-po roadster is made up of carbon fiber and aluminum, supposedly maintaining a high amount of structural rigidity even without its roof.

Pulling both design and (assumed) engineering from the LF-A coupe, the roadster will be packing approximately 5.0-liters in its front-mounted V10, sending over 500 hp down to a transmission fitted between towards the back for optimal weight balance.

We'll have more from the show floor when the LF-A takes the stage, but in the meantime, check the gallery of images below.

Detroit Auto Show: Lexus LF-A Convertible Revealed

Only a few hours to go until the Lexus press conference and now we know the Japanese Premium Brand will be revealing a new LF-A concept in roadster form after the release of a whole bunch of press photos.

From what we know so far much of the coupe version will be inherited - with the same dimensions apart from a slightly longer wheelbase and power will come from the same V10 500+ horsepower engine that is capable or reaching more than 200mph.

Lexus LF-A Takes on Roadster Form - An Open Version of the Supercar Concept Revealed

DETROIT, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ — The engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A premium sports car concept as a medium for expressing their ideas about what a high-performance sporting vehicle not only can be, but should be. In this latest expression of the LF- A, they have removed the car’s top to create a high-performance
roadster.
The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure’s strength and rigidity even without a top.
Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster is powered by a high-revving V10 engine that approaches 5.0 liters in displacement. The V10, capable of more than 500 horsepower and test-track speeds greater than 200 mph, is mounted in front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what the LF-A’s engineers refer to as a “front-mid” configuration.
The engine is connected via a torque tube and propeller shaft to a transaxle that is controlled by paddle shifters. The torque tube is a structural member that adds rigidity to the drivetrain and chassis while also reducing vibration.
Styling is rooted in the Lexus L-Finesse design philosophy, conferring the LF-A Roadster’s front end with a compact, low-profile, aerodynamic shape. Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster stands just 48 inches tall, but the Roadster configuration adds a speed adaptive rear wing.
The rear is marked by a pair of wrap-around, arrowhead-shaped taillights that bracket a pair of large grilles. These grilles vent the heated air from the car’s two rear-mounted radiators into the LF-A Roadster’s aerodynamic wake. The radiators are fed cool air by two large intake ducts mounted just above the rear wheel wells. This aft radiator positioning not only allowed the designers to keep the car’s front profile low and tight but also aided the LF-A’s chassis engineers in their search for optimal weight distribution.
Helping to provide balance and scale to the design, which features an overall length of 175.6 inches and a wheelbase of 102.6 inches, are high- performance tires on turbine-styled alloy wheels. The front tires are 265/35R20s, while the rears are 305/30R20s. Like the LF-A coupe, the brakes consist of 14.2-inch cross-drilled, vented discs up front, and 13.6-inch cross-drilled, vented discs at the rear. The front brake calipers are six- piston units and the rear calipers use four pistons each.
An “F” logo, located on each front fender of the Roadster, indicates the vehicle’s status as a part of the new “F” marque. The name is derived from the original “F” designation for the first Lexus LS prototype. That vehicle was internally coded “Circle-F,” with the “F” standing for “flagship.” The Circle-F designation further evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept developed into Lexus’ first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the “F” code has come to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development process. In addition, Fuji Speedway is the IS F’s home circuit, and the shape of the F- logo was inspired by many of the track’s turns. The all-new Lexus IS F sport sedan is the first production vehicle to carry the F marque.

Re: Lexus LF-A Roadster @ 2008 NAIAS

Absolutely stunning. Gentleman what we have here is the first true lust object from Lexus. I no longer blame them for taking so long to roll this thing out because they want it to be perfect. The color, interior all of it just gorgeous. I will be photographing this car next week when I see it in person. You guys aren't going to believe it when this shows up at a normally dowdy Lexus showroom.

The first production (almost) japanese car that looks great and that looks japanese by essence.

Re: Lexus LF-A Roadster @ 2008 NAIAS

Lexus' L-finesse design style is actually cutting edge -- and in some ways I think they beat BMW to this design language when the LF-A débuted in 2005. The BMW CS Concept follows a very similar theme.

There are very obvious references to the influential designs of Zaha Hadid and Amanda Levete EXAMPLES HERE

Re: Lexus LF-A Roadster @ 2008 NAIAS

^^
There are indeed some similarities with Zaha's design, very alien/organic and free flowing. Can't see any similarities with the BMW CS, though. They look very different if you ask me. What makes the CS attractive is all the flame surfacing and character lines found here and there, while the Lexus charms me with the radical head lights, air intakes and exhaust pipes.

I wonder if there is any boot space, because the engine is actually located in the front and not behind the seats which is the impression given by the air inlets on the sides.

Lexus has used the 2008 Detroit show to continue to tease us with its LF-A supercar, this time out bringing a roadster concept variant of its coming high-end sports coupe to its show stand. Called the LF-A Roadster, the carbon fiber and aluminum-clad open-top is of course based on the coupe and is powered by the not-quite 5.0-liter V-10 lurking underhood that Lexus says is capable of more than 500 horsepower and terminal velocity in excess of 200 mph. The engine is mounted in what Lexus calls a "front-mid" configuration and is located behind the front-axle centerline and in front of the passenger compartment. Like the coupe, the roadster's styling is steeped in the Lexus L-Finesse design language and stands just 48 inches tall. The roadster's overall length is175.6 inches with a 102.6-inch wheelbase. Changes to the Roadster include a speed adaptive rear wing and a pair of grilles bracketed by wrap-around, arrowhead-shaped taillights. The grilles to help vent air from the vehicle's rear-mounted radiators, which are fed air by ducts mounted just above the wheel wells. The radiators location also helps with the vehicle's weight distribution. The rims feature a turbine-look and are shod with 265/35R20s front, 305/30R20s at the rear. As with the LF-A coupe, the brakes are 14.2-inch cross-drilled, six-piston, vented discs up front, with 13.6-inch cross-drilled, four-piston, vented discs out back. OK, Lexus, enough with the concepts, let's see the production version already!

I agree this thing is hot, but the production version needs to come out in less than a year.

Re: Lexus LF-A Roadster @ 2008 NAIAS

The exterior styling is growing on me, I just don't like the blunt front end design, and the wide horizontal rear end. Those silver carbon fibre trims looks rather tacky as well. However the interior is amazing, it is minimalistic, futuristic, and most of all, stylishly original. Can't wait to see one in gun-metallic grey, black or white.

Just noticed the engine redlines at 9000rpm, if I am correct, even the BMW V10 can't match that figure.

Oh yeah yeah ....they are very different -- but they have been influenced by a similar aesthetic reference point.

Car designers (like all designers) are very quick to pick up on new trends in all art, architecture, and product design. The furniture industry is often one of the very first industrial sectors to adapt new design ideas -- many influential architects and designers work in the field of domestic design (furniture and household products) to experiment with new styling ideas and market/lifestyle trends. This is why trade fairs like the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile attract so much interest from all sectors of industry -- and that very much includes the auto-industry :usa7uh:
