J.D. Power has announced its 2019 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and BMW ranks 7th this year, up from its 8th spot last year. To come up with this ranking, J.D. Power polled nearly 33,000 owners of 2016 model-year vehicles about their three-year ownership experience.

J.D. Power also breaks it down by individual vehicle segments. Overall, the Porsche 911 is the highest-ranked model in the entire study. For BMW, the 2016 5 Series and X3 were the top models in their segments -- the Midsize Premium Car and Compact Premium SUV, respectively. The 2016 X1 was runner up in the Small Premium SUV category.

My 340i was a troublesome car which I loved dearly. My X3 M40i has been fault free 8 months in, yet it has failed to warm my cockles.

But it's nice not having to worry about visiting the dealership.

Nice to see the Germans above industry average.

Appreciate hearing about your experience with your BMWs, first hand experience is always important , although the 911 ranked the highest doesn't mean that none of its owners experienced any problems its just the average from the 33000 owners polled.

Agree about the Germans especially MB making it above the industry average this year, there's still room for improvement for all.

Mercedes was above the industry average long time ago and more consistently than any of the Germans except Porsche.

I'd be curious to see the raw data for some of these rankings. If this is just a mean average it reads as if every single car has a problem (106 problems for 100 cars), it would make more sense to know how many cars had zero faults and what the modal average was.

Damn, Chevy going to promote the shit out of these paid wins with "real people" commercials.

That new for 2017 MY E-Class must have brought them down. When all these new GLE, GLS and A-Class sedans hit, they will sink again.

All those first MY E300s with suspect interior build quality and zero options... aka lease specials, are flooding the second markets now as lease returns. They look low rent now.

BMW doing well ...Lexus beaten by Genesis is quite something. Porsche always features in the top 5.

I'm surprised how high Lexus is ranked. Sure, the cars are reliable, but they are very outdated and not user friendly. I think only now that Lexus finally caught up with the others and started offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but their infotainment system is still the worst in the business.

...but they aren’t checking for latest tech ...the fact that they are so outdated is in part why they are reliable.

I thought it measured more than just reliability. Anyway, terrible result for Mercedes and I hate to sound like a downer, but I don't think they will improve any time soon.

I’m sure someone else can chime in,but I think it’s about which cars have less or more issues in the last 3 years ......as for Mercedes I can’t disagree with you will have to see what direction they take with the new S class.
