LFA Lexus LF-A Production Version Supercar (Spy pics & info)

It has all the makings to become Lexus' first superstar. I can't wait to see the production version officially.

Yowsers! Headline reads: "Lexus steals S85 V10 from BMW - drops it into LF-A!"

Guys, chill! I was making a joke based on the superficial similarity of the Lexus engine's looks compared with those of the S85 - y'know the shape of the inlet plenum box and all...

That was my first impression as well. I guess Lexus have spent tons of time driving the M6.

Lexus LF-A Supercar Gets Track Time in Japan

OYAMA, Japan — Japan's race fans had a rare chance to see the Lexus LF-A in action this weekend, when the super secretive V10 sport coupe was demonstrated at Toyota's Motorsports Festival at Fuji Speedway.

This was the black "development" LF-A mule that ran in this summer's Nürburgring 24 Hours. Driving the car was Akio Toyoda, executive vice president of Toyota and one of the prime movers behind the LF-A program. In front of a crowd of 30,000, Akio did two laps in the LF-A, which made a great sound and was not short on pace.

Almost two years after the concept version's unveiling in Detroit, Toyota is still not saying when or if the LF-A will make it to production. Sources believe, however, that the production LF-A is now signed off, and this long awaited 480-horsepower, 200-mph supercoupe will appear at some strategic point in 2009, with a limited run of sales to start later, perhaps in 2010 or 2011.

The recent buzz in Tokyo has been that Toyota is thinking of a 500-unit run with an asking price that would be the equivalent of about $261,000-$313,000. Given the current economic climate, those numbers, and indeed the LF-A's whole future, could yet be revised.

All along, the LF-A has been pushed by Akio Toyoda, scion of the Toyoda family that founded the Toyota Motor Corporation, arch motorsport fan and the man widely tipped to be the next Toyota president and CEO. Without his support, the LF-A, which has always existed outside Toyota's normal production processes, would almost certainly have been canned.

Inside Line says: The LF-A could yet live to do battle with Nissan's GT-R and Acura's new NSX. — Peter Nunn, Correspondent

Spy shots: Lexus LF-A edges closer to production

The supercar that almost wasn’t, and still might not be, the Lexus LF-A, recently underwent a special kind of exhibition in Milan during Fashion Week, and now it has been spotted once again in prototype form ahead of a rumored debut at October's Tokyo Motor Show.

The LF-A has been spotted testing on a number of occasions, so it's well past the 'pure concept' stage, but its production future still remains murky at best. The Japanese company's investment in the LF-A at the recent Milan Fashion Week, however, lends credence to the idea that it is in fact going to be built, and this latest prototype features some new elements have never been seen before.

First and foremost are the new tail-lamps, which are likely to be the actual production units. Also new is the smoother body and integrated diffusers at the front and rear of the car.

If the LF-A does go into production, it is expected to cost more than $200,000 and sport a 5.0L V10 engine rated at over 500hp (373kW). Limited production is also the name of the game, with only about 1,000 units expected unless demand proves high enough to support more. A hybrid variant should also be available, but it’s unknown how much power this version will have or what affect the heavy batteries and extra motor will have on handling and weight.

The car's front mid-engine placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators, should allow for excellent weight distribution, however. Lexus has billed the concept version of the car as having a top speed in excess of 200mph, and we have no reason to doubt the production version will reach these limits if sold unrestricted.

Yummy yummy. That car looks 100% production ready and I'm hoping that it will be unveiled at Frankfurt. I'm sure Toyota don't want the car to be outdated before it hits the show room. Some sick cars are on the way the f430 successor, new 911, LP650 successor and others. This year is the last chance for this car to make a splash. I have high hopes for the design and everything.

New info reveals Lexus LF-A to get 550hp, 218mph top speed

The supercar that almost wasn’t, and still might not be, the Lexus LF-A, was recently spotted once again in prototype form ahead of a rumored debut at October's Tokyo Motor Show, and today information about the car's powertrain has emerged, confirming much of what was already suspected of the car.

The LF-A has been spotted testing on a number of occasions, so it's well past the 'pure concept' stage, but its production future still remains murky at best. The Japanese company's investment in the LF-A at the Milan Fashion Week, however, lends credence to the idea that it is in fact going to be built, and the continuous stream of prototypes tracking the Ring go a step further. Today news of a tie-up with Lotus for the next Esprit takes the production of a V10 engine into the realm of reality, and on its coattails comes a report from AutoExpress.

The LF-A's powertrain has previously been speculated as a 5.0L V10 engine rated at over 500hp (373kW), and the latest report says it will be over 550hp (410kW) and capable of a top speed of 218mph. Limited production is also the name of the game, with only about 1,000 units expected unless demand proves high enough to support more, though it will cost more than $200,000. A hybrid variant should also be available, but it’s unknown how much power this version will have or what affect the heavy batteries and extra motor will have on handling and weight - or if the hybrid system will be anything more than badging and lip-service to the concept.

The car's front mid-engine placement, along with a rear-mounted transaxle and rear-mounted radiators, should allow for excellent weight distribution, however. Lexus has previously billed the concept version of the car as having a top speed in excess of 200mph, and we have no reason to doubt the production version will reach its sales targets if sold unrestricted - whatever the state of the global economy.

I can't wait to see this car.......but 200K price....its going to be a tough sell for a Lexus. It will need to outperform the GT-R because unlike Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette etc. Lexus has ZERO heritage to lure buyers of such expensive cars. Still though I give Toyota credit because this is a non-money maker and they're still doing it anyway, which must be a very difficult decision for them.

I should have known that...lol. What else. It appears Mercedes V8 will make more power than their V10 and that is before the turbo version arrives.

^ Who says there's going to be a turbo version? That rumour on the M156 engine going forced induction never materialised. So why should this be any different?

I believe that this is the swansong for 6.208 cc NA engine. The M159 is the culmination of an amazing effort from AMG's engineers, but it is one that is no longer sustainable in these times. I believe the next AMG engine will be a smaller, more compact FI V8 in the region of 4.5 to 5.0 litres in capacity. Ok, so that's a little OT but my two cents.

Rumor Mill INC. A turbo version should come in 2-3 years, a 6.0L version of the 6.2 is the last I heard/read. It should have DI and other tricks by then.

The internet is full of juvenile MB fans who are disappointed with the "mere" 570 HP SLS makes, so they cook up fantazies about 700HP turbo versions and ignores everything else so good about this car - except of course where the door knob goes.
